ICMP Failed on Xbox 360 Live test

The reason for this part to fail differs along with the difference of the type of connection you are using as follows:

a. Direct connection to modem:
- You should not experience this issue with this type of connection but if it occurred try restarting the modem, and try the service again after 2 or 3 hours.

b. Wired or wireless connection to router:
- Restart the router, then test Xbox Live.

- Try the service again after 2 or 3 hours.
- Call your ISP or router manufacturer to update the router firmware, then test Xbox Live.

c. ICS:
- You should not also experience this issue with this type of connection but if it occurred try restarting all devices so turn you PC, modem and Xbox 360 console off then turn them all on again.

- Try the service again after 2 or 3 hours.

If you faced any other kind of troubles with this part failing even after you tried these steps please don't hesitate to leave a comment.

Hi there,

If your ICMP still fails after you tried the above steps as you say it seems to be something with Xbox Live server or your internet service provider.
So you need to check first that Xbox Live is up and running and also check with your ISP that the internet service is fine.

Hope that helps,

I just started having this issue, you say check the Xbox live server is running - how would i go about doing that? is there a website indicator somehwere?

Hi there,

You can check it on www.xbox.com
Go to "Support" and you'll find "Xbox Live Service Status".

But first as we said restart the device and try what we said on this page.

Cheers.

Hi there,

I think it's a matter of time till you find your connection up and running, it maybe even working fine now while I'm typing this.

If you still have the same problem please tell me when exactly it occur and have you been connected to Xbox Live before or this is the first attempt to connect with this console.

Cheers.

Hi,
I have recently been experiencing some xbox live connection difficulties i will explain in full detail what steps have to be taken:

I turn my xbox on, and have to wait until it prompts me to test connection, then i run the test and after 2 - 3 runs it passes and I am able to connect to XBL.

Then, once connected i can basically do nothing.
if i look at other peoples profiles, it says they have 0 stars and is as if they have silver membership.
if i attempt to send chat invites - it crashes and after a few minutes, it unfreezes and does nothing.
if i attempt to run a game / demo, i am disconnected on boot up.
and if i simply wait on the dashboard i am disconnected after
2 - 8 minutes.

And once i run the next test..
ICMP Failed.

I have tried many things to fix this:
- I have tried disabling my firewall as some people said this may be the problem.
- I have tried resetting my router and reconfiguring it from scratch with no prevail.
- I have attempted to renew the wires which connect my router and xbox incase there was a connection fault.

But the seriously weird thing about this "ICMP" problem is that i have had xbox live for just over 6 months and never had an ICMP related problem.

I appreciate any contribution of information that may be useful and will fully understand if you find you cannot help.

Thanks for reading and if any of this doesn’t make sense just say and I will try to explain in another more detailed way :)

Hi there,

First I don't know how long have you been experiencing this ICMP issue, but you know when you reach the ICMP part of the test your Xbox360 is sending an ICMP which is a request in the form of packets and waiting for a respond, repeating this request sending and respond receiving 4 times, that all supposed to take milliseconds.

So, when you get ICMP part to fail this means that even a problem in sending or another in receiving have been occurred due to packet loss at any part of the cycle like your router or Xbox Live Servers.

You can check any problem on Xbox Live server through www.xbox.com if you check the support page to see whether Xbox Live is up and running or not, if it's up and running at that time we have a problem with the router or the wires as you already said, you have tried 2 out of the 3 main steps that might resolve the issue which is to renew the cables and to disable the firewall, even lowering the firewall setting is supposed to sort it out if it was the problem.

So, keep the new cables and keep you router firewall turned off and 3rd forward these 3 ports:
UDP 88
UDP 3074
TCP 3074

After that it's supposed to work if not please send me back with the situation to look for another way to handle it.
Cheers.

Hi Tommy,

If you did try all the above steps so it seems to be an Xbxox Live outage.
So once Xbox Live server is back you'll be connected to Xbox Live.

Cheers now,

hey i heard xbox live is going to let users download one free arcade game for the server problem any truth of to this?

is there really a problem with the xbox live server? i just got satellite dsl and also have the same problem plugged straight to my modem. i also heard that satellite dsl causes a proble on xbox live due to the amount of time it takes the signal to go back and fourth, which causes lag. so is it true? did i really just pay 500 bucks for internet that i cant even use for xbox live without driving everyone and myself crazy

Hi there,

Sorry to tell you so but as per Microsoft Satellite service does not work with Xbox Live.

Sorry for the bad news :(

Actually Xbox Live does work with Satellite. You are not able to play games due to lag/ping, but you can logon, download games, get achievments, etc. I have been using Direcway, which is not Hughesnet without a hitch. So that comment was not totally true. Wish I could play others, but at least I can download updates and games.

I've had xbox live for one year now and i haven't played a game yet because i can't pass my ICMP test. The weird thing is I can do everything else I can get on to the matchmaking screen, make a party, and talk with my friends. I have come to beleive my router is at fault I have a version 8.0 but is there any firmware I would need?
Any advice would be helpful

Hi there,

Basically you this behavior occurs when you have an incompatible router or gateway or you have incorrect firmware in the router or in the gateway.
So check with your Router's support or Internet service provider if there's any updates for your router's firmware.

Cheers now,

Hi there,

I believe this is a temp issue.
So if you try the service later, it should bo up.

Otherwise try the above steps on this ICMP page.

I've also had this error. When I take the 360 into the room with the router and I hook it up using a wireless router and my 360 it works fine. It also plays games online, though with some lag, but plays none-the-less and we have satellite internet through direct tv.

Well as I moved the 360 into another room across the house I get the ICMP error. I ran a direct wire to the router and still the same. I ran a direct wire straight to the modem and did away with the router. Same ICMP error.

Any suggestions?

The servers for xbox live are not down, this has been over the course of 3 days. It works in the room with the router but no where else. Leaving it in that room is not a viable option.

Today is the first time im having a problem like this, im connecting directly to the modem, which is allowing all other computers to function perfectly with wireless and wired, my xbox is wired and when running test sometimes the MTU fails and other times it will pass but the ICMP will fail.

I have tried everything and i am quite experienced when it comes to networks, xbox site server seems to be down also at the moment but no indication of downtime from them, is anybody els having this problem recently?

I am waiting on xbox servers to come back online however i find it frustrating when im after purchasing a year gold membership and my gaming is interupted with this unknown error.

Will Microsoft ever function correctly?

Personally, it might be just me thinking this. But, it seems if I unplug the ethernet from my 360 and let it sit for a few minutes then plug the ethernet in that it works.
