IP Address Failed on Xbox 360 Live Test

And the reason for this part to fail differs along with the difference of the type of connection you are using to connect your Xbox 360 console as follows:

a. Direct connection to modem:

1. Make sure first no other devices connected to the modem at the same time as some modems has an Ethernet port along with a USB port so, you might think you can use both at the same time & connect the PC through USB with the console through Ethernet & that's incorrect so, we need to disconnect the PC first.
2. Turn the modem off then turn it back on after couple of seconds (by turning the modem off I mean to unplug it from the wall outlet even if you have a power button for it), then go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then "Restore to Factory Defaults" and when it ask you to Apply Settings select "Test Xbox Live".

3. If it's still not working we need to get the Physical Address of your PC to put it on the dashboard of your Xbox 360 console as some cable companies are preventing any unknown MAC Addresses from connecting, to get the Physical Address of you PC connect the PC only to the modem then follow these steps here, the physical address will look like this 00-E0-98-C1-88-C2.

4. Go on the dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then “Edit Settings” then “Additional Settings” tab then select “Advanced settings” & put the Physical Address of your PC without the dashes on the “Alternate MAC Address” part and select "Done", when it asks you to Apply Settings choose “Test Xbox Live”.

b. Wired connection to router:

1. Go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then “Restore To Factory Defaults", when it ask you to apply settings select "Test Xbox Live".
2. Turn the router off then turn it back on after couple of seconds, then go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then "Test Xbox Live Connection".

c. Wireless connection to router:

1. Go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then “Restore To Factory Defaults", when it ask you to apply settings select "Test Xbox Live"

2. Go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to the "system" area then "Network Settings" then "Edit Settings" then select your wireless settings part down there "Wireless Mode, Network Name,..." the console will automatically then search for your wireless network and when it find it and you select it, it will ask you to enter your wireless key which is called WEP or WPA key - you can find it written on your wireless router or then you need to contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider) to get it from them - when it ask you to apply settings select "Test Xbox Live". 3. Just a kind of higher security that some router may use than the WEP & WPA key, you have also to accept the Xbox 360 connection to your wireless network on the router settings, you have to access to your router settings as mentioned before to check on the wireless security part whether your router apply a MAC filtering option, which is an option that blocks any unknown MAC address (the ID of any device) from accessing to your wireless network, and if it applies that kind of security you’ll find your Xbox 360 MAC address on the list there so, allow the Xbox 360 to get connected to the network, or even you can just turn off the MAC access control option instead of that, then go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then "Test Xbox Live Connection".

4. If it's still not working, you can put the Xbox 360 console - as a trial - in a closer position to the router to see wither it's going to pick up an IP address or not.

5. If even after you turn off the MAC filtering option on your router settings your Xbox 360 can't still get connected to Xbox Live you need then to update your router firmware (The router software) and if you don't know how to do so then call your ISP (Internet Service Provider) to assist you with that, then go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then "Test Xbox Live Connection".

d. ICS (Internet Connection Sharing):

1. Go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then “Restore to Factory Default" when it asks you to Apply Settings choose “Test Xbox Live”.

2. Allow the ICS option on the PC as mentioned before, then test Xbox Live.

3. If it's still not working, set the IP Settings manually to be:

IP Address: 192.168.0.2

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Gateway: 192.168.0.1

Then go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then "Test Xbox Live Connection".

4. If it's still not working, you can get the IP address of your connection from the PC as mentioned before then set your IP manually on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console using this IP address, when it asks you to Apply Settings choose “Test Xbox Live”.

If you faced any other kind of troubles with this part failing even after you tried these steps please don't hesitate to leave a comment.

Just spent the better part of 2 hours trying to connect via wireless... over and over I kept manually resetting the details to no avail.

BIG hint, do as is said on this site and reset to factory settings. Then start over.

This was the only thing that worked. Top marks guys!

If only there was a digg button I could see.

Unknown said...

First of all thank you for your words, I really hope it helps..
The digg icon is right above your comment, you'll find some links one of them is "Digg This!" I will really appreciate it if you digg it, and again thaks for your comment.

im still having trouble please help!!!!! im trying to connect my 360 via my wireless pc using ICS. iv tried manually typing in the ip address etc etc but still having no joy! it says there are a clash of ip adresses on the system! im very confused any help would greatly be appreciated!! thanks already

Hello there,
Don't worry it's so simple, all you need to do is to turn off the Xbox 360 then turn off the PC and the router too. After this turn the router on then the PC then the Xbox 360. Please do it the same sequence. I believe it's gonna work. If not try this when you restart the PC go to "Local area connection" then "Properties" then "General" then "Internet Protocol" and choose "Obtain IP & DNS automatically".

Anonymous said...

thanks for the help so far but im still having no luck!! this just about sums up my expierences with PC's!! could it be that im only using a normal ethernet cable and not a crossover or have you anything else to try?? thanks in advance

Unknown said...

It's not related to the ethernet cable you are using so let’s try everything from the very beginning.
I’ll need you to go on your computer to Start then Control Panel then Network Connections.
You’ll find two main categories:
1-Dial up
2-LAN or High–speed Internet
Under Dial up you’ll find your Broadband Connection. Right click on it and select Properties then click on the Advanced tab. You’ll find an Internet Connection Sharing option. I need you to unmark the box beside “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection” then click “OK”. Then disconnect and reconnect again to the internet. We are doing so because you might be allowing ICS to the wrong Local Area Network. Then we’ll allow ICS again.

On the Xbox 360 dashboard go to System then Network Settings then Restore to factory defaults. Then Apply Settings and Test Xbox Live Connection.

On the PC:
1-Go on PC to Start
2-Then Control Panel
3-Go to Network Connections
4-You’ll find 2 main categories “Dial up” & “LAN or High–speed Internet”.
5-If you have more than one "Local Area Network" you must first know which of them is the connection to your Xbox 360 console, so unplug the cable that connects the PC to the console from the back of the PC and look which of them on the screen will turn to be unplugged (You’ll find a red X when you disconnect the Ethernet cable and it will disappear when you reconnect it again), so that's the connection to the console, then reconnect the cable.
6-Under “Dial up” you’ll find your broadband connection, so right click on it & go to Properties.
7-Then click on the Advanced tab, you’ll find there the Internet Connection Sharing option, all what you need to do is to tick the check box “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection”, then if you have more than one "Local Area Network" you'll get a list of them here to select the one that you want to share your broadband connection with, for sure select the Xbox 360 connection. (The one you found the Red X on when you disconnected the Ethernet cable)
8-And tick “Establish a dial-up connection whenever a computer on my network attempts to access the Internet”
9-Then click OK.
10-To apply these settings you’ll need to disconnect from the internet and reconnect again.
When you reconnect again the Dial-up connection should say Connected, Shared.
Now on the Xbox 360 dashboard go to System then Network Settings the Test Xbox Live Connection.
Hopefully it’ll work this time and let me now what will happen.

Anonymous said...

my broadband is not under the dial-up connection so i can't do this i think thats the problem!

Unknown said...

Yes, I believe this is the problem. You'll need to contact the Windows support and ask them to allow the internet connection sharing for the Xbox 360.

Anonymous said...

i followed though the instructions but then the dns failed can your help mw with this?

Hi there,

Can you please first tell me who is your internet service provider?
What's the type of your connection wired or wireless?
Are you connecting the xbox 360 to a modem or a router or a computer?
What steps did you try and didn't work?
I need to know these information to better assist you.

Thanks,

hiya i sign into ma xbox live account but i cant connect 2 xbox live tho says some profile could not sign in help me plz

Unknown said...

Hi there,

Can you please try to delete your profile and recover it again?

Follow these steps and they'd help:

1- First go to System
2- Then Memory
3- Then Hard drive or memry unit (where ever your profile is saved)
4- Choose Profiles
5- Then choose the profile that you can't sign in with.
6- Select delete profile only (Don't choose delete profile and other items because this way you'll lose your scores)

If that didn't work, test Xbox Live connection and and see what exactly fails then go to that page on the blog.

I hope that helps,

I Use ICS because i have a USB modem, i have had xbox live before but recently my COMPUTER went in for repair, when i got it back, my xbox live didnt work, all my settings were on automatic when it worked and when xbox live did connect it said 'Local Area Connection 2 is now connected...'. Now, when i turn my xbox on it says 'Local Area Connection 2 limited or no connectivity', i have also tried typing manually my setting into the dashboard only to find that out that my IP address changes everytime i connect to the internet. My IP now constantly fails. I have been on command prompt and ipconfig/all'd it and sawmy IP etc settings but ive noticed that on my broadband it says....DHCP enabled....No. Please help me get my xbox live back. I have also phonedxbox live support and they couldn't fix and they said theyd have a technician ring me in 2 to 3 days-The technician did ring me but at the time i was out and therefor nowhere near my computer or 360.this was 3 months ago. No reply.

Anyone please help!!!

PS) My broadband is TalkTalk incase you needed to know.

Hi, i am having a nightmare of a time connecting my 360 to live. I have tried automatic detection of my settings, which does not work (and oddly enough produces an ip address that isn't mine). I have tried manually entering my settings which i obtained through ipconfig (to no avail). On several occasions the test did accept my ip address but invariably failed on the dns. I have a direct connection to the modem so it is my understanding that connection should be fairly cut and dry. Any help you could render wold be much appreciated.

Unknown said...

Hi Ryan,

Three months!! have you been in a vacation or what dude :)

Anyway, let's start.

1. I need you first to disable the ICS option on your PC, use this link but instead of checking the box remove that check mark:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/ics-internet-connection-xbox-live.html

2. Then turn off the whole thing (PC, Modem, Xbox 360) by turning off the modem I need you to unplug it from the wall socket even if you have a power button, wait for a couple of minutes afterwards turn the PC on first then the modem first and go again on the same steps on the last link to check the box once more to allow the ICS, then turn on your Xbox 360.

Hopefully this will work if not, I'll tell you what to do, go on the same steps on the past link till step No. 6.

Instead of going to the "Advanced tap" keep on the general one and you'll find there a subtitle "this connection uses the following items" under this subtitle there are some options one of them is "Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)" double click on this one.

another new page will pop up including a "General" and "Alternate Configuration" set all the options here to automatic.

On General "Obtain an IP address automatically" , "Obtain DNS server address automatically" , On Alternate Configuration "Automatic private IP address".

It's even better to set all your connections this way, I mean even the "Local Area Connection 1" or the Broadband connection so all would be on the same configuration with no hassle at all.

Then Restart your PC and check, if it's still not working repeat the steps "1,2" on this comment please and feed me back.

Hopefully that will work then.
Cheers.

Basically I want to thank you for your great feedback, I do appreciate it soooooo much, feeling awesome reading it.

Thanks and see you.

Hi there,

First of all sorry for the delayed respond but I was looking for a reason for an issue like yours, but basically I can't find a clear reason for it to occur as you said you connects using a direct connection through a modem.

So, I need you please to try the steps on the top of this page (I've done some changes on it), I believe it will help.

Also please feed me back coz I might have some other things to try by then if it still not working.

Cheers.

Hi, My problem is a little complicated. I have no problem connect to xbox live in any way at all, and i can view everything from the xbox live home pages and menus, but after i put in a game and try to locate online games (in games such as halo 3, rainbow six vegas, halo 2, GRAW 2, and so on), my xbox will search for the games for a very extended period of time, and then it will come up with no results, and shortly afterwards i will be disconnected from xbox live. I then run a test to see what is wrong with my connection, but the only problem seen is that my xbox live connection failed... but everything else was working properly. I checked many other sites, but all they said is that if you xbox live connection failed, then your ip, mtu, dns, or icmp must have failed and that i should check them, but i know they are fine and i have checked them, but they are all working properly. Any suggestions, or is xbox live just prejudice, lol :P. For the record, i have a high speed broadband connection, behind a d-link router.

Hi there,

As you said there is no problem with your IP, Dns or MTU at all, it's a problem with the coming part, the NAT, most of the times it's something related to your router settings just need to be reset properly to enable you to connect to Xbox Live.

This is how to access to your router settings through your PC:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/04/how-access-router-settings-on-pc.html

1. After you get access to it you need to lower the router firewall down (you always have the options High, Medium, Low and Off) just set it to Low.

2. Go on the step on this page also please:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/xbox-live-nat-failed-on-xbox-360-live.html

Please feed me back whatever the results.
Cheers.

Hi Ocie,

I want you please to try the steps on the top of this page I believe it will be really helpful.

Try th steps under "Direct Connection To Modem"

Please also feed me back after that to see if we have anything else need to try.

Cheers.

Hi, This is the same person who you told about NAT before

Well, at this point, opened up all the ports in my router, and checked my connection once again, this time before trying to join a game, and it said my NAT was open.

So i assumed i had fixed the problem, but still while attempting to join a game it waited and waited, and finally i was disconnected from xbox live. When i ran the test, it said i could connect to xbox live and my NAT was till open.

I think maybe the problem is my ISP, but i wonder if maybe something else is causing it.

Unknown said...

Hi there,

Have you lowered the firewall settings on your router or not??

Please check this and tell me.
Cheers.

This is the solution for people getting that crappy error where you cannot turn on ICS because of an IP conflict, cannot remember the exact error as I was up all last night trying to figure this out.

The error occurs because ICS is trying to use 192.168.0.1 and that is already part of the range assigned to your wireless connection by your router.

The fix.

1) go into your router config program- by typing its address into your browser (usually but not exclusively 192.168.0.1)

2)Change the LAN IP to another range eg 192.168.1.1

3) Ensure the subnet is set to 255.255.255.0 (it should be set to this already.)

4)Change the range of IP addresses that your router can give out via DHCP to 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.254

5)Save your settings and log out of your router.

6)Make sure that your 'Wireless Connection' and your 'Wired NIC' are set to acquire their IP addresses automatically (DHCP). This option is found by clicking on the TCP/IP properties of the two connections mentioned above.

7)Go to your 360 and ensure that the network settings are set to acquire automatically.

8)Go to 'Start' 'Programs' 'Communications' 'Network Setup Wizard'

9)Choose the top option, click next. Read through the following screens and make sure that you tick the wired NIC that you want to share with. Make sure you put this connection in the same workgroup as your PC is in. (You can find out the workgroup if you dont already know it, by right cliking on "My Computer" "Properties" "Computer Name tab" - its in there somewhere. :)

Finish the wizard.

10)View your network connections. You should now have a hand underneath your wireless connection. This means it is shared.

11)Run the tests on the xbox and it should complete and you are ready to go. If not, go to next step.

12) Go back to your network connections screen, right click on your wireless connection, go to the properties and then the advanced tab. Make sure ICS is ticked. You will notice a settings button. Click it. Tick the first three boxes, which should be two DHCP and a DNSes. Press OK, or Save or whatever... im doing this from memory.

13)Hopefully 13 is lucky for you, and if you have followed the steps it should be. Run the tests on the xbox again and thank god that you didnt have to work this out yourself.

Peace out.

This is the error which my previous post fixes: "Internet connection sharing cannot be enabled. A LAN connection is already configured with the IP address required for automatic IP addressing."

Ok, so here is my situation. I am trying to get live and I have for an internet provider Verizon. I use a small usb card that is in my tower of the computer and that allows me to get high speed broadband internet(not dsl, its totally wireless). I do not have ay router or any box thing that other people have that connects through cables because I cant get that kind of internet provider, I live on a farm 600 feet away from the street. Any ways I connect every thing up and I put the xbox 360 connected with the ethernet cable to the back of my tower and when I run the tests for xbox live it says it found the network but not the Ip address. Then while I am running it on my computer it says a bunch of stuff about the local area connection is not working or some thing. I talked to some guys at best buy and one of them said to get a cross over cable instead of the ethernet cable. Is that the way to go? I am some what confused on what to do in my position because no one I know has ever been in this kind of position. Please help me!

Unknown said...

Hi there,

I know the type of connection you are talking about usually it's called "Mobile Connect Card".

Anyway, in a case like yours it's a normal ICS connection and if you've checked the last comment added by our friend "DHCP Genius" i believe you'd find your answer I've even posted a comment for this issue on the 27th of Sep. on this page but I'm going to say it again for you.

First of all, a cross over cable is a type of Ethernet cables and all totally the same in your issue, no advantage for cross over cables.

There is a small IP conflict on your PC that needs to be resolved, first I need you to go to this link and follow the steps till step No.6

It's even better and in your case I think it's a must to set all your connections this way, I mean even the "Local Area Connection 1" or the Broadband connection so all would be on the same configuration with no hassle at all.

Then Restart your PC and check, Hopefully this will work, please feed me back after all.

Cheers.

Hi, I just stumbled across this place and am having much the same problems as everyone else. Firstly my details:
Internet provider: NTL/Virgin Media
Modem: Unbranded
Wireless Router: Phillips SND6500
PC: Macbook pro

I am trying to connect to live using an ethernet cable as I cannot afford the xbox network adapter thingy. I plug the ethernet cable into one of the LAN ports on my wireless router but when I do test connection it cannot find an IP address. Because I am using an Apple Mac I cannot follow the aforementioned instructions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

hey, im trying to connect to xbox live via shared internet via airport extreme (OS X 10.4.10). i followed all the steps and all the test pass until it gets to MTU. i have manually changed the MTU (from my Mac via "terminal") to higher than 1364...iv tried alot of different MTUs (1492,1500,1400,1364,1365). I dont have a basestation. i live in an apartment complex and there is no visible router. i was using a wireless adapter that was working until it just started failing the MTU test a couple of days ago; if that helps at all. I am at your mercy.

hey this is ronnie and i tried everything your saying but when i connect the crossover ethernet cord up to the xbox my ip always fails when i test it. im getting frusterated and cant figure out what to do to get on live. help ive tried everything

Unknown said...

Hi Justin,

You have tried the above instructions exactly and it still won't work, i will say that the DHCP is turned off but you say it's enabled!!

You sure when you test your connection it fails on the IP Address part??

So, in a case like this you might need to open the Xbox live ports found also on this page on the ICS part, also lower your router firewall settings, then restart the steps on this page once more.

Please feed me back with the results.
Cheers.

Unknown said...

Hi Solipsist,

As you are connecting using a wired connection to your router, just try the 2 steps listed here about this type of connection.

If it's not working still, make sure also that the DHCP is Enabled, I'm sorry I don't know how to check this through an Apple Mac.

then try the 2 steps on this page once more.

Cheers.

Unknown said...

Hi Trey,

You said you live in an apartment complex, i can understand this, but in a case like this you can't restart the router!!

I need you to set the MTU to 1364 then to restart the router, some routers will not apply the new settings unless you restart even if it said on the screen saved and applied.

Try this anyway please and feed me back.

See you.

Unknown said...

Hey Ronnie,

I'm sorry for my delayed respond as I'm sorry to all my friends, It was really a 2 off days!

Anyways, I didn't know still what type of connection you are on I just got it's a wired connection.

please till me is to a router or modem and try also first the steps on this type of connection on this page first so we'll continue from there.

See you.

Hey Xbox Support.. You don't have a name so i'll just call you Trevor.

Ok lets keep it short and sweet shall we? The Ip address...

I rebooted my pc today and now xbox live fails at the ip address stage on the test. It did this when i first got it but when i enabled ICS it remedied this. It no longer rememdies this however.

I have called 2 support lines and no luck.

My Connection is wired and the ethernet cable runs from the xbox to the back of my Computer not a modem purely into the back of my PC. my Ip adress changes. (As noticed when run CMD after connecting) so my IP is not static. MY LAN connection now says @Limited or no connectivity even if it's plugged in. My little speedtouch connection on network connections says "Connected, shared, firewalled" Is it due to a firewall? I honestly don't know what to do, and i bought a new live subscription account 3 days ago so it would be a waste not to get it fixed. I've tried all sorts including your guide. Please help mye Trevor and i'll forever be in your debt (Wookie life debt style) Pete! <3

Unknown said...

Hi Pete,
Thank you for the name lol!

Basically from what you said your issue is that you are facing a limited or no connectivity on your Local Area Connection instead of being connected.

This is due to an IP conflict between the connections on your PC, we just need to set it all to automatic and enjoy the beauty of the modern tech.
Go to this new page and try the steps then please feed me back.

So after disconnecting the PC and connecting your Xbox 360 only to the modem, restart the modem then go on the dashboard to "System" area then "Network Settings" then "Restore to factory defaults" and when you get the "Apply Settings" window just choose"Test Xbox Live".

Hopefully this step would help, and plz feed me back whatever the case.
Don't worry this time I'm not gonna be that late.

I can't get my Xbox 360 to connect to live at all.

Ive gone through this ntire site and nothing works....its messed my head up that much over night that i can't even explain things at all.

I just wanna know 1 thing for now before i go to bed.

Right - my mum has her computer all set up etc. i go and buy a computer and tell her i need wireless so i can run mine. So her computer is liike the master computer or what ever you want to call it. Does this make any difference? I can't get my head round it....ive had the xbox for about a year now and never bothered with live - but i just thought id give it a go because thats what its all about right?

Ceers.

Hi Ry,

First of all you must know that I want to help you with this, but you didn't give me enough information to walk through and get to a solution.

Let me ask you some Questions first & please answer me, hopefully we would be able to sort this thing out;

How do you connect your console to Live? mean is it connected through wired or wireless connection and whatever your answer, what do you connect your console to is it a modem or router or PC?

Also when you go on the dashboard of your console to "System" then "Network Settings" then "Restore to factory defaults" and choose "Test Xbox Live" when it ask you to choose, what is the part failing on the test??
just try it once more and tell me.

Cheers.

Hi Dan,

Sorry to hear that you’re still not able to connect to Xbox Live.
It seems that your cable company is preventing any unknown MAC Addresses from connecting.
So let’s try something else.

And here is how to do it:
• Make sure the Computer is connected to the modem and go to “Start”
• Then click “Run”
• Then type “cmd”
• Then Type "ipconfig /all" (take care there is a space between the g and the /)
• Then copy the "Physical Address" from your local area connection, it will look like this 00-E0-98-C1-88-C2
• Now on the Xbox go to “System”
• Then “Network Settings”
• Then “Edit Settings”
• Then go to "Additional Settings" tab
• Then “Advanced Settings”
• And select "Alternate MAC Address"
• Now enter the "Physical Address" you got from your computer but without the dashes
• Select “Done”
• Now connect your Xbox to the modem
• And test Xbox Live connection

I believe now it will work fine.
And feed me back with the results.
Good Luck,

hey it seems like i have tried everything to get on my xbox live i hooked up my ethernet cable from my xbox 360 to my labtop which is hooked to someones internet around my house and this worked on my friends labtop before but i got me a labtop an hp and it says that its an unidentified network please help all i want to do is play halo 3 online

Unknown said...

Hi there,

This is for the comment left on October 20, you know when it say "Your console was unable to to negotiate a lease...." I believe you are using a router then because the DHCP is likely to be a router.

If it's a router as I said then you need to set the IP settings on your console to to automatic first.
Then on the router settings you need to lower the firewall settings down and open the Xbox Live ports which is UDP88, UDP3074 and TCP 3074.

You can call your router support in order to tell you how to do so, also you can check this page it might give some help with the router;
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/04/how-access-router-settings-on-pc.html

Feed me back with the result.
Cheers.

Hi there,

This is for the comment left on October 23.
Well, from what you've said you don't have full control on your broadband connection so there are some things we can't try.

But I need you first of all to try the steps on these pages:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/ics-internet-connection-xbox-live.html
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/10/ip-failes-xbox-360-live-test.html

If you are still getting the same result you'll need to contact that "Someone" to try troubleshooting on his router as then he might have changed some settings on it which doesn't allow you to connect.

Please feed me back if you still facing any failure.
Cheers.

Hi, this is fahad and i cant connect to xbox live. When ever i go to advenced under my wireless network properties the check box/circle settings that allow other users to connect throught this computer isnt their anymore it just disappeared so all their is, is the firewall settings i need some help cuz it was working perfectly b4(xbox live) i am connecting the Ethernet wire from my xbox 360 to my pc and i have a wireless network adapter on my pc and the router is dowstairs.

Unknown said...

Hi Fahad,

Basically, in a case like yours I would say that you are using an "OEM" windows version which doesn't have the ICS option.

But from your words I can see that it was here but somehow now it's not, and for sure this has nothing to do with your Xbox 360 it's all related to Windows XP version you are using, have you setup a new Windows during the past days??

If not and as this is a Windows option that has disappeared, maybe it's due to some firewall settings so try first to turn off any firewall but unlikely that would work, actually I think your Windows is corrupted or got a virus somehow and that now you need to reset your Windows once more.

Please feed me back with the actions you've taken and what was the resolution for your issue then.
Cheers.

I am at my wits end as well my friend. You seem to be the only source worth a damn since Xbox Support is worthless.

I am connected through ICS, Wired into my computer, My 360 fails at the IP test and gives me a "PPPoE were not validated". I know my PPPoE information is correct.

If I remove my PPPoE info, I can get to the DNS step but it fails there as well. I think theres an issue with the shared connection since the Ethernet connection for the shared says "limited or no connectivity" while I can still browse the internet with the "host" pc.

I've tried going in and around all over trying to fix this. Is my only option going to be moving my entire router/dsl modem set up to my room?

Hey, whenever i try to allow others to use my internet in wirless settings on my laptop it comes up with "An error occurred while internet connection sharing was being enabled, Internet Connection Sharing cannot be enabled|| A lan connection is already configured with the IP address that is required for automatic IP adressing

and when ever i go into test xbox live conection IP address fails but network adapter says wired. Please help me Daniel.

Hi Jocker,

OK, Let’s do everything again from the scratch.
On your computer go to Start then Control Panel then Network Connections.

Ensure your chosen Local Area Connection is Enabled if it is Disabled, right click on the Local Area Connection and choose Enable.
9- Also tick “Allow other network users to control or disable the shared Internet connection”
10-Then click OK.
11-To apply these settings you’ll need to disconnect from the internet and reconnect again.
When you reconnect again the Dial-up connection should say Connected, Shared.
12-Now select the network connection linked to your Xbox 360, right click on it and select properties.
13- Scroll down the list to the bottom and double click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to bring up its properties.
14- Click ok if you find “Use the following IP address” selected.
IP: 192.168.0.1
15- Now make sure the Ethernet cable is connected from the Xbox 360 to the PC. And turn on the Xbox360.
16- On the Xbox 360 dashboard go to System then Network settings. Click on the IP settings and switch it to manual and enter the following:

IP: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1

It will ask you to apply settings and test Xbox Live connection.
When you test the connection it’ll pass. But if the DNS fails go back to the DNS settings, switch it to manual and enter this DNS: 192.168.0.1

NOTE: You need to ensure that there is no PPPOE settings set. Go on the System then Network settings then Edit settings then additional settings then click on the PPPOE and select clear settings.

I believe your Xbox 360 will be connected to Xbox Live.
And if you have any more questions don't hesitate to leave another comment.

Bye now,

I own a Motorola SB501 Cable Modem, and a Linksys EZXS55W 5 port 10/100 switch.

I have my computer connected to the switch, and I can obtain the internet. Now, if I connect my Xbox 360 to the Cable Modem directly, I can access the internet and save the settings. From there, I can rehook it up to the switch, and I can still log on to the internet from both the PC and the 360, which are both connected to the switch.

After that, one day, I randomly plugged my PS2 into the same switch and it could access online play (which it usually didn't). That worked for about a week, until my cable internet connection randomly dropped. I figured "no big deal, I'll just power cycle both of them and I'll be back to normal."....I was wrong.

Now, I can only access the internet with this PC. Can someone help me get back to where I was (being able to access the internet through all 3 with the switch)?

My internet doesn't require a user/pass... Please Help!?

-ZAN

Hi Daniel,

First I want you please to check this page here:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/10/ip-failes-xbox-360-live-test.html
I believe that will resolve your issue as you set all to automatic leaving it to the brilliance of technology to sort it out for you.

Please tell me what you got after following these steps.
Cheers.

Unknown said...

Hi Zan,

Basically, there is no problem with your connection as you described, the only thing that might be a reason for this to occur is that there is a connection problem wtith the actual switch.

I think it would be better to buy a router instead of using a modem and a switch, but to try resolving your issue now I think you need to power cycle it all again and by that I mean:

1. Turn off your PC, Xbox 360, PS2, modem and switch (for modem and switch unplug them from the wall outlet)
2. Disconnect the 3 devices from the switch.
3. Turn on the modem and the switch then reconnect the 3 devices one by another with this sequence:
a. Xbox 360 and check it's connection first.
b. PS2 and check the connection too.
c. PC and check it too.

If it didn't work just try the same steps again.

If I were in your shoes, I'll buy a router and get off all that hassle.

Cheers.

Hi, my computer cant find an ip address for my xbox live, i did everything that your website said to do but still no luck. i use a wireless connection and am very frustrated with it, can you help me?

Unknown said...

Hi Cody,

Well first of all I want you to set the "Network Settings" on your console back to it's defaults and to do so go on the dashboard of your Xbox 360 to the "System" area then "Network Settings" then click on "Restore to Factory Defaults".
When it ask you to "Apply Settings" select "Test Xbox Live".
Then reselect your network as it's said here on step 2 under "Wireless connection to router" but make sure you've got the correct WEP or WPA key from your provider or from the back of your router, and make sure you don't have a MAC filtering option or I mean it's turned off, also call your ISP and ask for a firmware update for your router.

after that if it all didn't work, there is a final step to try, but make sure you do it right, go on your router settings on your PC and change your WEP or WPA key to a new one then repeat the steps 1,2 under "Wireless connection to router" on this page.
Hopefully that will work, and please feed me back with the results.

Cheers.

Hi, I've been trying to set up my XBOX Live for a few days with no luck.

I currently have SBC Yahoo DSL with a D-Link 624 router on my Dell XPS computer with Windows XP.

I can get my XboxLive to work when i connect it directly to my modem, but i cannot get my wireless connection to work. I bought the XBOX Wireless Adapter but still no luck. I know my PPPoE name and pass but that also does not work. I have tried setting up ICS and although i am pretty sure i did that right... still no luck. Any suggestions? Should i manually set my IP Address and Gateway?

Hello, my names Ronnie

ok, so i gotz my xbox 360.. and im trying to connect to the internet from the pc.. so the (working) ethernet cable is in the back of ym pc and then the usb from pc into my modem (which has no ethernet slot)then my modem goes straight into the phone line.

i cannot allow other to use my network or share. because i dont have that option in the advanced part, just the firewall. i have dried manualy putting the ip address into the pc and also the xbox but it was to no avail.

The networks page shows that the xbox is connected, but it still seems to not find an IP.

if you guys can solve this then may the gods shine upon you. kuz im really in a call of duty 4 online mood.

Unknown said...

Hi Ronnie,

I'm really sorry for being late answering your question.

Anyway I'm sorry to tell you that it's not possible with the windows version you're using to share the connection, it's called OEM windows which usually is the one you got with your PC when you bought it at the first place and it doesn't support ICS, so you can call Microsoft Windows support and check whether it's possible to upgrade this version to the full Windows or not.

Please feed me back whether this is possible or not.

Hi there,

If you say that the friends have Xbox 360 and they tried it on your connection and it worked fine then the issue here for sure is related to the "Network Settings" on your Xbox 360.

1. Let's try this, first unplug all cables including the power cable of the router then reconnect them back again after a minute or so and turn on all devices.

2. Then go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 Console to "System" then "Network Settings" then "Restore to factory defaults" and when it ask you to apply settings select "Test Xbox Live".

That should work, please feed me back whatever the result.

Hi there 14 years kid,

Sorry for the delayed respond.

You are trying to share your Internet connection from your laptop to your Xbox 360 console, so you'll connect your laptop to the modem even wireless or through a wired connection then your laptop is connected through an Ethernet cable to your Xbox 360.

You'll need to allow the ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) option on your laptop and here is how to do so:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/ics-internet-connection-xbox-live.html

then please go on the steps on this page too to make sure you'll face no problems at all:

If you tried this and you have any other questions please don't hesitate to contact me back.

Hi there,

Well first I want you to restart your router and by that I mean to unplug it from the wall socket and reconnect it back, wait for a couple of minuets.

Then on the dashboard of your Xbox 360 console go to "System" then "Network Settings" then "Restore to Factory Defaults" and apply settings.

After that go back on "Network Settings" to "Edit Settings" and reset the Wireless Settings down there "wireless mode, network name,..." by putting your wireless key once more.

You can get the key from the back of your router or by accessing the router settings from your PC and here is how to do so:

Hopefully that will help, please feed me back with any updates.

Alright...I'll try to explain what's happening as best I can...

When I plug my xbox 360 into my motorola WP850GP with a ethernet cable, my xbox 360 works online just fine. Only thing is, I don't want a wire running through my house so I went out and got an Xbox 360 wireless adapter.

I unplugged the ethernet cable and plugged in my wireless adapter to the USB port on the back of the xbox. I went into my dashboard and went to system, network settings, edit settings, and I went to wireless mode. It found my connection, signal strength is full.

It asked for a WEP key (is it normal to have 4 different WEP keys for 1 router?) and I entered one which wasn't being used by my computer or my laplop. I have my IP settings and DNS settings set for automatic. It gives me an IP address - 169.254.237.137 and a subnet mask - 255.255.0.0 but the Gateway remains 0.0.0.0 Is that strange?

Also the DNS settings remain 0.0.0.0 Shouldn't those change? I tried it with and without an alternate MAC address (taken from my computer) and it never manages to connect. Any ideas? Any help would be appreciated, I want to get rid of this cord!!!

Unknown said...

Hi Chris,

Well, sorry for the delayed respond, I faced the same problem with my cord which I was looking to get red of lol.

Basically, I think your router model # is WR850GP but anyway I can't assume what would be the problem you're facing with your router settings but you shouldn't get this IP even it should start 192.168.. not 169.254.., let's illuminate all options of failure.

First, use this page and access to your router settings through your PC or laptop:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/04/how-access-router-settings-on-pc.html

After I searched for your router (WR850GP as I think) I find the MAC filtering option named "Restricted Wireless MAC Addresses" you will find it under "Wireless" bottom or under "Wireless" then "Advanced" depending on the version you are using, just go there and allow all MAC address to access or disable this option.

Also under "Wireless" then "Security" you'll find "Current WEP Network Key Index" which as far as I got to know would be your Key in use, which is one of the four keys you got on the router so write it down on a piece of paper.

Now go back on the dashboard of your Xbox 360 to "System" then "Network Settings" then "Restore to Factory Defaults" and when it ask you to apply settings select "Test Xbox Live".

Then back on the "Network Settings" go this time to "Edit settings" and as you've done before select your network but this time use the WEP key you got from your router (the one in use).

Hopefully this will work, if not please check the IP address assigned to your Xbox 360 on the "Edit Settings" page and tell me what is it.
Cheers.

Hi there,

You said all your connections are set to automatic and shared, can we just double check this?
Please check this page here to see what exactly is need to be done to share the connection:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/ics-internet-connection-xbox-live.html

Make sure you only tick the first option “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection”, untick any other option you've already chosen.

Also check this page to make sure all are set to automatic:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/10/ip-failes-xbox-360-live-test.html

Then on the dashboard of your Xbox 360 to "System" then "Network Settings" then "Restore to Factory Defaults" and when it ask to apply settings select "Test Xbox Live".

Hopefully this will work if not, go back on the first link and untick even the first option “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection” then right click on your broadband connection and select "Disconnect" and wait for a couple of minutes then right click again and reconnect after that again repeat the same step and share the connection again by ticking the first option once more then disconnect and reconnect also again then test Xbox Live.

Please make sure you follow the exact steps specially for the last part of unsharing - disconnecting - reconnecting - sharing - disconnecting - reconnecting - testing Xbox Live.

Hi there,

As from what you said you're connecting using ICS (Internet Connection sharing) which requires an extra setup step on your laptop first so please check this page to make sure you've already shared your laptop connection which I reckon you didn't:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/ics-internet-connection-xbox-live.html

If after you shared the connection you got limited or no connectivity on your LAN please use the steps here:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/10/ip-failes-xbox-360-live-test.html

And tell after you tried this what's the results.

Anyway I even wanna know what type of connection you're using now I mean how do you connect your Xbox 360 to the internet? is it through a router?modem?PC?
Please inform me with this piece of information first so we can check what steps to try then.

Hello,
I have been having serious troubles with my xbox 360's LIVE lately. I have my xbox set up so its directly connected to my pc which receives its connection wirelessly, which worked for months. A few weeks ago I was having internet connection issues which were resolved, but i have not been able to get on LIVE since. My IP test continually fails, and I have power cycled my modem, turned both my pc and xbox on and off, used manual and automatic IP info, and restored my console to its factory defaults, none of which have worked. I have a feeling its something obvious and stupid but I have been as thorough as possible in trying to fix my problems and could REALLY use some help.

Hi there,

Basically, there are only one other step to try if you are connecting your Xbox directly to your modem than the steps on this page so please go on the steps again carefully first.

If it's still not working we'll need to set your IP address manually so call your ISP and ask them to provide you with your IP address, Subnet mask and Gatway then go on the dashboard of your Xbox 360 to "System" then "Network Settings" then "Edit Settings" then select the "IP Settings" and set it to manual and put the data you got from your ISP there then click "done".

If that doesn't work please don't hesitate to contact me once more.

Hi roxas13,

Hi

Jon here. I have sorted out the problem of getting onto Xbox Live by simply setting the shared internet connection checkbox, however, I now cannot get media share to work - it worked before all the problems with xbox live cane up - I'm just wondering whether you could help me as I'm really desperate to get both things working again. If it helps - the computer I'm attempting to stream from is a wireless computer, and I'm using a BT Homehub - I've looked at the settings and the wireless computer and the xbox have different IP addresses so theres no confliction there but I just cannot get the xbox to pick up the computer at all please help! From what I have read elsewhere I'm guessing the probelm lies with me sharing the internet connection between the wireless computer and the xbox (which has the wireless adaptor) - so please could you suggest an alternative way in which I could sort this problem out! thanks (in advance) Jon

Hey I've tried everything listed and it still says that the IP address failed.

I use Charter as my provider, I'm plugging my ethernet cable into my computer. My computer is connected to the internet via a wireless router. The main internet connection is in the basement.

I've tried doing the ICS thing, however when I go to my network connections I do not have an option for dial up or broadband. The only option I do have is Lan or High Speed Internet.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have spent the last 3 hours trying to figure this out but it does not work. I am trying to connect via my laptop that uses a Belkin wireless card to connect to our wireless router in the basement.
I hook up laptop and 360 via ethernet, go to network connections, wireless connection, allow others to share etc... then, ERROR MESSAGE:

An error occured while ICS was being enabled

ICS cannot be enabled
A LAN connection is already configured with the IP address that is required for automatic IP addressing

PLEASE HELP!

Hi Nathan,

Sorry for the delayed respond first.

And second, I want to know exactly how aer you trying to connect your Xbox 360 to your wireless router, do you have a wireless network adapter and trying it wireless or are you connecting it through your PC (ICS connection) or is it just connected with an Ethernet cable to your router??

Try also to test your connection and see which part fails first and check the steps to try for this part to fail on our blog and feed me with any updates.

Well I just figured out my problem. I am trying to use my computer for an ICS connection, and while my computer has an ethernet port, it doesn't have an ethernet card installed. D'oh! So I need to go buy me one I guess.

Thanks for all the help.

Hi there,

You say that you're connecting the Xbox360 to your laptop which is connected to a router. And this means that you should set up the internet connection sharing to let the Xbox 360 get connected.

I've put all steps to try related to the ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) issues on 2 pages, please follow the steps on each as it is and read it carefully for your issue to get resolved.

First go on the steps on this page:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/ics-internet-connection-xbox-live.html

Then go on the steps on this link afterwards:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/10/ip-failes-xbox-360-live-test.html

It should work then, but the most important thing is to read each step carefully for your Xbox to go Live, if you faced any other problem please tell me.

Cheers now.

Hi Taylor,

Basically, when you get this error there is something like an IP conflict between the 2 devices (your laptop and Xbox 360) and I'm going to tell you how to resolve it, so here goes;

1. Go on PC to “Start”
2. Then “Control Panel”
3. Go to “Network Connections”
4. You’ll find 2 main categories “Dial up” & “LAN or High–speed Internet”.
5. Under “Dial up” you’ll find your broadband connection, so right click on it & go to properties.
7. Then click on the advanced tab, you’ll find there the ICS options, all what you need to do is to untick all ticked options here.
8. Then right click on the broadband connection and select disconnect, the again right click and reconnect.
9. I want you after that to go on the steps on this page to solve your IP conflict:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/10/ip-failes-xbox-360-live-test.html

10. Go then on he steps on this page to allow ICS properly:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/ics-internet-connection-xbox-live.html

It should work after that, if you still have any other questions please ask.
Cheers.

Hi themurph16,

Well, I was just asked this question from another friend about 2 days before on another page on our blog, he had your same issue and here is exactly what I told him and what I'm telling you to check for me:

Basically, as far as I know there are 2 reasons for not finding the broadband connection or the Dial-up part.

1. If you already got this device connection shared from another device (for example if you have a laptop and shared its connection to a PC you can't share the PC connection to a third device).

2. If you're on a network already had a device sharing its connection as only one device on the same network can share connection with another device (if you have your laptop and PC connected to the same router and you're sharing the laptop connection with your Xbox 360 you can't share the PC connection with any other device).

If you are on one of these situations I think by now you know the reason, if not please tell me so I can look for any other reason that I may not know till now.

Hi themurph16,

OMG so that's the new reason which I didn't know haha, good luck buddy and hopefully you'll get a new one shortly to go live.

I just didn't see your second comment as I was busy on answering some questions here and didn't refresh lol, anyway if anytime you need to ask for something please don't hesitate to ask me, and btw check our giveaway for this month on:

Hi Jon,

Sorry for delaying my respond, but in a case like yours as you said the issue relates to sharing internet connection from your PC to your Xbox 360 and also be the need to stream media at the same time so you may use a different way in order to stream media.

As I can see you've got a BT Homehub which is one of the best and I've seen it working myself, anyway, as an alternative you can just connect your Xbox 360 directly to the Hub instead of connecting it to the PC even through an Ethernet cable or you can buy the Xbox 360 wireless network adapter (you'll find it in our store at amazon.com on the top right side of the page) and that's I think is better.

But I think you might have forgotten something after sorting the Live issue you talked about, have you shared media on your PC through Windows Media Player 11 or not??
Please do so if you didn't and go on your console and try once more to look for PC to check whether you can stream or not and tell me.
Cheeers.

I am stumped.

I am attempting to connect my 360 to my XPS laptop, which is connected to the internet via a Netgear gateway. Everything is connected and installed properly, and my 360 is "wired" to the network adapter. My IP address fails every time. I have read the support blogs and tried everything. I cannot enable ICS, I get the message about the LAN being configured with the IP address. So I used your advice to correct the problem, and went to internet protocal [TCP/IP] to automatically obtain the IP and DNS, however they were already set that way. I have tried manually putting in my IP and PPPoE to no avail. I have tried all the advice I have read and I am stuck. PLEASE HELP I DONT WANT TO CALL GEEK SQUAD!!!!!!!!!

P.S.

Hi, Jon here again,

Thanks for your help so far. I have an official xbox 360 wireless adaptor and I have added the Xbox to Windows Media Player 11 as a sharing device already. I did have it all working at one point but then one night it just decided not to. With the BT Homehub, is there anyway I can get my Xbox to connect to Live without having to share the connection with the wireless PC (the one I'm trying to stream media from) as, like you agreed, I'm sure this is the source of the problem. I reckon if I can get around the connecting to Xbox Live problem without sharing the connection with the PC I want to stream from that would solve the problem.

Thanks again

Jon

I am trying (without avail!!) to connect to xbox live via a direct connection. My ISP is TalkTalk broadband. The adsl ethernet modem I am using is the Netgear DM111P. I usually use my PC with the broadband connection (which connects using a USB modem) but thought that I would be able to disconnect the PC from my broadband and just attach the xbox360 instead to connect but everytime I try it keeps failing on the IP address, I've tried automatic settings and manual but nothing seems to work. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Is it possible that the modem I am trying to use with my xbox360 and ISP is just not compatible?

Hi melodics,

Sorry for the delayed respond I was sick for a couple of days this week.

Anyway, as it's giving you the error about the LAN being configured with the IP, you have to follow the steps on this page on each and every connection you got:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/10/ip-failes-xbox-360-live-test.html

then go on the dashboard of your Xbox360 to "System" then "Network Settings" then "Restore to Factory Defaults".

If it's not working I want you to try these steps here:

Hopefully that would help.
Cheers.

Hi Jon,

You can directly connect your Xbox360 to your Hub by connecting the wireless network adapter then follow these steps:

1. Go on the dashboard to "System"
2. Then "Network Settings"
3. Then "Edit Settings"
4. Down there you'll find your wireless network option, click on it.
5. It will automatically search for your network and when it's connected it might ask you for your wireless key which you can find on the back of your Hub or follow the steps on this page:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/04/how-access-router-settings-on-pc.html

After entering the key your Xbox 360 will be connected to your router wirelessly so you can then share the media from your laptop easier but you'll need to reset all sharing options on the laptop first for it to work.

Cheers.

Hi Taylor,

Sorry for the delayed respond I was sick for a couple of days this week.

Ok Taylor on the same commect I left you on step # 5, it's all the same you'll just right click on your broadband connection which is the "Internet Gateway" in your case and go on with the same steps on that comment at November 25, 2007 6:40 PM.

See you.

Hi there,
For the comment left on December 2, 2007 11:46 PM.

Can you tell me please what have you tried exactly and what is the type of connection your on now so I'd be able to assist you with it!!

See you.

Hi GMCF,

I've looked for your modem online it has no additional configuration, normal modem.

If you just tried the steps on this page I believe it will for sure work normally too, just go on the dashboard to "System" then "Network Settings" then "Restore to Factory Defaults".
Then disconnect your PC from the modem and turn the modem off(by turning the modem off I mean to unplug it from the wall outlet even if you have a power button for it.
After that when you connect the Xbox 360 to the modem turn on the modem again and all will be working fine for sure.

So the key is to restart the modem whenever you change device connected to it.
Cheeeers.

Hi Mike,

I'm not sure what exactly you wanna do but what I'm sure of is that you're trying to connect your Xbox 360 to Xbox Live through your laptop and that is called ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) and there is some steps you wanna go on first so that connection would work.

I'm gonna give you 2 links for some steps to try, try them both and I'm sure it will work:

All right. You guys are my last resort before I box up my XBOX 360 and get my money back.

Here’s my set up:
I’m connecting via a NETGEAR wireless router WGR614 v6 that is connected to a modem that’s connected to a new DELL Vista PC.

I am also using the old XBOX Wireless Game Adapter that came out with the XBOX.
I used to have an XBOX and an older windows PC that would connect easily to XBOX Live – no problems – with the same NET GEAR router.

Now that I have the 360 and a new PC – I’m having 0 luck.

Can you walk me through some things to try. I am not technically savvy at all, so I need easy to follow comments.

I have already tried recycling the modem and router – and have had some success initially getting it to recognize a couple of things like IP – DNS etc. But then it always fails at the XBOX Live part. It says it needs an update then it says it fails. Then if I try again – it stops at IP or the DNS or the ICMP or any of the spots really.

I messed around with my firewall today to try and see if I could open some ports, but I think I screwed something up. Now it won’t make it past the IP address even when I recycle the modem and router.

Any suggestions?
My Netgear router warranty is gone so now it costs cash money to talk to them on the phone, so hopefully I won’t have to do much router stuff.

Thanks in advance.
You’re my only hope.

While I was waiting for a response, I spoke with my ISP who provided me with this info:
------
Dear Charter High-Speed Internet Customer,

The Charter Value Added Services Support Staff focuses our support towards the connectivity between a cable modem and a personal computer. We also provide support for Charter High-Speed Security Suite and our Home Networking product.

Some actions are out of our support scope. However, as an optional support path, our Value Added Services Technician has sent the following self-help information on your behalf:

How to connect X-Box Live to the NETGEAR Home Networking Product for Online Gaming

Purpose

The self-help steps below are designed to help configure the NETGEAR Home Networking Product to work with the XBox 360 and allow the latest versions of XBox Live to operate through your home network.

Finding the Xbox 360 MAC Address

· Go to the System area of the Xbox Dashboard and select “Network Settings”.

Select “Edit Settings”.

· Proceed to the “Basic Settings” tab. Verify that the IP Settings are set to “Automatic”.

· Select the “Additional Settings” tab. Then select “Advanced Settings”.

· Ensure that you notate the “Wired MAC Address” pictured below. The MAC address will begin with a “00”.

Note: The XBox’s Mac address can also be found labeled on the outside of the Xbox.

Configuring Your NETGEAR

Login into the NETGEAR Home Networking Product by opening up a web page and typing in the following address: http://192.168.0.1

Enter “admin” as the “User name” and “password” as the “Password”

In the menu on the left side of the screen under “Advanced”, select “LAN IP”.

How to Assign an IP address to the XBox

· In the “DHCP Reservation Lease Info” section, place your cursor in the first box of the “Mac Address” Then add you MAC address obtained in the first step. Use the “Tab” key to move to the next box.

· Assign the XBox an IP Address that is not currently being used by another device on your network.

· Make sure that the IP address selected is not listed in “DHCP Client Lease Info” as pictured above.

Ø The IP address assigned must be within the DHCP “Starting” and “Ending” range. In the example below, the IP address must end in 10 through 19.

· Click “Add”. The gateway will reboot for the changes to take effect.

The X-Box’s MAC address and IP address should now be displayed under “DHCP Reservation Lease Info”.

· Finally, assign the X-Box IP address as the “DMZ Host”. Scroll down to the “Advanced” section of the setup page. Select “DMZ Host”.

· Enter the last two numbers of the IP address for the X-Box in the box following the “DMZ Address”. In our example pictured below, “19” was entered. Click “Apply”.

Enjoy your game!

----------------------------------
I executed these requests and it got me as close as I've gotten yet to being connected to Xbox Live.
It got me all the way through the list of confirmations - IP, DNS, MTU ICMP, etc. and it even said XBOX Live was confirmed and my NAT was open - (I could see it behind the little panel that comes up - it usually says Failed before I hit OK for the update) but it still went and failed when it tried to find the update. Then it went back to its old ways on me failing at the IP address confirm.

I feel like I'm really close, but I need help finishing it off. The port forwarding thing just isn't working either. i can't seem to figure out how to do it with my Netgear wireless router.

Can you help me?

Steve

Hi Sidearm,

I believe it might be something related to your Nat settings. So you need to test your Xbox Live connection and see which part fails.
If it's the NAT or Xbox Live, go to this link on the blog and you'll find the resolution:

Unknown said...

Hi Steve,

Seems you've tried soooo much!!
It's not supposed to take all that long but bare in mind that you have 2 things here that might be the main reason for the issue;
First, from what I got from your comment you're not using the xbox 360 wireless network adapter you're using the Xbox wireless adapter which might not allow your Xbox 360 to get full and steady connection at all.
Second, that you have a NetGear wireless router which usually needs opening the firewall ports and lowering the firewall settings to its minimum, and you said you haven't got luck doing so, most of the times it's the main reason to fail on downloading the update.

I reckon it was a good step that you achieve with your ISP support but in my opinion the main reason for all that hassle is the wireless adapter your using because I haven't try it before with the 360 and I don't have one right now to try, it doesn't mean even if it connects once that it can sustain the connection and sending, receiving huge data that the 360 needs.

Please call Xbox 360 support and they will try some steps with you if it's not working and I believe it will, they will transfer your case to a higher level of professional agents whom I'm one of, so we'll call you within 48Hours and it will be easier to deal with your case on phone okay?.

Waiting for your call, I might be the one who answer it lol.

Hi,

So I've been trying for a couple of days to get my ICS working properly, but nothing I try is working. I think it's something I recently did specifically with my computer, since I am able to connect through my brother's laptop and used to be able to connect through mine.

The various network connections I have are Wireless Network Connection, Local Area Connection, LAN3, 1392 Connection 2, and Himachi. I've disabled LAN 3 and Himachi, and have set my wireless network connection to allow sharing with LAN. When I connect my xbox to my laptop, the LAN becomes "connected", but when I look at the icon for the connection only the left computer lights up. I remember when it used to work both the left and right computers lit up. When I check the packets, there's 700 sent packets and only 11 received packets.

If I test the connection with xbox live, I fail the "IP Address" test. When I try manually setting the IP address and DNS, I pass the IP Address but fail the DNS test. I've set everything on my xbox back to automatic/factory defaults ,but when I check the IP settings, I see that the address is 169.254.6.216

Do you know what I can do to fix this? Some of the things I've changed since I last know connecting through my laptop worked were installing Himachi and a TCP/IP Protocol for my Wireless Network Connection to be able to play a game locally.

Thanks a lot,
Eric

Hi c.j hoogie,

You didn't mention your type of connection.
Are you connecting the Xbox 360 directly to a modem, router or your trying the internet connection sharing from the PC?
It would be more helpful if you give me this information.

Unknown said...

Hi FLAME,

If you connect your Xbox 360 through the PC, for sure you'll need to allow ICS.
So go to this link on the blog and you'll find the steps How to share your internet connection on your PC with your Xbox 360 Console:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/ics-internet-connection-xbox-live.html

If you don't find an option to enable ICS, you can call Windows support and check with them if your Windows can enable ICS. Whether it can or not they can help you with this.

Cheers now,

Hello Alex,

Basically, when you get this error message it only means that your PC cannot assign an IP to your Xbox 360 and I believe this way you have an ICS through your PC, so the only way to resolve this issue is by following the steps on this page here:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/10/ip-failes-xbox-360-live-test.html

Then again make sure you've shared your connection properly.
Please feed me back with what you got to.

Hi

Ive been having trouble connecting to xbox live recently. I have a direct modem connection but every time i try to sign in the IP fails. Ive tried entering my IP address but it has still failed. Ive made sure ive unplugged my modem from the wall every time i try to connect but it still fails. I was wondering if you are supposed to do anything with the PPPOE settings? and because it is a pc not a mac i havnt touched any of the other settings. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Eric,

I can see you've been doing all well till now, trying to set it manually and after failing to restore to factory defaults is a good step.

It's always better to set it automatically but sometimes it's not possible so what we need to do now is to give it a final trial and if it doesn't work to set it manually again and I'll tell you how to overcome the DNS failure then.

First I want you to set it again to factory defaults to make sure you haven't try a thing and forgot, afterwards go on your Laptop and try these steps here:
1. Go on PC to “Start”
2. Then “Control Panel”
3. Go to “Network Connections”
4. You’ll find 2 main categories “Dial up” & “LAN or High–speed Internet”.
5. Under “Dial up” you’ll find your broadband connection, so right click on it & go to properties (which is your wireless connection in this case)
7. Then click on the advanced tab, you’ll find there the ICS options, all what you need to do is to untick all ticked options here.
8. Then right click on the broadband connection (the wireless one in your case) and select disconnect, after that again right click and reconnect.
9. After that you'll need to follow the steps on this page to share your connection the right way:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/ics-internet-connection-xbox-live.html
Also go on the steps on this page after that to make sure you have no IP conflicts or such:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/10/ip-failes-xbox-360-live-test.html

If it's still not working as you've done before set the IP address part only manually then test the connection maybe it will fail again on the DNS part, if so please follow the steps on this page under ICS part:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/dns-failed-on-xbox-360-live-test.html

If you are still facing any other problem please let me know soon.
Cheers.

Hi Ph1l,

SO you're connecting the Xbox 360 directly to the modem and yo tried the above steps on this page under a. Direct connection to modem
You should just make sure there is no PPPOE settings set.
So go to System - Network Settings - Edit Setings - Additional Setting and clear PPPOE.

Hi c.j hoogie,

As you're using a router and connecting using a wired connection please try the steps mentioned above on this page under "Wired connection to router" and if it doesn't work contact your router support and ask them to update the firmware of your router, which is actually the software running your router.
Cheers.

Hi again,

Thanks for the help, but I'm still having trouble. I seemed to have fixed it a couple days ago, since I could connect to xbox live through my laptop after checking the "Allow other network users to control or disable the shared Internet connection" box in the advanced tab.

I messed something up again yesterday, though, and I'm not sure if it's because I was uninstalling programs or what. I went to the properties of my wireless network connection and saw that the "Intel Wireless Connection Agent" and "WLAN" were unchecked, so I rechecked them and thought that that would fix the problem. When I try to connect to xbox live, though, I still get the IP failure as before. Do you know what I might have done to stop my sharing from working properly? I tried the steps in the blog, but it still doesn't seem to work. My LAN says it's connected, but there's still no received packets (only sent).

Thanks again, and Merry Christmas!

Eric

Just to clarify, another thing I did since it last worked was downgrade from Windows Media Player 11 to 10, and I also changed some of the network settings for the player because I couldn't stream movies from the internet before. Would this possibly affect ICS?

We spent about 4 hours on the phone yesterday with XBox, Earthlink/DSL, and Linksys support, but still no luck getting an IP address from the XBox360. XBox had us reset to factory defaults and go through all of the settings. Linksys had us change a ton of router settings including channel, port forwarding, renamed the connection, generated new WEP keys... still no luck. They said that the modem in the console is bad. Is that possible?

I've tried over and over again to get it to read from my computer, and it did it just once. Then it went away for some reason.

And I've restarted the factory settings or whatever, still nothing.

And then I finally tried manually putting in all of the different number codes, and still nothing.

I've done it more than once, so I know that I've put all of the right addresses in the right spots.

I'm pretty much stumped. D;

im having a hard time connecting to Xbox live with this new 360...

Ok, so I have SBC Yahoo DSL, and the original modem that came with it (A little squared one that says Speedstream on the frong of it).

Since I have no router, I tried disconnecting the ethernet cable from the back of the PC and connecting it to the back of the Xbox, but when I tested the Xbox Live connection it failed at the "IP Adress" part of it.

I tried putting in my physical IP, but still, no success.

If there anything im missing? Im a retard when it comes down to this tech stuff, so yeah, might sound like a stupid question. lol

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help.

hi, this is ABraham (same poster as the comment above about not being able to connect from my modem).

I just want to add that Ive tried the "restore system defaults", and the "physical adress" methods, and neither of them are working for me.

Again, I have SBC Yahoo DSL internet with just a modem. No router or any other way of connection.

THanks again for your help.

alright ive tried everything in this tutorial and nothing seems to work. my setup goes as follows, my pc is hooked up to a wireless network. I was wondering if I can use an ethernet cable to connect the xbox to the pc using ICS. Ive tried everything it connects to xbox live but the ip address fails.

Im trying to connect to my linksys wireless router, and it does that fine. it passes all the tests up until the ip test, which it fails. i followed the steps you have, but i cant get it to work.

Hi Wayne,

You don't need to put your IP manually. Could you follow the steps on the above page under:
c. Wireless connection to router?

Cheers,

Hi School boy,

Sorry I can't call you ;)
But you can chek the resolution for your issue over here.
I understood from what you wrote that your Xbox 360 is connected to a wired router. Am I correct?
If so you don't need to put the IP manually so follow the steps on the above page under:
b. Wired connection to router

I believe this would help.
And if you still face the same issue, don't hesitate to leave another comment but with more details plz.

Cheers,

Hi honeyandjosie,

That's possibe.
Sometimes there might be an issue with the Xbox itself .

Hi Ali,

So you're connecting your Xbox to a wireless router.
Did you try the above steps under:
c. Wireless connection to router
And did you read carefully steps 3,4 &5?
Try follow these steps plz, I believe it'll resolve your wireless issue.

Hi ABraham,

You say you did all possible troubleshooting steps. So lets try other steps. It might help.
1- If your PC requires you to click on a connection icon containing your username/password details for your ISP before you can surf the internet, put those same details into the PPPoE section of your Xbox (Go to System - Network Settings - Edit Settings - PPPOE settings and clear it)
2- You might need to register the MAC address of your Xbox with your DSL company if they have a MAC access list option turned on. So contact them and check this with them.
I hope this helps.
Cheers now,

Hi tstek,

Yes, you can use an ethernet cable to connect the xbox to your pc using ICS.
And here's what to do:
First I need you to ensure that there is no PPPOE settings set.
Go on the System then Network settings then Edit settings then additional settings then click on the PPPOE and select clear settings.

Now on your PC:
1. Go to “Start”

If it's still not working as you've done before set the IP address part only manually then test the connection.

Unknown said...

Hi linksys wireless router user,

First are you sure you entered your WEP or WPA key correct (It's case sensitive)?
2- Are you sure there no PPPOE settings set? If there is you have to clear them.
To check this go to System - Network Settings - Edit Settings - Additional Settings - PPPOE settings and clear it.
3- Or there might be a "Wireless Access List" turned on on your router. So you'll need to add the MAC Address details of the Xbox.
4- You might need to update the router's firmware, so contact Linksys and ask them for your router's firmware update.

I hope this helps,
Cheers now,

Hey

When I try to connect it will pass the first 2 stages but on the IP address stage, it always fails.
When I go to more info it says that the console could not acquire a lease from the DCHP server. My DCHP is enabled so I dont know whats wrong, and yes my WEP is entered correctly.

I am currently using a brand-new Lynksys WRT54GS and it is connected to my modem.
It is a wireless connection and on the 360 is a wireless network adapter (official one, not bootleg)

So if someone could please help me, it would be much appreciated.

The error message says: Your console was unable to negotiate a lease with your DHCP server. Make sure that addresses are available on your server.

Im not sure what this means, so please help!!

Hey this is Alec
ive scoured the internet for help
but u seem to be the most responsive
Heres the deal
Ive tried hooking up my 360 to a wireless bridge, direct modem, and ics- all have failed
i get the same message, cannot negotiate a lease with DHCP server.
so i dont think that little errors for each method are the problem
i really want to get the wireless method to work
im connecting my 360 to a wap54g wireless bridge
ive got 2 linksys routers i use for cable, and dsl respectively
ive tried inputting ip address from my computer from ipconfig, and power cycling, all to no avail
i know my bridge doesnt have the xbox360 logo or w.e but i think the problem is beyond that at this point
also i cannot access wireless settings when the 360 is connected to the bridge
that pretty much all i can think of
thanks

Thanks for the help anyways!

Hi Alex,

Did you set your Ip settings manually to the following:
IP Address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1

- Make sure the Xbox Live Ports are open (They are UDP88,UDP3074, TCP3074)
- Make sure there are no PPPOE settings entered.

You can contact Lynksys support and ask for this or do it from the web site.

To all using netgear wgr614v6, I FINALLY GOT PAST THE IP FAILURE!!!! I did all of the above troubleshooting to no avail, but thanks for tips anyway. The thing that worked for me was to go into router settings on PC and under UPnP uncheck the top box to turn OFF this feature, click apply and then power cycle modem and router. Then redone my connection on xbox with correct wep key and wallllaaaa CONNECTED AT LAST!!! I really hope this helps someone, as I know the frustration of going thru xbox phone support, service provider support, lol, various blogs, etc etc etc. Good luck!!!!

Hey this is Josh.

Im currently having problems getting my ip adress on xbox live. My ISP is wow service, linksys router(trying to connect through wireless). I called linksys and they said just to put me my WEP key 1. I then put in all my ip addresses manually(gateway, IP, and mask). I really don't know where else to turn to since you are so responsive. I have also used the steps at the top of the page and no luck. HELPP!

Unknown said...

Hi Alec,

When you get this error "the console cannot negotiate a lease with your DHCP server" it only means that the console cannot get the IP from the router and usually in a wireless connection that would be because your wireless settings on the console is not set correctly.

I've read your previous comment again and it stopped me when you say at the end "also i cannot access wireless settings when the 360 is connected to the bridge" because if you mean that when you go on your Xbox 360 to "Edit Settings" you find the wireless settings down there deem that means you are probably using a nonofficial wireless network adapter, so I reckon when you say that your bridge doesn't have the Xbox360 logo you mean the adapter connected to the back of your Xbox 360, am I right??

Anyway if that's the case and you have a nonofficial Xbox 360 wireless network adapter we can manage to go throw some steps to resolve it, but if you are using the official one you just need to get your wireless router key (WEP or WPA key) and put it on your Xbox360 on the "Edit Settings" after selecting your wireless settings down there.

Please feed me back and I'm sorry I didn't realize what you mean at the first place.
Cheers.

Unknown said...

Hi Josh,

You said you've even tried the steps on the top of this page and it still doesn't work!!

I don't know what to say, but basically in a case like yours, having the correct WEP key and a linksys router it's really easy to work.

But let me ask you whether you have the official Xbox 360 wireless network adapter or not? If you have it I want you to change the WEP key on your router settings for example if it's 123456789 let it be 987654321, change it to any different number and try the above steps once more after saving the new WEP key and restarting your router, before you do so right down the old key in case you need to use it again.

Keep me informed with the situation , hopefully you'll be playing tonight :)
Cheers.

Hi there,

First you haven't state what is the kind of connection you are using :)

But I think it;s obvious that you are using your PC to connect through using the ICS method, and as you got limited or no connectivity that's due to an IP conflict between the IP assigned to your PC and that one assigned to your Xbox 360 and for a case like that I've made this page:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/10/ip-failes-xbox-360-live-test.html

Please follow the steps on it and I'm sure it will be working, also feed me back with the result.

hey guys,

I've got a problem with connecting to xbox live with my 360. First I'm in Iraq and I am getting 256K speed for an internet connection. I am on a network with a couple hundred other people. The internet provider is Tigrisnet24 and this is what they told me should work but it never did.

"A) On the MAIN MENU screen, press the drectional pad(D-pad) up or down to select SETTINGS, and then press the A button.

B) On the SETTINGS screen, press the D-pad down to select NETWORK SETTINGS, and then press A button.

C) On the NETWORK SETTINGS screen, press the D-pad down to select PPPoE settings, and then press A button.

D) On the PPPoE SETTINGS screen, press D-pad up or down to select CONFIGURATION, and then press the A button to toggle between ON and OFF settings.

We have to log on with a log on name and passord so I put those in and it didn't work. Also I didn't get the last part about toggleing anything because there were no options for on or off for anything. But if anybody has any answeres that would be great. Thanks alot

Hi August,

Did you try the steps on the above page under:
d. ICS (Internet Connection Sharing)
I believe it'll help

Unknown said...

Hi there,

You said you get the following error "this game requires a connection"
I believe it's a temp issue and will be reolved very soon
But lets get it working for you.
1- Try clearing the cache and here's how to do it:
Go to the System Blade and choose Memory, Once in the Memory Menu highlight the Hard Drive and press Y, X, X, Left Bumper then Right Bumper, X, X
You will then be presented with this message “Do you want to perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices?” Select “Yes” and the process will be performed.

2- If you are using a router, you'll need to check with the support that the firewalls on the router is low and that the following ports are open UDP88, UDP3074, TCP3074

And I believe it'll work after that

Hi AOL user,

This is the point. AOL makes difference.
To make AOL work through your PC or laptop you have to create a separate connection to the internet and stop using the connection AOL installs using its own software.

And here's what to do:
1- Go to control panel - network connections
2- When in network connections click create new connection
3- When it asks you what to call the connection, call it Xbox.
4- When the wizard comes up Click Next - then connect to the internet, then Click Next
5- Then, set up connection manually followed by next
6- Choose option "Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name or password", Click Next
7- For the ISP name Type in AOL, next Then your screen name EG queen@aol.com (must be with the @aol.com) into the username field and then your password into the password fields. If you have multiple AOL accounts ensure you use the MASTER ACCOUNT this is very important.
8- Confirm it, Click Next and check the box "Add shortcut to desktop".
9- Important. At this stage, disconnect from the Internet, and double click the new shortcut created on the desktop to connect to the Internet (called Xbox or whatever you called it).
10- Make sure you can browse the net after the new icon has connected. If you get an error telling you there is a username/password problem or a domain problem, the details you have put in are incorrect.
11- You MUST get this new connection working before proceeding onwards, as the whole set-up requires this new connection to be working. If you are absolutely sure that your username and password are correct and your using the Master Account, try changing your password, especially if it is longer than 7 characters, try to reduce it to 5 or 6 also try entering your details in lowercase.
12- Now go to Network connections in Control Panel
13- Right click the new connection should appear ' Xbox' (or whatever you named the connection)
14- Select properties of the Icon, go to the advanced tab check 'allow other network users to connect through this computers internet connection' then select the connection in the dropdown box e.g. Local area connection, then ok. (Don't worry if you don't get a drop down box, this is only if you have more than one network card)
15-Now connect your Ethernet cable to Xbox and PC.
The new connection icon you have created is to be used for connecting to the internet from now on.

Make sure YOU DON'T USE THE ORIGINAL AOL ICON

Always connect via the new shortcut created on the desktop. Also if you are already connected to the net, disconnect and re-connect using the new icon. Your internet browser will not start automatically liked it used to do. Just start it up manually after connecting with the new icon.

Make sure everything in your Xbox network settings is set to AUTOMATIC.
2- DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES PUT YOUR AOL Username/Password into the PPPoE section of your Xbox Dashboard. As this will prevent you from accessing Xbox live
(This is to be entered only for customers connecting to modem directly)

If you get an IP Address failure when running the test put these details into your Xbox dashboard and try again:-

IP: 192.168.0.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS1: 205.188.146.145
DNS2: 205.188.146.145

If you get a DNS Failed when running the test, look at the following:
As you are connecting via your laptop, Re-read the above steps and make sure you are using the new icon you created to connect to the internet, it won't work without it.
If you are connecting via your laptop. Make sure that you have not put anything in the PPPOE section of the Xbox Dashboard

I believe this helps and let me know what happens.
Cheers now

Hi Bill, Joey & Julian (Vista users),

So you are connecting your Xbox 360 to your (PC) laptop.
Basically it seems to be Internet Connection Issue as for your Xbox 360 to get internet from the (PC) laptop you should allow ICS correctly and here's how to do it:
* "First go on your Xbox 360dashboard to System - Network Settings - Restore to factory defaults"

1) Ensure you are connected to the Internet
2) Ensure your Xbox is powered up and connected to your chosen network card
3) On your (PC) laptop go to Start/Network
4) Click on the Network and Sharing Center Button
5) Click Manage Network Connections
Here you must identify which of the connections listed is your connection to the internet.
6) Identify your LAN Connection to the Xbox
If you have more than one network card, it will be the one that doesn't say "Network Cable Unplugged", as your Xbox should be powered up and the cable connected, unplugged means there is nothing connected to that network card.

Ignore the 1394 connection and if your set-up is simple there should only be one left. The network card normally has a manufacturer's description to help you. Again this is very important that you identify the correct card.
It should be labeled as Local Area Connection followed by a number

Ensure your chosen Local Area Connection is enabled if it is disabled, right click on the Local Area Connection and choose Enable.
7) Left click once on your Dial-up Network Connection to highlight it, the one you use to connect to the Internet NOT Local Area Connection
8) Right click the mouse, and select properties, followed by continue
9) Click on the Sharing tab at the top
10) Tick the "Allow other network users to connect through this computers Internet connection"

Please Note:

If the option to "Allow other network users to connect through this computers Internet connection" does not exist, this will be as a result of one of the following:-

- You don't have a network card installed in your PC (laptop)
You are sharing the wrong connection; it needs to be the connection that connects to the internet, not a local area connection
- You have a network card but it is disabled
- You have a network but it is not functioning correctly

11) On the "Home Networking Connection" drop down box select the Network card that is connected to your Xbox from the list.

Remember it will be listed as Local Area Connection followed by a number if you have a few network cards.

You won't need to choose at all if you only have one network card

Remember this option will only appear if you have more than one Local Area Connection. So do not worry if this setting is not present.

12) Tick Establish a dial-up connection whenever a computer on my network attempts to access the Internet
13) Click on OK and wait (you may get a warning stating that as your connection is active use settings may not be applied right now, ignore it)
14) Disconnect from the Internet
15) Connect to the Internet again
16) Now left click the mouse on the network connection that links to your Xbox. Highlight it and right click and select Status/Details. Look for the field that says IPv4 IP Address, it should read 192.168.0.1 If it doesn't, you have done something wrong, start the guide again.
17) Scroll down the list to the bottom and double click on Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) to bring up its properties
18) On your Xbox Dashboard, go into Settings/Network Settings, ensure the settings are set to Auto
19) When the details have been entered. Press Back on the controller. Now select Connect and you should be able to connect to Xbox Live

I hope this was helpful.
Cheers now,

Hi dbreezy,

I got from you that you are connecting your Xbox 360 directly to a modem. Is that correct?
If so you need to check the steps on the above page uder:
a. Direct connection to modem:
Also if If your PC requires you to click on a connection icon containing your username/password details for your ISP before you can surf the net, put those same details into the PPPoE section of your Xbox
Note:There is no Turn on and off button, You can either put in your PPPOE or clear them.

Hi there, name is Tylor.
Got a 360 for xmas, haven't been able to connect to xbl at all.

I can't get passed the IP test.

I have tried everything on the page, for direct connection, and for a connection with a router.

The thing is I can connect 2 different pc (1 mac and 1 XP system, and my roomate has had his xbox hooked up to live for the last year) and its just plug and go, I try my xbox and nothing.

I use a cable connection, and as my roomates xbox was on live I assumed it wasn't a router problem.

Any ideas? My roomates xbox RROD the other day so we are currently without live, which is rough...COD 4.....I miss thee.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I have both of the systems sitting right next to each other, but when I switch the Ethernet cable over to the 360 and attempt to connect, it says that I am disconnected. I would greatly appreciate it if you know what I should do.

Thanks so much

Would you be able to try your Xbox 360 on another connection? I mean if you can go to a friend or so.
We need to check is it the Xbox or your connection needs some configuration.
Tell me what happens and plz in the next comment try to give me more details about your connection (PC, Xbox and router or modem you use)

Cheers now,

Hey I have been trying to get onto xbox live for about 2 days. I read everything you said to bill, joey, and julian. I did all that but for some reason it still fails. I am connecting to my wireless PC and "Your console was unable to negotiate a lease with your DHCP server. Make sure that addresses are available on you server." I really really confused can you help??
