And the reason for this part to fail differs along with the difference of the type of connection you are using to connect your Xbox 360 console as follows:
a. Direct connection to modem:
1. Make sure first no other devices connected to the modem at the same time as some modems has an Ethernet port along with a USB port so, you might think you can use both at the same time & connect the PC through USB with the console through Ethernet & that's incorrect so, we need to disconnect the PC first.
2. Turn the modem off then turn it back on after couple of seconds (by turning the modem off I mean to unplug it from the wall outlet even if you have a power button for it), then go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then "Restore to Factory Defaults" and when it ask you to Apply Settings select "Test Xbox Live".
3. If it's still not working we need to get the Physical Address of your PC to put it on the dashboard of your Xbox 360 console as some cable companies are preventing any unknown MAC Addresses from connecting, to get the Physical Address of you PC connect the PC only to the modem then follow these steps here, the physical address will look like this 00-E0-98-C1-88-C2.
4. Go on the dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then “Edit Settings” then “Additional Settings” tab then select “Advanced settings” & put the Physical Address of your PC without the dashes on the “Alternate MAC Address” part and select "Done", when it asks you to Apply Settings choose “Test Xbox Live”.
b. Wired connection to router:
1. Go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then “Restore To Factory Defaults", when it ask you to apply settings select "Test Xbox Live".
2. Turn the router off then turn it back on after couple of seconds, then go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then "Test Xbox Live Connection".
c. Wireless connection to router:
1. Go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then “Restore To Factory Defaults", when it ask you to apply settings select "Test Xbox Live"
2. Go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to the "system" area then "Network Settings" then "Edit Settings" then select your wireless settings part down there "Wireless Mode, Network Name,..." the console will automatically then search for your wireless network and when it find it and you select it, it will ask you to enter your wireless key which is called WEP or WPA key - you can find it written on your wireless router or then you need to contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider) to get it from them - when it ask you to apply settings select "Test Xbox Live". 3. Just a kind of higher security that some router may use than the WEP & WPA key, you have also to accept the Xbox 360 connection to your wireless network on the router settings, you have to access to your router settings as mentioned before to check on the wireless security part whether your router apply a MAC filtering option, which is an option that blocks any unknown MAC address (the ID of any device) from accessing to your wireless network, and if it applies that kind of security you’ll find your Xbox 360 MAC address on the list there so, allow the Xbox 360 to get connected to the network, or even you can just turn off the MAC access control option instead of that, then go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then "Test Xbox Live Connection".
4. If it's still not working, you can put the Xbox 360 console - as a trial - in a closer position to the router to see wither it's going to pick up an IP address or not.
5. If even after you turn off the MAC filtering option on your router settings your Xbox 360 can't still get connected to Xbox Live you need then to update your router firmware (The router software) and if you don't know how to do so then call your ISP (Internet Service Provider) to assist you with that, then go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then "Test Xbox Live Connection".
d. ICS (Internet Connection Sharing):
1. Go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then “Restore to Factory Default" when it asks you to Apply Settings choose “Test Xbox Live”.
2. Allow the ICS option on the PC as mentioned before, then test Xbox Live.
3. If it's still not working, set the IP Settings manually to be:
IP Address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
Then go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then "Test Xbox Live Connection".
4. If it's still not working, you can get the IP address of your connection from the PC as mentioned before then set your IP manually on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console using this IP address, when it asks you to Apply Settings choose “Test Xbox Live”.
If you faced any other kind of troubles with this part failing even after you tried these steps please don't hesitate to leave a comment.

«Oldest ‹Older 401 – 425 of 425 Newer› Newest»Hey there , I was having trouble with my wireless network to my xbox, so i changed it to wired and it worked.
The only problem now is that a week later i try to connect via the wired network , but I get an error saying can't obtain IP.
It suddenly stopped working just because I moved the xbox and extended the cable : /
Any hints ?
Hi my name is Jared
I've tried the steps on this page exactly and it still doesn't work. It keeps failing at the IP address.I am trying to connect via router. I've turned the firewall off and enabled DHCP and it still doesn't work. I am using a linksys router that has Ethernet and wireless connections. I've also tried power cycling.
Thanks, hopefully you can help, I can't wait to dominate on halo 3.

hey, my xbox was running fine for the first 4 months or so i had it. but, i had a strict nat. and it was limiting my capabilities. so i read up on some forums to figure out how to change it to open. I changed a setting on my wireless router configuration page, turned UpNp on...i think..but i changed it back. now i can't connect to xbox live. i have my xbox ran through an ethernet cable into my laptop, and my laptop is connected to my wireless network. it was saying that my connection had little to no connectivity. and my xbox live test on my xbox says that it can't find the ip address. please help!
Okay I'm a bit stupid when it comes to tech stuff, I just want your recommendation for what steps I should follow.
My ISP is Charter, and I have an ARRIS modem, I hook my 360 up to the modem with an ethernet cable. I don't have my xbox right this second it's being fixed but it's in the process of coming back, but when I try to connect it says there's either a problem with my DNS, or IP.
Any advice on which steps to follow Xbox support? Thanks in advance.
Ok well i had my xbox live going for a while then i bought a wireless g router expander.. messed everything up.. now you know how you have the local and wireless connections? my local connection wont even read that my xbox is there.. it says limited or no acctivity!?! I'm Trent, and I need your help
I have spent 5 hours STRAIGHT trying to get Xbox live to work. I am not sure of my ISP but I think it is sympatico. I have a speedstream 6520 gateway-thingie. My ethernet cable is connect to that it and to my xbox. I have tried everything I could think of or I have found.
I am not using Dial up for xbox live, if noone can use the hpone while I play I won't be able to use it. Also My computer can't connect to dial-up.
When I go to NETWORK CONNECTIONS I click "local Area Connection" Then I got to properties. After that I click on the "advanced" tab and I see the firewall thing, but below is blank. I think that I need to check one of those boxes I've been hearing about.
I tried many things like putting in my ip adress manually, and putting in my Mac thing (physical location) Nothing works! I'm real flustered about this. Please help me.
I did all, I'm trying to use my laptop as a wireless router for my 360. The Network Adapter says "wired" but the IP adress keeps failing and failing, please help me.

Ok, so, I have a 360 and a laptop with a Sprint Wireless Air Card. I have the Ethernet cable hooked up from my 360 to my laptop and my 360 still fails on the IP address. I have tried the steps in the beginning of the posts but it still didn't work. Please Help!!!!!
Hey
I have a Mac Laptop that I've connected straight to my 360 using an ethernet cable. My Laptop is connected to the internet using a wireless modem. In the Test bit it says that the Network Adapter is Wired but IP Address keeps Failing?
can you help?
Hi
i was just wondering if u could help me connect to xbox live i tried ur steps at the top and they didnt work i am currently connecting through my laptop via ICS
Hey well im with big pond ADSL, i have a 2wire gateway (router and modem combined) and i use Ethernet cord to connect. My first problem was that network adapter said disconnected but i put the firewall settings down and allowed sharing on network connections so it now says wired which is good.
Now it says IP address failed. Out of the hundreds maybe thousands of times i tried it once said IP confirmed but DNS failed then future attempts where IP failing again. Ive tried both automatic and manual settings. For manual i put: sub net mask: 255.255.255.0, IP: 192.168.0.2 and gateway: 192.168.0.1. If i do it on manual it says the gateway is not responding to a network connection and if i do it on automatic it says the DHCP isn't working. Ive ran cmd on my computer and done ipconfig /all and typed the info there but then it just says gateway address is invalid. And i also tried typing the info for DNS servers to but it still says gateway unable to establish connection. If you need eny more info i can post it on the additional details. Ive also tried unplugging all computers and restarting gateway and/or xbox. Thanks
I'm also pretty sure DHCP IS enabled. It says it is when i access my network settings via 2wire.
SUPERB posting! Thanks for all your help, I just followed your directions to a "T" and it works perfectly now. I admit it took me about an hour... but, THANKS!!!!!!! Really good info here.
Thank you so much!!!!! you have helped me so much after hours of searching and messing about, all I had to do is switch off ICA and then turn it back on!!
Hi
I'm trying to get my son's XBox 360 to connect to XBox live via our broadband connection. His connection was working fine until we installed a new modem and wireless router. The system is set up as follows:
Modem and router are connected to our main PC. Another PC in son's bedroom uses a wireless adapter to connect to the main PC and broadband. This works fine. XBox 360 is connected to an ethernet card in son's bedroom PC. I've set up a bridge in windows to connect the wireless adapter and ethernet card in son's PC. I can ping the xbox from son's PC and it finds the xbox, but usually misses one packet(?). When testing xbox live, xbox cannot get an IP address from the router.
I've plugged the xbox directly into the router using an ethernet cable and that works fine, so nothing wrong with router or xbox. It just seems to be the connection of xbox to son's PC that isn't working, but it used to before we changed router!
I've tried everything - reconfiguring network using ICS, renaming computers, setting MAC address in xbox. Nothing works.
Hope you can help.
Thanks
Trev

I haven't really been following the comments on here, is it possible for me to connect my Xbox 360 and my computer with an ethernet cable. The computer is getting wireless from the modem downstairs already. When i try it says it can't find an IP address.
Ok so I'm connecting my Xbox to my laptop running on Windows 7. I have tried the internet sharing thing. I have tried creating a network bridge. I have reset to factory defaults. It either doesn't recognize the IP address or says it can't use a static IP address.
hey
thanks very much esp the advice about resetting the xbox to factory settings
I spent hours trying to connect and didnt get ip address from my router.
Then I contatced my isp for help after nearly 45 mins got thru to the right dept. and they couldnt help either - they gave me a number, which turned out the number for Sony (even after I told them it was XBox 360!!)
Then try again and about 30 mins later finally got a number for microsoft - who were closed by that time.
I had had enough and so changed my isp - got a new router and still not able to connect - spoke to the new isp, not very helful either.
Then came across this site and tried resetting the xbox and as if by magic - got an ip - it Works!!!
So thank you thank you thank you very much.
