IP Address Failed on Xbox 360 Live Test

And the reason for this part to fail differs along with the difference of the type of connection you are using to connect your Xbox 360 console as follows:

a. Direct connection to modem:

1. Make sure first no other devices connected to the modem at the same time as some modems has an Ethernet port along with a USB port so, you might think you can use both at the same time & connect the PC through USB with the console through Ethernet & that's incorrect so, we need to disconnect the PC first.
2. Turn the modem off then turn it back on after couple of seconds (by turning the modem off I mean to unplug it from the wall outlet even if you have a power button for it), then go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then "Restore to Factory Defaults" and when it ask you to Apply Settings select "Test Xbox Live".

3. If it's still not working we need to get the Physical Address of your PC to put it on the dashboard of your Xbox 360 console as some cable companies are preventing any unknown MAC Addresses from connecting, to get the Physical Address of you PC connect the PC only to the modem then follow these steps here, the physical address will look like this 00-E0-98-C1-88-C2.

4. Go on the dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then “Edit Settings” then “Additional Settings” tab then select “Advanced settings” & put the Physical Address of your PC without the dashes on the “Alternate MAC Address” part and select "Done", when it asks you to Apply Settings choose “Test Xbox Live”.

b. Wired connection to router:

1. Go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then “Restore To Factory Defaults", when it ask you to apply settings select "Test Xbox Live".
2. Turn the router off then turn it back on after couple of seconds, then go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then "Test Xbox Live Connection".

c. Wireless connection to router:

1. Go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then “Restore To Factory Defaults", when it ask you to apply settings select "Test Xbox Live"

2. Go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to the "system" area then "Network Settings" then "Edit Settings" then select your wireless settings part down there "Wireless Mode, Network Name,..." the console will automatically then search for your wireless network and when it find it and you select it, it will ask you to enter your wireless key which is called WEP or WPA key - you can find it written on your wireless router or then you need to contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider) to get it from them - when it ask you to apply settings select "Test Xbox Live". 3. Just a kind of higher security that some router may use than the WEP & WPA key, you have also to accept the Xbox 360 connection to your wireless network on the router settings, you have to access to your router settings as mentioned before to check on the wireless security part whether your router apply a MAC filtering option, which is an option that blocks any unknown MAC address (the ID of any device) from accessing to your wireless network, and if it applies that kind of security you’ll find your Xbox 360 MAC address on the list there so, allow the Xbox 360 to get connected to the network, or even you can just turn off the MAC access control option instead of that, then go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then "Test Xbox Live Connection".

4. If it's still not working, you can put the Xbox 360 console - as a trial - in a closer position to the router to see wither it's going to pick up an IP address or not.

5. If even after you turn off the MAC filtering option on your router settings your Xbox 360 can't still get connected to Xbox Live you need then to update your router firmware (The router software) and if you don't know how to do so then call your ISP (Internet Service Provider) to assist you with that, then go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then "Test Xbox Live Connection".

d. ICS (Internet Connection Sharing):

1. Go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then “Restore to Factory Default" when it asks you to Apply Settings choose “Test Xbox Live”.

2. Allow the ICS option on the PC as mentioned before, then test Xbox Live.

3. If it's still not working, set the IP Settings manually to be:

IP Address: 192.168.0.2

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Gateway: 192.168.0.1

Then go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then "Test Xbox Live Connection".

4. If it's still not working, you can get the IP address of your connection from the PC as mentioned before then set your IP manually on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console using this IP address, when it asks you to Apply Settings choose “Test Xbox Live”.

If you faced any other kind of troubles with this part failing even after you tried these steps please don't hesitate to leave a comment.

Hi there,

These steps were for Windows Vista. What version of windows do you use?
Also would you leave me another comment with more details about your connection at home to help you more?
I don't know how do you setup your connection at home(PC, Xbox 360 and modem or router)

Cheers now,

I'm telling you my entire problem from the start so it might be a bit long. Thanks for your help in advance.
I got an Xbox 360 about a month ago. I got an Ethernet cable to connect to Xbox Live just today, and I've been trying to connect my 360 to my Vista Ultimate PC using ICS. I use a USB Modem to connect to the inernet on my PC. I live in the UAE and my ISP is Etisalat. I have friends that play Live here so I know it works here.
So I connected my 360 to my PC via Ethernet, and enabled ICS on my current connection. Vista detects my 360 as "Unidentified Device" and it says it has limited connectivity. I have network discovery and sharing turned on. So when I try to join Live on my 360, it says connection error and when I test the connection it fails at the IP part. I've entered my PPoE username and password (this is the same as the ones I use when I connect to the Internet on my PC, right?)
So thats my problem. IP error. I have almost no knowledge of networking and I just followed the steps on xbox.com to connect my 360.
Oh and I've tried everything on this page, and nothing seems to help.

Hey again,

Yeah, sorry about forgetting the details. I use a direct connection linking my linksys 802.11g router with an ethernet cable(my cable works), to the back of my xbox 360. However, it still says that there is no connection. Any advice?

Thanks, Tommy

Hi Ryan,

If you receive this message on your PC:
Limited or no connectivity: The connection has limited or no connectivity.
This usually means that you have connected your Xbox to your PC and setup ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) but you have not shared the internet connection to the correct Network card that you have your Xbox connected to. Meaning that your PC's network card is trying to find an IP Address from your Xbox. Which it cannot do.

So you'll need to disable ICS and enable it again. Here's what to do:

"First go on your Xbox 360dashboard to System - Network Settings - Restore to factory defaults"

1) Ensure you are connected to the Internet
2) Ensure your Xbox is powered up and connected to your chosen network card
3) On your (PC) go to Start/Network
4) Click on the Network and Sharing Center Button
5) Click Manage Network Connections
Here you must identify which of the connections listed is your connection to the internet.
6) Identify your LAN Connection to the Xbox
If you have more than one network card, it will be the one that doesn't say "Network Cable Unplugged", as your Xbox should be powered up and the cable connected, unplugged means there is nothing connected to that network card.

Ignore the 1394 connection and if your set-up is simple there should only be one left. The network card normally has a manufacturer's description to help you. Again this is very important that you identify the correct card.
It should be labeled as Local Area Connection followed by a number

Ensure your chosen Local Area Connection is enabled if it is disabled, right click on the Local Area Connection and choose Enable.
7) Left click once on your Dial-up Network Connection to highlight it, the one you use to connect to the Internet NOT Local Area Connection
8) Right click the mouse, and select properties, followed by continue
9) Click on the Sharing tab at the top
10) Tick the "Allow other network users to connect through this computers Internet connection"

Please Note:

If the option to "Allow other network users to connect through this computers Internet connection" does not exist, this will be as a result of one of the following:-
- You don't have a network card installed in your PC (laptop)
You are sharing the wrong connection; it needs to be the connection that connects to the internet, not a local area connection
- You have a network card but it is disabled
- You have a network but it is not functioning correctly

11) On the "Home Networking Connection" drop down box select the Network card that is connected to your Xbox from the list.

Remember it will be listed as Local Area Connection followed by a number if you have a few network cards.

You won't need to choose at all if you only have one network card

Remember this option will only appear if you have more than one Local Area Connection. So do not worry if this setting is not present.

12) Tick Establish a dial-up connection whenever a computer on my network attempts to access the Internet
13) Click on OK and wait (you may get a warning stating that as your connection is active use settings may not be applied right now, ignore it)
14) Disconnect from the Internet
15) Connect to the Internet again
16) Now left click the mouse on the network connection that links to your Xbox. Highlight it and right click and select Status/Details. Look for the field that says IPv4 IP Address, it should read 192.168.0.1 If it doesn't, you have done something wrong, start the guide again.
17) Scroll down the list to the bottom and double click on Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) to bring up its properties
18) On your Xbox Dashboard, go into Settings/Network Settings, ensure the settings are set to Auto
19) When the details have been entered. Press Back on the controller. Now select Connect and you should be able to connect to Xbox Live

NOTE: You don't have to enter PPPOE settings if you are connecting using ICS

I hope this was helpful.
Cheers now,

Hi Tommy,

So you are connecting you Xbox 360 directly to the router.
But you didn't mention what exactly failed when you test Xbox Live connection :)
- If you get Network adapter disconnected go to this link on the blog:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/network-adapter-disconnected.html
- If you get IP failed follow the above steps on this page under:
b. Wired connection to router

If it was something else check the related page on the blog.
Should you have more inquiries don't hesitate to leave another comment.

Cheers now,

Hi my name is Joseph. I'm trying to connect with my xbox360 via direct connection with a modem. My modem is a OvisLink ADSL Modem. On the back it has a plug in for the phone line, plug in for the power, and a plug in for lan. On the back of my computer, there is only one ethernet port so I can't do anything with that. Anyway, whenever I try to connect, I disconnect the modem from the computer, and put the xbox cable in it. Then I try and connect to leave but it fails at the IP Address and when I look at more info, it says "Your console was unable to negotiate with a lease with your DHCP server. Make sure that addresses are available on your server." I need some help because I have tried everything and have no clue what to do. Thanks in advance. I have vista by the way.

Hi my name is will and I recently got an xbox 360. I am trying to connect to xbox live on an ICS connection through my laptop, but it always fails at the IP Address. I have followed your guide to the letter, and I have searched other websites as well.

I live in Egypt but I didn't think this would be a problem as I had read that it didn't matter what country you lived in as long as you had an internet connection you could connect to xbox live.

Could you please help cos Im getting tired of the same screen over and over again...

thanks

ok,i keep trying to connect to xbox live and it stops at mtu and it never get past it for some reason can you please help me?

Anonymous said...

Ok
I have no idea why this wont work but let me explain my problem.

Ok I have a 360 and want to connect to live. I have a network in my house with a wireless router. I am NOT trying to connect wirelessly, or by even using that router at all. I have a cable modem completely seperate of the router and the modem connected to the router. I have tried numerous things to make this work but still have no soulution can you help. My problem is when i test connection i fail at the mtu. From what I understand this should not happen, because I am direct connecting through a serperat modem. I have tried entering the alternate mac address, I have tried power cycling, and I have also tried what the xbox tech say to do with xx lb rb xx, and this has all been to no avial as i continously fail the mtu test. I am able to play when connected to the router, or when connected to the other cable modem in my house, just not when i connect it The cable modem that gives me problems.

The only thing that i can think of is that this modem is incompatible, or that I need to contact comcast(my isp) and somehow register this seperate modem with them, though i think will try to charge me if i do.

I am not understanding at all why this will not work because last weekend when my brother was home he did the same thing, except with a dfferent modem and received zero problems at all. If it helps the modem is a motorola sb5120.
I appolgize for the spelling mistakes as i am quite frustrated right now. Also I appoligize if you have already answered this issue somewhere else.

Thanks alot

Thankyou very much for your help, my Xbox connects to my computer now. Just one more problem, though, if you could help me with that. I got a popup balloon (on my PC) that said I have a Media Center Extender and asked me if I want to use it. I opened it and entered the key and everything. When it came to the setup part, it failed at the "Configuring Extender Settings" bit. Could you tell me what might be causing the problem and how I can fix it? Thanks again,
Ryan

Sorry to bug you again but I'm having yet another problem which is that my 360 periodically disconnects from the internet and I have to reconnect again. This was very annoying when I was updating my 360 software via Live. I still havent created a Live gamercard yet, so lets wait and see what happens there :)

Hi Will,

I don't know what exactly is the problem you are facing as you've tried all steps here as you said, but I can guess it's something like an IP conflict on your PC.

That's why I want you to try the steps on this page first then tell me exactly what you got:

For the comment left on January 20, 2008 8:16 AM:

Hi there,

Basically, the failure in the MTU part is supposed to happen only if you are connected using a router as the MTU or maximum transmission units is an option on the router settings which doesn't exist in a modem.

I just also want to confirm on something, that for a modem you can only connect one device although some modem will have two ports, an Ethernet and a USB port.

So, as I couldn't get it straight enough to understand, you have a router getting connection from a cable modem and on the other side you have another cable modem with a different connection.

From what you've said you can connect to the router but not to one of the two modems which is the part I couldn't get clear, is it the modem connected to the router or the one separate from the router that you can't get connected through??
As we said you can't connect more than one device to the modem so if you are trying to connect to the one connected to the router it's obvious that your problem is that the router already connected to this modem, but if you're having the issue with the separate modem that's another case.

Please send me again if it's the separate modem and tell me also again it's brand and model # and your ISP if that's the case.
Cheeers.

I am looking for some help with my xbox 360 and this blog seems to be the only place with good information. I purchased my xbox about a month ago and for the first 3 weeks I was able to get onto xbox live with no problem. Then, out of nowhere last week I started getting an IP address failure when I attempted to connect. It keeps telling me that it was "unable to negotiate a lease with my dhcp server." I have a wired connection directly to my cable modem and when my PC is hooked up I still have Internet service. I have attempted to assign a manual IP address, I have tried to put in a new MAC address, I have power cycled it several times. Nothing seems to work. To make matters worse I am getting the run around with Microsoft support and my ISP, each telling me it is the other's issue. Any help you may be able to provide would be extremely appreciated. Thanks!

Also check the steps on this page after that:

I tried the above explanation before but it didnt seem to work out. And it doesnt make sense that it works on my roommates Xbox and at my parents house but not my own..its odd..

Unknown said...

Hi Curtman,

Basically you're not able to connect your Xbox to Xbox LIve due to one of the below reasons:
1- You are trying to connect the Xbox via Ethernet to your cable modem and the PC via USB to your cable modem at the same time.
You cannot do this, its one or the other, USB or Ethernet not both at once with a cable modem
2- You said you tried all above steps. So if you tried the 3rd step (the Physical address one. You'll need to do MAC Address registration by your Cable Company because it's preventing any unknown MAC Addresses (Which is the Xbox360) from connecting.
3- If you are connecting your cable modem to a switch or hub you may get this message if another device has taken the only ip address available, in such a case you would be better off with a router.
4- If your PC requires you to click on a connection icon containing your username/password details for your ISP before you can surf the net, put those same details into the PPPoE section of your Xbox (this does not apply to UK users)
I hope you'll be on Xbox Live soon.

Cheers,

Yeah I am switching the Ethernet cable back and forth from my computer to my Xbox whichever one im using at the time. But its just one cable, just an Ethernet cable, and it worked before when i switched them back and forth on my old Xbox 360, but i had to get a replacement Xbox 360 because my other one crashed, and once i got the replacement it didnt work anymore when i switched back and forth. It only worked on my computer again.

Anonymous said...

Amazing. I just got off a 30 minute phone call with XBOX support, and they still can't find out why I cannot pass the IP test. Here's my setup/situation.

ISP: Road Runner Hi-Speed Internet (Time Warner Cable)
Modem: Motorola SB4200
Router: Linksys WRT54GS (confirmed compatable with XBOX live)
DHCP IS enabled.

Setup: Cable -> Modem -> Router -> PC(upstairs, wired to router) and XBOX 360 elite (downstairs - xbox360 wireless adapter)

IP Addresses: Confirmed different, therefore not conflicting.

xbox settings
IP Settings: Automatic
DNS Settings: Automatic

Test results
Network Adapter: USB Wireless
Wireless Network: Connected
IP Address: FAILED

The XBOX rep said that the only other thing I could check would be to plug the xbox directly into my router and check that, but it would be a HUGE pain. Not to mention that it's obviously connected to the router, with full wireless signal, but it just won't congigure the IP address. I don't get it. Everything is set up correctly but it's still not working. Not even the XBOX rep can figure it out!

I have also tried powering down all the components, waiting 30 seconds and then restarting, but to no avail. Please help. :-(

Hi Dennis,

So you're connecting your Xbox 360 wirelessly to your Linksys WRT54GS wireless router.
Fine, You just need to read carefullyand follow the above steps on this page under:
c. Wireless connection to router

Good luck,

Unknown said...

Hi there,

You mean you connect the Xbo 360 to the router and the router is already connected to the modem.
I believe that the reason of your issue is the router.
Try first make sure the DHCP is turned on on your router.
Also you can try to connect the Xbox 360 directly to the modem. If it connected fine it'll be the router's firmware that needs update. And by then you can just contact your router's support and ask for updating the router's firmware.

Cheers now,

Hi macbook guy,

Here's what you need to do to connect your Xbox 360 using your MAC:

1- Take the ethernet cable and connect it to the back of your Xbox and your Mac.
2- Turn on the Mac and the Xbox.
3- When your Xbox is on, go to the Xbox dashboard.
4- On your Mac, go to the System Preferences and click on “Network.”
From the “Show” menu, select “Built-in Ethernet” and set “Configure IPv4″ to “Off.”
Now go back to System Preferences (click “Show All”) and then go to “Sharing.”

Click on the “Internet” button and check the box next to “Built-in Ethernet.”
Make sure “Share your connection from: Airport” is selected as well.

Open Terminal (if you can’t find it, just type “Terminal” in Spotlight) and type in the following exactly: ifconfig en0. Press enter, and it should return something like inet 192.168.2.1 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.2.255.
If the first IP is something other than 192.168.2.1 make note of it, and don’t close Terminal.

5- Now, on your Xbox 360. Go to the Network settings, and set the IP Configuration to Manual, the IP to 192.168.2.2, the Subnet Mask to 255.255.255.0, and the router/gateway to 192.168.2.1 (the IP that I told you to make note of earlier — if yours is different, input that IP instead and change the IP Address settings on the Xbox to reflect the different address you wrote down, i.e 192.168.10.X)

6- Get back on your Mac, go to Terminal, and type in dig and press enter. There will be a lot of data, but you need to pay attention to only one line. Near the end of the output, a line will begin with SERVER. That’s the line you need to look at. Find the IP address in that line, and highlight it.

7- Go to the Xbox and go to DNS Settings. Set it to Manual, and input the IP that you just found in Terminal as the primary DNS server. Set your PPPoE settings to Off and your Advanced to Automatic.

8- Test your Xbox Live connection. I believe it'll be connected now.

Hi Jeff,

I don't know whether you've tried the steps on our blog exactly as it is or not but I want you to try it again:
1. Unplug your PC from the modem and restore to factory defaults on the "Network Settings" on your dashboard, make sure to restart the modem after this step.
2. get the physical address of your PC as it's said on this page:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/how-to-get-physical-ip-dns-addresses-or.html
and put it on the "Alternate MAC address" on your dashboard, also restart the modem after this step.

Please try it again and make sure to restart the modem after each step of them by unplugging it from the power source and reconnecting after a minute, and if that all doesn't work you can try another Xbox on your connection, for me I believe it's a problem with the actual connection not the Xbox.

If it's not working after all that please send me again and tell me what's your ISP and the brand of the modem you're using.
Cheers.

Hey there!

I'm wondering whether you can wave your magic wand and give me a hand.

I have a wireless router several rooms away from me, and a pc in my room which recieves the connection using a little usb antenna. I'm trying to plug an RJ45 cable from the back of the pc in my room which recieves wireless, into the back of the xbox, to connect to xbox live.

I've read several posts which discuss internet sharing and having to click 'allow other users to connect through this computer's internet connection', but when i go to do this the option isn't available to me. The boxes aren't there to tick! The only network connections i have are the 1394 and the Wireless Network Connection.

I'm stuck for what to do, can you help? It'd mean so much.

Thanks!

i can't connect to xbox live today even tho i have beforehand. i have an ethernet cable from my 360 straight into my p.c with an internet sharing network setup which used to work. Today it didnt the network itself appears to be working as there is no "limited conectivity" warning. I entered the I.P settings from the microsoft website (192.162.0.2 ect.) which worked and i put in the dns settings it gave me but now it passes the i.p adress and fails dns settings

Hello guys! I just recently spent over $150 on a xbox 360 wireless adapter, and a 13 mo subscription to live, and so far, I've spent a week trying to fix this problem. I have searched the net high and low, and have been unable to find an answer directly related to my problem.

I am using a Linksys Router WRT54GS
V7.50.0. and my ISP is Hughes I am sure this is compatible as I read somewhere, but here is my problem.

I run the xbox live test, and it always fails at ICMP. also, I will try again and then it fails at MTU.....If I keep trying it fails at MTU again and again. I had called xbox live customer support for help, but they told me to tweak some stuff, and now my MTU fails. before it would always pass and it was only the ICMP that would fail. I have no idea how to fix this problem.
also, this is not my router, its my stepmother's and she has a laptop connected to it wirlessly. so, if I mess something up where she can't connect or something, I'm serioulsy dead. so, I don't want to log into the router and just start screwing things up! if anyone can help thank you so much.

Im having ICMP and MTU failure.

Hi, this is Jeff again. I tried everything you said and still no luck. I even replaced my cable modem and have spoken with my ISP several times, they ensure me that there are plenty of IP numbers on the server. My cable modem is a Motorola SB5100 and my ISP is CableOne (my local cable company). Thanks again for any help you may be able to provide.

Hi Dan,

If the case is as what you described and you really can't find that option when you right click on your Wireless network connection so you are using a windows version called "OEM" which doesn't support ICS, usually it's the windows you got when you buy a laptop.

you can call your windows support to see whether you'll need to change the windows copy you're using or just to update it some how.

Anyway, if you succeeded in passing this issue please tell me what was the support response to your inquiry.
Cheers.

To the comment left on February 10, 2008 10:48 PM:

Hi there,

It's always better to set the IP and DNS settings to automatic but as for now it works manually for the IP you can l;eave it as it is.

Concerning the DNS failure, the major reason for it to fail using ISC is because of an antivirus software that block ICS, so check whether you have setup a new antivirus software during the past few days or even you have changed the setup on the current used one, you can even try toi turn it off for a while to check whether it's causing the issue or not and when you turn it off restart your connection to check whetehr it's gonne work or not.

Please feed me back, Cheers.

You didn't mention what's your type of connection?
Are you using a modem, router or ICS?
And who's your Internet service provider?
Check this info and leave me another comment with more details.

Hey mate,

I'm having some serious trouble with the connection to Xbox live at the moment. I've tried your previous suggestions by none seem to work.

Erm well I've recently formatted my laptop (previously Xbox Live worked fine (I kinda forgotten how to do it all now haha)), anyways my setup is something like this: I have a modem (Dynamic IP) connected to a wireless router and i'm trying to share my laptops connection with an ethernet cable connected from the laptop to the Xbox.

Now it always fails at the IP Level no matter what I do (something to do with the gateway). Now I'm guessing that when I go to view the IP details and such about the connection on my laptop its Default Gateway field should not be blank. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Chris

I've searched high and low and read all of the comments here, but I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong to get my XBOX 360 to connect to the internet through my laptop (using OS Vista Premium). Here's my situation.

1. I have a verizon USB card for broadband access.

2. I have an ethernet cable from the xbox 360 to my laptop connected.

3. I right click on the "national broadband access" (verizon) and go to advanced, then I click on the boxes to get ICS enabled.

4. I restored my factory defaults on the xbox 360, selected detect automatically and I got "IP address" failed message, so, then I went "manual" and I went to ipconfig on my pc, got my ip address, subnet mask, and I couldn't find my default gateway with Vista. So I assume I'm approaching it from the wrong way... anyhow, I've tried different combinations with it and that didn't work, on to next step.

5. Since step 4 doesn't work out, I then input the information on this webpage manual IP settings: IP Address: 192.168.0.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 192.168.0.1 - I still get IP Failed.

6. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I know that this can work, I'm just missing something. Please assist.

Dear casey,

Regarding the MTU issue you have.
You'll need to access your router setting on your PC & set it within the range 1364 – 1492 or you'd better call your router's support and ask their assistance in settingit for you.

But check with them first that this won't block anything for your stepmother's wireless connection.

"However large packets can block up a slow interface for sometime, increasing the lag on other packets so it’s better to be set to the lowest possible MTU, Which is 1365."

Hope everything goes fine and smooth.

Hi netgear cg814wgv2 user,

Basically what you need to do is to contact Netgear's support and ask them to lower the firewalls onn your router and also open these Xbox Live ports:

UDP88, UDP3074 & TCP3074

Also check with them if there any update for the router's firmware you need to get.

Thanks for replying and trying to help, but its still not working. I'm not sure what I'm missing here. I've followed the steps to a "T" and have also tried different ways. Here's the full scenario which may present a solution to you.
1a. Internet connection achieved on my laptop through a USB air card, wireless broadband connection...
1b. XBOX 360 connected to laptop via ethernet cable.
2. My network sharing center shows I have three potential connections. "Local area connection," National Access Broadband" and my wireless connection on the laptop. The one that I use to get on the internet is the National Access Broadband, Verizon, Wireless air card.
3. I've restored factory defaults on the 360, and still get "failed" when I go automatic.
4. I've tried it manual, input the ip address, subnet and gateway on the instructions you have posted, still get "failed"
5. I've done a "ipconfig" to get my ip address, subnet and gateway, however when I do that, my three adapters show up. The one for wireless broadband, the LAN, and my laptops wireless internal device. I show IP addresses and subnets for the LAN and verizon connection, however, the only gateway I show is for Verizon wireless and it's 0.0.0.0
6a. I used my broadband wireless Verizon Ip address, subnet, and gateway (which happens to show as 0.0.0.0 so I can't use this).
6b. I used my ethernet local area connection ip address, subnet, but a gateway address isn't shown.

I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong... I've tried sharing out the Verizon connection and I've tried sharing out the LAN (however since I'm not using this way to connect to the internet, I think that its not the route to go). Help :(

Hello,

I am trying to get Xbox Live for my 360, and I using a Sprint Mobile AirCard and i also have an Ethernet Cable. I was wondering how I would get past the IP Adress part, and also if it is even possible with what i am using?

I have my computer and 360 both directly connected to seperate modems, the xbox cant find the ip address tho with either modem. What can i do?

Unknown said...

Hi Chris,

Basically you are having a complicated set-up (wireless router and a wireless adapter in the laptop and then from the laptop you want to share out the connection to the Xbox 360).
In some cases you wont have a problem. But are you using a Netgear router?
Because it uses the address 192.168.0.1 by default for the router, which ICS also uses for the PC.
If this is your setup you wil get a similar error message to this:
"Internet connection sharing cannot be enabled. A LAN connection is already configured with the IP address that is required for automatic IP addressing"

In this case, you need to use bridging, ICS is not the best method for you.
I'll try get the steps for you.

Hi Andy,

Is it Voyager 190 ethernet modem that you have?

((A)) If it Voyager 190 ethernet modem, sorry to tell you so but you won't be able to connect directly using it as the DNS will keep on failing.
So you'll need to use internet connection sharing if your computer has two network cards.

And here's how to do it:
1- Go to control panel - network connections.
2- Click on create new connection
3- When it asks you what to call the connection, call it Xbox for example.
4- When the wizard comes up Click Next then connect to the internet, then Click Next.
5- Then set up connection manually followed by next.
6- Choose option "Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name or password", Click Next.
7- For the ISP name Type in AOL, next Then your screen name EG queen@aol.com (must be with the @aol.com) into the username field and then your password into the password fields.
If you have multiple AOL accounts ensure you use the MASTER ACCOUNT this is very important.
8- Confirm it, Click Next and check the box "Add shortcut to desktop".
Important. At this stage, disconnect from the Internet, and double click the new shortcut created on the desktop to connect to the Internet (called Xbox or whatever you called it).

Make sure you can browse the net after the new icon has connected. If you get an error telling you there is a username/password problem or a domain problem, the details you have put in are incorrect.
You MUST get this new connection working before proceeding onwards, as the whole setup requires this new connection to be working. If you are absolutely sure that your username and password are correct and your using the Master Account, try changing your password, especially if it is longer than 7 characters, try to reduce it to 5 or 6 also try entering your details in lowercase.
9- Now go to Network connections in Control Panel
10- Right click the new connection should appear 'Xbox' (or whatever you named the connection)
11- Select properties of the Icon, go to the advanced tab check 'allow other network users to connect through this computers internet connection' then select the connection in the dropdown box e.g. Local area connection, then ok. (dont worry if you dont get a drop down box, this is only if you have more than one network card)
Now connect your Ethernet cable to Xbox and PC
The new connection icon you have created is to be used for connecting to the internet from now on.

Don't use the original AOL icon to connect,

Always connect via the new shortcut created on the desktop. Also if you are already connected to the net, disconnect and re-connect using the new icon. Your internet browser will not start automatically liked it used to do. Just start it up manually after connecting with the new icon.
Make sure everything in your Xbox network settings are set to AUTOMATIC.

((B))If you are using a cable modem. You can simply connect your Xbox direct to the it.
But you'll have to enter your master account username/password into the PPPoE section of your Xbox Dashboard.

Cheers now,

Hi Chris,

Hi blueskydragonFX,

I see here that you don't have even internet on your PC. So you need to fix this first then share the internet connection with the Xbox 360.
Or you can try connect your Xbox 360 to a router or a modem if it has an ethernet port.
Otherwise you'll need to get an Xbox 360 wireless network adapter and connnect it wirelessly.

I am using a Sirra Wireless AirCard 595U for a wireless broadband connection. Xbox 360 is connected directly to the pc via ethernet cable. Everything was working fine for months. I do not know what changed, but all the sudden I am getting NAT - Moderate instead of open. I am at a loss of what to do. I have no experience or knowledge of networking.

Thank you in advance.

Hi Jamie,

Sometimes it happen that the NAT problem occur out of the blue! and in a case like this we need to deal normally with issue.

go on the step on this page:

And in addition lower the firewall settings of your router down to make sure it will all be working fine, and if you face any other issues please contact me back.

Hey yall!

I have a small issue that I haven't seen on here yet. It's more of an annoyance but it's kinda frustrating considering I like to think I'm fairly tech-savvy but can't figure it out...

I have wave cable, attached to a surfboard, attached to a D-Link DIR-655 with new firmware. My 360 is wired to the D-Link. I use a MAC filter and static ip's for a fairly large home network. SPI is enabled, but the 360 is in DMZ.

Now, When I fire up the 360 and log in, it tells me that I couldn't be logged into xbox live and asks if I want to test the connection. I test the connection and everything checks out and then I can log on to xbox live.

It does this every time without fail. It works flawlessly after the test. I'm wondering if my router is waiting for a prompt of some kind from the 360 or what?

Like I said it's more of an annoyance than anything else. I can live with it if I have to. I would really rather not reset everything to defaults if I don't have to. Maybe deleting my profile would help?

Thank you! I appreciate potential input in advance!

-Mike

OMG I am so frustrated! I keep trying to hook up to xbox live and everything I do my IP address fails, can somebody please help me!

Anonymous said...

I also get the IP Failed error. I have NO idea why. I've set up 4 computers to shared their connection to the XBox and all have worked before.

After reinstalling XP on this computer, my XBox live no longer works. On this computer, I've tried sharing the internet connection. I have two network adapters. A wireless one from which my PC gets it's internet connection and connects to the router (D-Link DWL-G510). My second card is a 3Com 3C910 Ethernet controller which is how I want to connect my XBox to my PC. I can share my internet connection on my 3Com card. I CANNOT share my connection for my DLink wireless card because it is not an option. It doesn't appear under any tabs. I've tried bridging these two connections. I can get on and play a game for about 4 minutes, but then it drops me. It drops me every time.

I have tried numerous combinations of ip addresses, gateways, etc. on the wireless connection, the ethernet connection and the XBox to get this to work. Nothing has. I'm familiar with power cycling, etc. I used to be an IT! But I'm about 5 seconds away from getting my money back from Microsoft. If you have any ideas, let me know!!!

Hi, I am Ponats,

I have been reading through your help settings for about two hours now looking for someone who may of had the same problem as I, but to no avail. (Didn't want to ask a common question already answered, you know. :) )

On my Xbox 360 when trying to go live, I get a failed IP Address. I have tried calling Xbox support and searching their site, but they couldn't help me.

The computer I am connecting to is a Win XP machine. It runs Zonealarm firewall. It is connected to the internet by a Linksys wireless G adapter. I have the adapter connected to a Linksys B router which is connected to a modem. The ISP is Comcast. I am attempting a ICS.

The status reads in the router:

Firmware Version: 1.50.10, Jan 16 2004

MAC Address: 00-0F-66-8B-AC-3C

Login Type: DHCP
Internet IP Address: 71.206.146.55

DNS 1: 68.87.73.242
DNS 2: 68.87.71.226
DNS 3: 0.0.0.0

The automatic Xbox settings go as follow:

IP Settings: Automatic
IP Address: 169.254.85.180
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Gateway: 0.0.0.0

DNS shows up all 0.0.0.0 on auto.

Wireless Mode is greyed out with "Not set."

PPPoE and Advanced settings are "Not set."

On the PC that is sharing, typing in the ipconfig /all: (image)

Driver for Network Connection: 3/4/2003 7.0.26.0

I have tried doing manual settings, but not sure 100% to put in them. Both on the comp and on the Xbox. I am totally lost. Thanks in advance... and hopefully I didn't post anything bad for me. >.>

Hi there, I have literally tried everything you have said and still doesn't work. Im at Uni so I have no router/modem. I have connected a laptop running windows XP to the wall using an ethernet cable. To connect to the Uni connection I have to register the Mac address of the laptop. I have an ethernet card installed but to get a second enthernet port I have a 10/100Mbps USB to Ethernet adapter. I have an ethernet cable running from adapter to XBOX 360. I have ICS enabled, everything set to automatic on both the Laptop and 360. I have tried putting the laptop mac address into the 360 manually and i have tried inputting the ip and dns manually. I have tried unplugging everything and plugging it back in and have tried updating all drivers. I have also tried swithcing off my firewall. I would like to add that it worked perfectly yesterday and I have changed nothing and now i get a limited or no connectivity message. If you have any advice I would be very grateful if you could reply or email me at cottee27@hotmail.com. Thanks, Julian

Hi Mike,

It seems it's a Nat issue you're facing.
There are four ways to overcome this issue but by aware, all of the methods have advantages and disadvantages. It is up to you which method you prefer and what works for you best.
Below are the four methods:

1- If you have an Xbox Live Certified router, use the certified firmware for your router.
You said you have the new firmware, if it is the most updated one you can skip his method.

2- Use UPnP. If your router supports this. Turn it on (Check your router's manual to find out how to turn it on. If you don't have a manual, simply download one from your manufacturers website) The router will work out the ports it needs to open for Xbox live.
If your router does not have this feature, check the manufacturers website for the latest firmware. (also make sure portforwarding and/or DMZ is turned off as they interfere with UPnP)

3- Port forwarding (You just contact our router's support and ask them to open these ports for you UDP88, UDOP3074& TP3074
Also ask them to lower the firewalls on the router)

4- Use a DMZ (De-militarized Zone)
(Check your router's manual to find out how to put your Xbox IP Address in the DMZ of your router. It is always best to use a static ip address when using a DMZ)

NOTE:
"Do not mix and match portfowarding with UPnP and/or DMZ. Each of the methods should be used on their own. Do not turn on UPnP and expect to be able to setup a DMZ or Portforward."

Hi D-Link DWL-G510 user,

So you're connecting your Xbox 360 to Xbox live using ICS.
What you need to do is disable ICS and then enable it again.
Follow the steps on this page on the blog for ICS setup:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/ics-internet-connection-xbox-live.html

And while you are sharing your connection from your PC to the Xbox 360 and got a limited or no connectivity sign on your Local Area Connection follow the steps on the below link:

http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/10/ip-failes-xbox-360-live-test.html

Hi Ponats,

Here's your issue "Zonealarm"
The free version of Zonealarm does not work with ICS (Internet Connection Sharing).
If you have this version you must disable or even un-install it completely for ICS to work.

Hi Julian,

As you are using Xbox live from University you will need to contact your IT department and ask them nicely to open up the following Xbox Live ports:
UDP 88
UDP 3074
TCP 3074
For the limited or no connectivity message you get, follow the steps on this link on the blog:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/10/ip-failes-xbox-360-live-test.html

Note:
Check first if this is not against your university rules so as no to put yourself in trouble.

Hi Paul,

The Xbox 360 console uses network ports to communicate over the computer that are running Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. And sometimes a firewall (Any firewall other than Microsoft firewall) that is running on the Windows Media Center-based computer will block Media Center Extender programs from using these ports.

So you must open the following ports for your Xbox 360 to work correctly with your computer for media streaming:
1- File name:Ehshell.exe Port:TCP5555 Direction:Incoming
2- Ehshell.exe UDP 7777 Incoming
3- Mcrdsvc.exe UDP3776 Incoming
4- Svchost.exe UDP 1900 Incoming
5- Svchost.exe TCP 3390 Incoming
6- Mcxnettw.exe Random Outgoing
7- Mcrmgr.exe TCP3932 Outgoing
8- Ehexthost.exe Random Outgoing

Hi Deano,

Basically, I don't know whether you are trying to connect to a modem or router but there are some basic steps tat must be followed.

1. Make sure that all settings on your Xbox360 "Network Settings" in the "System" area are set to automatic.

2. Restart the router or modem you are using after connecting the Xbox360 to it.

3. Again, if the issuer still persists please follow the steps on this page by word and feed me back.

hi, my xbox live hasn't been able to connect since the last few days, and i can't figure out the problem. i have had everything the same but it has just stopped working. i tried turning the router/modem on/off and reseting to factory defaults on the 360, but it still won't work. when i go to test the connection on the box it says that another device is already using that IP address that the DHCP has assigned to my console, but my xbox is the only other thing plugged into the router besides the actual connection to the internet. it says that it is unable to negotiate a lease with the DHCP server and that i need to work out any conflicts. so how do i fix this?

Help Please, i have a Ethernet cross over cable plugged from my xbox to my pc. i have a speedtouch 330 modem which has no ethernet port on it. When trying to connect to xbox live the ip address fails i have put in details manually like you have told other people to do but it is just not working. I also put in the password and username into the edit settings tab because on my dial up you need to put them in. Any ideas???

Please Help!!
Please ignore my first post. The Ip information was not accurate on that.

First let me state that I have NO KNOWLEDGE on networking. I am connecting via ISC with a USB modem. I have followed all directions to the letter, and I am still having problems. I have had my 360 on live before using all of the same equipment, but for some reason something keeps going wrong after a few months. The second time my network failed I was unable to get a NAT reading over moderate. This time I am unable to get the 360 back online. Here are my setting. Please Help

Hi there,

Basically you get this error because you might have done one of the below things:
1- You have not put your ip address settings on the Xbo 360 to Autoumatic.
Set it to automatic.
2- You might have entered your username/password info into the PPPoE in your XBox Dashboard.
Using a router you shouldn't put them in there.
3- DHCP might be turned off on your router.
You need to turn it on.

Cheers now,

Hi Max,

1- Are you sure you are allowing ICS coorectly and to the right local area connection.
Check the below link on the blog for ICS steps:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/ics-internet-connection-xbox-live.html

2- Are these the details you entered manually?

IP Address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server: 192.168.0.1

3- Are you sure in the Network Settings -- Edit Settings -- Additional Settings -- PPPOE settings is bot set. If it's set clear it.

Cheers now,

Hi M.Beck,

I think it's a temporary issue.
If you still face the same IP failure. Check on the above page on the blog under your type of connection.

Hi Jamie said,

1- I need you first to disable the ICS option on your PC, use this link but instead of checking the box remove that check mark:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/ics-internet-connection-xbox-live.html

2- Then turn off the whole thing (PC, Modem, Xbox 360) by turning off the modem I need you to unplug it from the wall socket even if you have a power button, wait for a couple of minutes afterwards turn the PC on first then the modem and go again on the same steps on the last link to check the box once more to allow the ICS, then turn on your Xbox 360.

Hopefully this will work if not, I'll tell you what to do, go on the same steps on the past link till step No. 6.

Instead of going to the "Advanced tap" keep on the general one and you'll find there a subtitle "this connection uses the following items" under this subtitle there are some options one of them is "Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)" double click on this one.

Another new page will pop up including a "General" and "Alternate Configuration" set all the options here to automatic.

On General "Obtain an IP address automatically" , "Obtain DNS server address automatically" , On Alternate Configuration "Automatic private IP address".

It's even better to set all your connections this way, I mean even the "Local Area Connection 1" or the Broadband connection so all would be on the same configuration with no hassle at all.

Then Restart your PC and check, if it's still not working repeat the steps "1,2" on this comment please and feed me back.

Cheers,

Hi

I've managed to connect to xbox live through ICS, ethernet cable from laptop to console.

When in game, it allows me to talk to friends and players. However when trying to private chat or join a session in progress, it never seems to work.

I've been told it may be something to do with specific ports not being open. But i really need some help please!!

Hi Xbox guy,
I had xbox live for about 3 months, and just recently got a new firewall and modem,

I cannot enable dhcp because then i lose the ability to print on the network. I have passed the Ip test, sometimes i pass the DNS and i cannot pass the MTU test.

When i run the test again i fail the IP test. After I manually change it it passes but then fails on either DNS or MTU.

Basically I have to keep changing my ip adress everytime i want to connect,

HELP?????
thanks in advance

Hi Halo 3 player,

You can create a new gamertag and you'll get another new one month free trial gold membership, that's the only way to get a new trial month.

N.B. you'll get this free trial only with first 3 gamertags created on your Xbox360.

neither of the Wired connection to router solutions have worked for me I just want my ip address not to fail. So I can play x-box 360 live what should I do??

Unknown said...

Hi there,

So you're not able to join private chat.
It seems to be an issue with the NAT.
So you have to contact your router's support to open or forward the 3 Xbox live ports which are:

UDP 88
UDP 3074
TCP 3074.
Also ask them to lower the firewalls on the router.

Hi there,

Regarding your issue with Xbox Live failing on IP, DNS or MTU tests. For IP you can check the steps on this IP page under:
a. Direct connection to modem

For DNS check the below link:

Hi there,

Regarding your issue with the IP & using a wired connection to a router.
Try the below tips:
1- Make sure the IP settings is set to Automatic.

2- If you entered your PPPOE settings in the Xbox 360 dashboard, you'll need to clear it.
Go to System-- Network Settings-- Edit Settings-- Additional Settings and clear the PPPOE.

3- If the DHCP is turned off on the router, you'll need to turn it on.

4- You might need to update the firmware of your router. Check with your router's support if there's any updates for it.

Hope it works

Hi there

Wow.. I just seem to be going backwards here and i'm starting to pull my hair out as i've been working on this now for six hours straight.

running Windows XP

Network cable from 360 to pc, Speedtouch ADSL USB modem connected

Tiscali broadband, Icon says 'connected shared' (but only after i uncheck and then recheck the sharing boxout.

DNS, I.P and subnet set to automatically obtain

LAC, DHCP enabled, DNS, I.P and subnet set to automatically obtain

First problem was DNS failure on the test, and as i've hunted through these helpful blog entires my situation has only worsened (although my knowledge of where and how to locate the more interesting apsects of XP networking has certainly improved). After following through on a few of the tech entries i've progressed(?) to i.p address failure, and now i'm getting the 'little or no connectivity' indicator from my LAC. If i enter some addresses manually, the connectivity issue is solved, but i still fail the i.p test ... Aaaargh!

I'm getting GTA 4 tomorrow and would dearly love to get my Live account up and running again, as it hasn't worked since i upgraded most of my machine, and did a clean XP install on a new Hard Drive.

Help me Xbox techies, You're my only hope!

hi there.
i can't connect to xbox live for some reason. i've read a bunch of comments and a million tips from people that are experiencing the same problem. Whenever i run the Connection Test it gets to the part where it says "Wired" which obviously means my xbox is hooked up to my router using the ethernet wire. ( i have a linksys WRT54G which is connected to my modem) and then when it gets to the ip part.. it stops and it fails right there an then. so what's up? i've tried unhooking up and turning it back on a million times and nothing.. also everything is set to manual and yes everything is obtained automatically and nothing.. i don't know what else to do.. please help me? :(

Hi Tim,

So I need you to try the above steps on this IP page under:
a. Direct connection to modem

Hi there (Wireless adapter user),

You don't have to do anything about them.
But if you get IP fails try the above steps on this IP page under:
c. Wireless connection to router

And if you face any other issues, don't hesitate to leave another comment.

Hi Help!,

So you just need to contact Windows support for this issue.

Hi netgear router wpn824 v2 user,

I believe the issue is that you need to update the firmware of the router.
So check if there's any updates for it & download.

Hi Bribu,

You didn't mention your connection type.
So check the steps on the above IP page under the type of connection you have whether Modem, router, wired, wireless or ICS.

Hi Tony,

If you tried the above steps on this IP page under:
b. Wired connection to router
And it's still not working so I believe the issue is that you need to update the firmware of the router.
Check with your router's support on on the router's site if there's any updates for it & download.

Hey there, my computer broke a couple of days ago and I have just had a brand new hard drive installed on it. I was on xbox live fine untill then and now when i try and connect the same way I did I just seem to fail everytime. I have connected directly from my xbox via ethernet to my computer. I am with AOL if that makes any difference and I have read some advice you have given to others about creating a seperate connection but that doesn't work either. the connection i made itself works, but the IP failure is still the same. I don't really see the point in the seperate connection because when i was previously set up with Xbox live i never did that.

i think my main problem is that when i select my default connection for sharing, I can't select which connection it should be shared with. There should b e about 2 LAN connections right? One for my USB modem, and one for my xbox 360, that used to be the case and it was so simple, now that connection neve even appears. I plug and un plug the connection to see if a "red x" appears any where it does not. Is there any way to get this connection up. because once i find this i believe it will be smooth sailing from there. thanks! Luke

Frustrated here.
I have Comcast as my ISP, Motorola SB5120 modem connected to a NETGEAR WGR614 v4 router.

With auto detect set on the xbox it will not read an IP address. I have enabled DHCP, all required UDP and TCP ports. UPnP has been tried both disabled and enabled.

I hooked directly to the modem to see if the router is the issue. With auto detect set on the xbox I get no IP reading. I power cycled more times than I care to count.

I then retrieved my IP and other addresses from a direct connection to the modem from my PC. Entered all of the available information and while I can get the IP address to confirm the DNS fails EVERY SINGLE TIME. I have entered the alternate MAC address, host, ip address, dns servers, subnet mask, gateway, and the kitchen sink. DNS still fails. I entered the default gateway as my DNS servers, DNS fails. I manually entered the IP address and left the DNS auto, DNS fails. Called comcast and confirmed DNS servers, DNS still fails. Power cycle again, DNS fails.

I used a Belkin F5D7230-4 with all the same steps attempted above and DNS fails EVERY TIME!

I took my xbox over to friend's house who has been connect to xbox live for months now. Set it to the exact settings he has, DNS fails still.

Comcast tells me everything is good from their side. MS tells me the same. One of them is lying to me or my xbox is the problem.

Can you tell from my long winded post that absolutely nothing has been succesful in helping me connect to xbox live? I would appreciate it if I did not receive the general run around of standard support responces as I have attempted them at least a dozen times with NO CHANGE what so ever. Which is the literal definition of insanity, something I try to avoid engaging in.

I purchased this console strictly because of the online capabilties. I should also note that my original xbox worked without issue the entire time I owned it, on the EXACT same network configuration. Roomate gets an xbox360, hooks it up, voila! Xbox live connected.

I have updated firmware on both routers. NAT is open.

If my xbox is defective, why have I not been told this during one the half dozen times I have spoken to MS?
One final note, a friend of mine bought a 360 two days ago. He has the exact same problem I do. WTF is going on? Why does one 360 work and two dont on the same setup? I have a very good understanding of networks at their terminology. I'm stumped, frustrated, mad, dissapointed, and one straw from throwing this thing out of the second story window. I'd rather just play xbox live but that isn't going so well. Any magic dust I can sprinkle on it?

Ok, here is all my information. I just bought the wireless adapter for xbox live. I have never gotten on the internet with my 360 yet. I am connecting it to a Linksys D-Link wireless G. (model wrt54g) On the system, network settings, I went to restore to factory defaults and tested xbox live. It failed right at the Wireless Network. I went into edit settings and entered a WEP key, then test xbox live. It said wireless network connected. Then the IP address failed. I set it as automatic and tried again and it failed. Then, I went to manual and looked up my IP address on the computer and entered that number and it still failed. I don't know what to do. So help me. (Mike)

Hi,

Here is my setup:

Modem to Desktop
Desktop to Wireless Router
Wireless Router to Wireless Desktop
Wireless Desktop to Ethernet Cable
Ethernet Cable to XBOX360

I (Wireless Desktop) have Windows Vista, Desktop has Windows XP. On my computer, when I click the Network Symbol in the System Tray, it says that I am connected to two networks, Thompson Network, which I have Local and Internet, and Unidentified Network, which I have only Local. Going to "Manage Network Connections", I see two connections, one saying Wireless Network Connection, and the other says Unidentified Network. Should I bridge the two connections? Turn sharing on for one or both of them? Help!

Hello xbox360 help:
I'm trying to do the ICS with my laptop via ethernet cable connected to my xbox and laptop. But each time I try I click to "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection" it gives me an error message saying "Internet Connection Sharing cannot be enabled. A LAN connection is already configured with the IP adress that is required for automatic IP addressing". I've tried manually changing the IP address on the LAN connection, but this also did not help.

Please help?

Hi Ty,

Hi Mike,

So you tried all the steps.
One last thing you'll need to try.
I believe the issue is that you need to update the firmware of the router.
Check with your router's support on on the router's site if there's any updates for it & download.

Hi Brad,

I believe that you can't connect using ICS if your PC or laptop is getting wireless connection.

But there is something called bridging. It might work.

I think it worked (but im not positive...) then I went back to the 360 and restored to factory defaults and it still didn't work. I again tried the steps that I had tried before and this IP address still fails. So you gotta help me again please. (Mike)

Hi, yet more problems getting onto Xbox live I'm afraid. Before posting here I've spent hours trawling through this forum trying everything you've suggested. My ISP is Virgin.net, my modem is inboard inside the digital cable box which supplies my TV etc, but it's branded as Scientific Atlanta. I have a Netgear Ma101 wireless access point plugged in there. It's old now (over 4 years) and there are no firmware updates for it, but I've never had any problem with it on my PC so I only want to change it if I really have to. I also have the official Xbox wireless device.
I've managed to get a good wireless connection up using Windows Connect Now with a flash drive. When I test Xbox live connection it fails at IP each and every time. I've tried the IP settings in Automatic and manual countless times. In auto the Gateway and Dns IP's are stuck on 0.0.0.0. When I enter the correct ones manually I get the same result. DHCP is enabled, I've also tried using the alternative Mac address, using my PC's physical address instead but with no change. I've reset to factory defaults, power cycling too. I'm getting really tired of the whole thing now.
Don't want to spend £30 on a brand new router only to find I have the same problem, hope you can help, Roy.

hell o my name is Javi I have been trying to connect live for a while now. i have tried everything you suggested but it always fails on the ip test. it says it cannot negotiate a lease with the dhcp server. i am using a cable modem connected directly to the xbox 360.

I have a problem with my xbox 360 with the "IP ADDRESS" failing. I am running my xbox 360 wireless using a Netgear router (I have fiberoptic lines through the neighborhood so I don't have to have a modem). I also have a Pelican adapter for picking up the router. I went on vacation and came back to it not allowing my online. I have changed nothing. Any suggestions? Any other information you need? Thanks for any help you can offer.

OK, I'm at wits end here.
Apologies, I haven't read through every comment as there is hundreds. If my problem matches one you've helped earlier, just point it out to me.

Basically, I got Live a couple of days ago. It was all working fine, then it stopped. It can't find an IP address. I'm using ICS method BTW.

I have tried all the tips you mention, putting my user name and password using the PPoE functions. Nothing. All dead.

I know this is a long shot, but is there anything I can do. I'm so stuck it's unreal...

What can I say.

I just tried everything... I had sent my console in for a red ring of death.. and the "new" one returns with a failure to get an IP from my WRT54G Linksys.

Well.. your post got me straightened out.

As best as I can tell. Doing a very clean, and careful full cycle of the modem and router.

And then following that with a "reset factory settings" on the 360, did the trick. The next connection was a big success.. and I could kiss you.

Thanks!

Hey i've had xbox live for a while and it used to work fine. Yesterday my dad got a d-link switch box. So that we can get internet in me and my sisters room. The ethernet cable runs from our router to the switchbox in my room. Then 2 cables go to my xbox and my sisters computer. And both things dont work. That is the complete opposite of what its supposed to do lol. Now when I take the ethernet cable from my router straight to my xbox like i used to do it doesn't work at all?

Hi there.

I am having a lot of issues trying to connect to Xbox Live (1 month). I am connecting through my wireless Mac laptop with an ethernet cable (wired connection) from the 360 to the laptop (ICS I think.) The Xbox 360 Live Test fails at IP Address. I have forwarded UDP 88, UDP 3074, and TCP 3074 on my AT&T router. I have tried countless times setting the IP manually and have tried automatically. I forwarded the ports for an unused IP address and used the same IP for the test and still failed. I have also allowed all things through my router firewall and regular firewall. Please help I am very desperate. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Hello! I had been using the instructions above for a long time and they were working fine. However, I got new computer parts and a few days later, my old hard drive failed. I gave it in to Best Buy to repair and replace the HD, and everything is working fine, except Live. The instructions and settings here, in addition to a ton of other things I've tried, will not work any more, and it fails the IP test every time.

One thing I have noticed that is missing from how it was before, is when I go into the ICS settings and there is the list of services with the checkboxes, at one point on my old HD an 'Xbox' service popped up on the list, two or three of them actually, and I checked them all off and it worked (with the rest of your instructions in effect, like I said). Now though, those are not on the list at all, and I don't know what the cause of that would be, but its probably the problem, or at least related. Do you have any ideas? I don't know if you even still answer this, but help would be much appreciated!

Hi you are my last hope, if you cannot help me i dont know what i am gona do,

i live at university in australia, my laptop cannot wirelessly access the internet, the problem i am having is attempting to get on to xbox live, i have brought a wireless network adaptor but this keeps failing at the 'wireless network' step, i have also attempted to use the ethernet cable that came with the 360.
As a result of wirelessly accessing the internet i have no modem to connect my cable to, i just plug the cable into the back of the 360 and into my laptop but this keeps failing at the ip address stage, i have tried manually entering the ip adress but to no avail, please please help me...

Hi Stuart,

First make sure this is not against your university rules so as no to put yourself in trouble.
I don't guarantee this will work.

Note: You can only connect to Xbox live if your university opened Xbox live ports (UDP88, UDP3074 & TCP3074)

Your university might be preventing any unknown MAC Addresses from connecting.
So we'll need to get the Physical Address of your lap top to put it on the dashboard of your Xbox 360 console. That way we'll make it think it's the Laptop trying top connect not the Xbox 360.

So here's what to do:

1- On the lap top go to Start.
2- Then click Run.
3- Then write down cmd
4- Then write down ipconfig /all
5- You'll find the "Physical Address" in the local area connection, it will look something like this 00-E0-98-C1-88-C2
6- Now go on your Xbox 360 dashboard -- System --
Network Settings -- Edit Settings -- Additional Settings -- Advanced Settings.
7- Select Alternate MAC Address
and type down the Physical Address you got from your laptop (without the dashes)
8- Now click Done
9- And Test Xbox Live.
It should work now.

Good luck.
Cheers,

Hi, I've been going crazy trying to get my xbox 360 to link up to my Verizon Actiontec router. The adapter gets a wireless signal but it cannot find an IP address

My firmware is up to date, I've opened the firewall ports, my router allows all MAC addresses, Automatic IP doesn't work and the manual numbers I was given do not work either. I have spent hours on the phone with microsoft, verizon and actiontec but no one can help.

Is it true that you cannot use Actiontec MI424 routers with the 360 adapter?

HELP PLEASE!

I also forgot to mention that my Wii is sitting right next to my Xbox 360, and it is able to connect, through wifi, to the internet using the same router that my 360 is unable to connect to using the Wireless Xbox Adapter.

Please comment back on this with help!

I looked up my WEP key passwords on the Linksys page which shows all of my router's information, including my IP Address, Subnet Mask, DNS, and WEP key passwords.

Do I still need to call my ISP to get information such as the WEP key and IP address?

Unknown said...

Hi Mike,

If you already got your WEP key, no need to call your ISP but if you couldn't get the WEP key you can contact your router's support and they'll provide you with your WEP key.

Cheers now,

Anonymous said...

Well, I did get my WEP key, but the IP address does still fail.
Another thing I should mention is that my router does show up saying D-link on the xbox 360, and it has a green light with a bar of signal. So, the xbox seems to be picking up my router's signal, it just can't get past the IP address when i try it on either automatic or manual.

Hi Mike,

Try this:
1- Go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to the "System" area then "Network Settings" then "Restore to factory defaults" it will ask you to apply settings first so click apply settings.
2- Then go back to the "Network Settings" and this time go to "Edit Settings", you'll find the screen here divided into "Basic" & "Additional" settings.

3- On the "Basic Settings" part you'll find down there your wireless settings (wireless mode, Network Name.....) so, select that part and your Xbox 360 console will automatically search for your wireless network, then you just select it from the list of networks if it found more than one network, here it will ask you for the WEP or WPA key & when you enter the key it will ask you to apply settings to you choose "Test Xbox Live" & it supposed to be connected then.

Cheers now,

Hey can someone help me out. I have this weird issue where i turn on my xbox and it connects to xbox live, but if i turn off my computer and turn it back on again it wont connect. I do the network test and it says the ip failed. Ive done everything from doing it manually, power cycle etc. and I do not know what to do. I am running my xbox live through a an ICS connection.

Anonymous said...

Following those three steps got these results:
1- "Restore to factory defaults" when applied, the test showed that my Wireless Network is "Not Connected"

2- "Basic Settings," found my wireless network and selected it, entered my WEP key and applied settings.

3- When I tested my connection this time, it showed that my Wireless Network is "Connected," but when it goes on to test my IP Address, it still fails.

I have an issue where if I turn on my xbox it connects to xbox live (ICS). But if i turn off my xbox and turn it back on again it wont connect to xbox live anymore. The only solution i found was if i turned off my firewall. Any suggestions as it never used to do this? Ive also tried enabling those ports but that didnt seem to work.

Hi Mike,

1- Make sure your wireless router broadcast (SSID) is not disabled. You can check your router manual for information about enabling SSID broadcast or even contact the router's support.

2- Make sure there is no obstacle between your Xbox 360 console and your wireless router.

3- Try to turn off any device that might interfere with your wireless network (for example, microwave or 2.4-GHz telephones).

4- And the most important thing:
If the MAC filtering option is enabled on your wireless router make sure you add the MAC address of your Xbox 360 console to the list of allowed MAC addresses.
Or you can even turn off the MAC filtering.
Hope this helps and don't forget to feed me back.

Cheers now,

Anonymous said...

My wireless page shows that:

1- The "Wireless SSID Broadcast" is enabled

2- The "Wireless MAC Filter" is Disabled

The xbox is downstairs, so there is a couple of walls between it and the router.

But since my wii can pick up the same router signal and connect to the internet (and is right next to my xbox) shouldn't the xbox still be able to pass the IP Address and connect to live?

Anonymous said...

I tried moving the xbox closer to the router, just to make sure. There is nothing between my xbox and my router, but the IP Address won't pass still.

Hello I have been trying to figure out how to connect to xbox live for the past 4 or 5 hours. I am trying to connect my laptop wirelessly to the internet and then in turn use a ethernet cable to connect to the xbox. I have read a decent amount of the posts and am still unable to get my xbox to pass the ip address test. I have selected ics on my computer which for some reason disables my ability to connect to browse the internet. If there are any other questions I need to answer in order to receive help please let me know and I will be happy to oblige. Thanks!!

Okay, I hope someone responds to this even though the last response was a while ago.
I cannot connect to xbox live through an ics connection through my pc. I have tried everything that you have tried everyone else but with no luck. I was only able to get a "Confirmed" IP address when I switched the one in the local area connection to 192.168.02 and then switched my xbox to manual and used the ip address to 192.168.02. However, I still can't get by the dns part. Please help as I am desperate.
Also on a side note sometimes when I would turn on my 360 I wouldn't have an internet connection on either my pc or 360.

Hey,

I've been pulling my hair out of frustating so I thought that it would be a great idea to post on this site.

Let me start from the beginning, I am using a Media Centre PC and my xbox is connected to my router (who is connected to my modem). I tried every single step explained on this page, except the wireless one, but still no success.

Whatever I try there is always the IP adress failed error. I tried connecting it directly to the modem but no success as well.

On this home network there is also another computer connected if that would affect it..

There is however one thing i cannot access. In some of the steps explained (such as the ICS one) I need to go to network connections. However, once there there should be a Dial-up one, I do not have one of them. What I have is :

At the top, Internet Gate , with a computer logo underneath saying Internet Connection

Underneath that is LAN or High-Speed Internet , which contains a Local Area Connection and a 1394 Connection. If I rightclick on the LAN connection and go to properties there is nothing except something about the firewall, but if I go to the 1394 connection and then to advanced there is the same layout as the Dial-up one (which i do not have), but if i tick the top box and untick the one underneat and click ok i cannot access the internet anymore, and if I go to settings there is no Xbox box i can tick or whatever it is.

I tried manually putting in the IP address and other info, the ones displayed on the website and the ones i did myself through cmd.

By trying everything out I also always disconnected the wall internet plug to ensure it would work. But yeah no success at all.

Sorry about all this information but it is really frustating and making me really angry, I would love to play my beloved Halo online and to access songs from my Media Centre pc.

Heaps of thanks in advance,

Thomas :)

Ok let's recap: I have an Xbox wireless adapter and router. My router is working fine (it provides internet to 2 laptops & a Wii which is directly below my Xbox) so that isn't my problem.

I have moved the Xbox closer to the router, and it still didn't work

I have put in the WEP key and it worked. It showed my router signal on the bottom of the screen.

I first tried automatic, and it failed. I then put in all the stuff manually and it again failed on the IP address.

So its not my router that is causing the problems, and everything else on this page under Wireless Connection didn't work.

What else can I do to make my Xbox Connect to Live!?!?
