Network Adapter Disconnected

Which is an indicator about the physical connection of the Ethernet cable or the USB cable of the Xbox 360 wireless network adapter so, if it's a wired connection when it fails it means that even the cable is not connected to the port on the back of the Xbox 360 console or not connected to the router or modem or PC at the other side or that basically the Ethernet cable is faulty, and if it's a wireless connection so the USB cable of the Xbox 360 wireless network adapter is not connected to the back of the Xbox 360 console or the wireless adapter is faulty so check the light on the adapter it might not be illuminating.

If you faced any other kind of troubles with this part failing even after you tried these steps please don't hesitate to leave a comment.

Hi there,

Actually the issue I see might be either with the ethernet cable or the ethernet port either in the Xbox 360 itself or the router. So you'll need to try your ethernet cable on another Xbox 360 to see would it work or not and try another ethernet cable on your Xbox 360. Also try to use the other end of the ethernet cable that goes in the router in another port (It might be an issue with that router's port)
If the cable is faulty it's so simple, you'll just get a new one but if it didn't work you'll need to check if it's the ethernet port in the console or the router.
Let me know what happened.
And Good Luck with your connection.

Wow, I have the exact same problem as Josuha. Although I'm not using the cable that came with the Xbox360 I know that it does work because I also use it to connect my computer to the router. Going through the networking connection test the xbox will get to the Xbox Live test and then say that the Network Adapter disconnected. Another odd thing is that I was able to access Xbox Live just yesterday with the same setup. This is also my second xbox and with the first 360 I had did not have any connection problems like this. Although it did happen to disconnect everyone from the router when it signed onto xbox live.

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi,

As I see now you say that your ethernet cable is working fine so the issue seems to be with the ethernet port either in the Xbox 360 itself or the device you're connecting the Xbox to either a router or the computer. So you'll need to connect your Xbox 360 to another device.

Try connect it to the computer if you are connecting now to the PC or vice versa.
Also try another port in the router.

And it would be much easier if you try another ethernet cable also.

And Good Luck

My 28 day old Xbox 360 reported my network adapter was disconnected even though it was connected. After verifying my ethernet cable was working I connected another Xbox 360 and it worked perfectly. Im sending my 360 out for repair tomorrow, will post when I hear something. Has anyone else had this hardware issue? I've searched high and low and cannot find any other instances where someone reported a network adapter hardware failure.

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi there,

Well as for my work I've seen this issue more than once although it's really as you said "rare" to happen but some how it occurs.

There is no exact reason for something like this but mainly it's even the user didn't use it properly or the Hardware already has a manufacturing problem which seems to be the issue with you here"just 28 days" and that occurs with any device in the world there must be a percentage of defected manufactured products.

But in a case like this it must be replaced with a new one, and I think as you just bought your Xbox 360 console from 28 days you have the right to exchange it from the retailer you bought it from not just to send to Microsoft and take 3 weeks to get it back!

Check with the retailer whether it's possible to exchange it from there or not then decide whether you have to send it to Microsoft or not.

Cheers.

I had the same problem. Even when everything connected it would say my network adapter is not connected. I also have a wireless d-link di 624 rev_c router. If you router is new check your firmware. I had firmware 2.53 it worked fine with my router. I updated it to 2.76 and it started giving me this problem while all the rest of my computers were connected to the internet. An xbox is maximum compatible with 2.70 firmware. They only have 2.76 on their website. But just type in 2.53 firmware in google and you'll find it. I did. So good luck with your problem.

I continuously get a "disconected error" but the wireless adapter is plugged in and powered as it glows red. I'm beggining to think its a problem with the adapter.

I'm unsure if my last comment didn't make it or if there is a delay in posting so if this is a double, please feel free to delete the first post (this has more information).

I am able to connect to live for up to 5 minutes. At that point, it will kick me off but allow me right back on.

I have reset modem, router, changed router, changed cable, switch to wireless bridge through laptop, confirmed a constant internet connection on other devices, and connected directly to the modem. All but the last do nothing where the last doesn't allow me to even connect.

In network test I either get Disconnected or it will give me a green light but then the next test (maybe 2-3 tests later) will go back to disconnected. Main configuration is a Linksys WRT54G router with a Cable modem and a Wired ethernet connection. My console has been repaired once before for three red lights. Any thoughts?

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi Chris,

I've deleted your last post as you said this one really got more information.

Anyways, this problem has nothing to do with the Ethernet cable as you've tried different ones, I only still have a question to know the exact reason causing this issue (which I reckon would be your Xbox 360 itself) when have you got your console back from repair?? Have this issue started directly after you got it or it was working fine first???

Please answer me so I'd be able to tell you exactly what is the cause of your issue although it seems to be your console.
Cheeers.

Chris Ridenour said...

It started months after getting my 360 back from repair. Though now it has been working.. Is there any reason a ethernet cable would work PC to router and not 360 to router? I am very confused here but it seems my problems have been alleviated.

Thanks!

Chris Ridenour said...

Scratch my last comment. Having problems once more. Now instead of 5 minutes it is anywhere from 10 to 3 hours.

Will I have to send it in again?

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi Chris,

Will, I don't know whether this would help or not I've just heard it, never tried it before myself but they said you might need to use a crossover Ethernet cable not a straight one, try this and if it's still doing the same sure that would be a problem then with the Ethernet port on the back of your Xbox 360 as the same cable is working fine with another device as your PC and even with a router or modem.

Hopefully the crossover cable thing will work, please let me know whether that works or not.
Cheers.

My 360 wireless network adapter's light doesn't turn on when I connect it to the back. It used to work when I turned it off and on and kept pulling in and out the usb cable, but now it doesn't seem to turn on anymore. Anyone know a solution to the problem and also i've had it for over a year so there's no warranty :(

Ive had the same problem with 2 different xbox's now... Its almost like something is shorting out in the adapter on the xbox.

I have two different internet connections in my house and multiple cables, and not 1 but 2 xbox elites. Something is going terribly wrong but I have no way to figure out any sort of solution.

Connections and cables work fine on my computers, but not on my xboxs?

I just tried to connect to Xbox Live for the past two days now it worked the first time that i did it but not anymore after that. I have a Linksys WRT54GC and its a wired connection. The first time I connected it it worked but after that it didnt. I tested out the router and the ethernet cable with another computer and it worked fine. I think its a problem with the Xbox 360. Someone please help me.

Hi Justin,

Well first of all I want you to test your connection by going to the "System" area and then to "Network Settings" then go to "Test Xbox Live Connection" and figure out which part fail in the test then follow the steps I put for this part on it's page on our blog here.

Also as a general step you can go to "System" then "Network Settings" then "Restore to factory Defaults" then when it ask you to apply settings, select "Test Xbox Live".

Anyway plaese feed me back with the part that fails in the test if it does and what steps have you tried.
Cheers.

Hi,

First of all I've read through your blog and comments and I must say you're doing a cracking job.

My problem lies here, with the "Network Adapter". I've only had my Xbox 360 for a few days so go easy on me ! My setup at home is identical to the "router setting" that they show on the Xbox website, whereby the cable goes into the modem, which goes via Ethernet to my wireless router (Netgear MR814 v2) and then via Ethernet to my PC in Port 1. In Port 2, it goes via Ethernet to my Laptop as it is right next to me.

When I try to connect my Xbox 360 in Port 3 via Ethernet (the one supplied in the Premium bundle) the Port 3 light doesn't illuminate. I suspected the cable is bust so I tried another one - no luck. I then suspected Port 3 may be dodgy, so I tried all the other ports, and tried another Ethernet cable that I know works, as I am currently using it now for my main PC ! Which only leaves me with one choice - the Xbox 360s' Ethernet port is bust. I test that by directly connecting it, so from the cable to the modem, then via Ethernet straight into the Xbox 360. Hurrah, it detected it but failed on the IP (but i'll sort that out later). I am curious as to why it doesn't detect it being "Wired" once I place the wireless router back into place ? It is a very old router so do you think I may need a crossover cable ? Regards,
Jon

P.S. Hope you had a good Xmas !

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi Jon,

Hope you had a better Xmas than mine man!

According to your issue, basically, this is a rare case that I faced during my past 2 years solving thousands of Xbox 360 live issues in my official job, but to be honest with you I haven't searched alot on your router now to get the exact reason because I'm in a hurry.

It's for sure something with the router not with the cable nor the Xbox even not the ports of the router, and as far as I can remember the past cases was the same and the issue was always with the firmware of the router, which is actually the software running your router that needs to be updated.

The best way to do it is to contact Netgear and ask them to update it and they will tell you exactly what to do, or you can go on this page:
http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/MR814v2.asp
you'll find there the latest firmware download on the left side of the screen.
Please update me with the result of updating the firmware for me to make sure I still have memory lol.
Cheers.

Anonymous said...

Hey,

My Xmas wasn't too bad thanks, hope yours wasn't too bad !

I checked the firmware of the wireless router out and it seems that my router is at it's latest firmware (V5.3). I am not sure whether it's just plain old and incompatible, or just that it's genuinely broken because as I said, I did check the ports and they do seem to work as I wouldn't be able to send this message I am doing right now !

However, the harder I think about it, I think it's just best that I purchase one of those Xbox 360 wireless bridges, the family receives a HDTV on the 28th and the 360 will spend most of it's time downstairs. Since the cable is upstairs, and my PC is upstairs, along withe the wireless router, it would be silly for me to drill holes and place a 50m ethernet cable from my room all the way to where the 360 will be spending most of its time. Plus, I will hopefully be on my way to Uni next year so I probably wont be taking the 360 as my little brother will play on it.

However, thanks for the initial suggestion - if you do have any spare time or anything and don't mind having a small search for my problem please do let me know, since as I said, it's wired up identical to the guides they put up on the official website and I don't really see what the problem is as i've checked each individual component. I'm sure it's something simple like an old wireless router !

But yeh, please do let me know of any ideas and such.

Regards,
Jon

Hi. I am trying to download Music onto my Xbox360, but when I plug it in directly to the computer using an ethernet cable, it says Network Adaptor: Disconnected. I know the cable is good, and also I know the 360 port is good as I was just online downstairs using both. I have never had problems with the cable or the port, I guess I am just doing something wrong. Thanks if you can help. =D

Hi there.
My brother is saying every time that we connect our wireless network adaptor that we get red rings of death. Is this possible?

I am having the same wired connection problem. it is definitely the port on teh 360 seeing as though i got 3 computers hooked up to my router through ethernet, 1 through USB, and 5 wirelessly. So it definitely is the 360. and yes, i tried about 6 different cables of differents sizes and makes....its the xbox. So don't hesitate , and take it in to get repaired!!!

Hi l0stb0y,

I don't think this is related to the wireless network adapter.
But if it happened quite alot it would be much better to contact Xbox support to see if your Xbox 360 needs repair or so.

Cheers now,

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi blitz_boi909,

First for the last couple of days there were some issues with Xbox Live.
But if you test Xbox Live connection and you still find network adapter disconnected. You'd better try another one first.
If the other one works, you'll need to get a new one.
And basically if yours came with the Xbox 360 package and it's still within the year warranty, you can contact Xbox support and they'll send you a new ethernet cable.

Cheers now,

i am also having problem with the Network Adapter. I know that Microsoft is having problems with signing in to the network since Christmas because they are overwhelmed. And, occasionally I have been able to log in this week and then get bumped out. That is not the problem.

The problem, identified above, is that using a wired connection to a new Airport Extreme route, the tests show Network Adapter Disconnected. When I plug that same ethernet cable into the back of my Powerbook I get access to the Internet. That tells me it is NOT a cable problem, but perhaps an incompatibility problem between this router and XBOX.

However, in one of the posts above you suggest that many of us might be experiencing success between ROUTER and PC, and failure between ROUTER and 360 because of the lack of a CROSSOVER cable. (a crossover cable has two of the eight wires transposed. most pc's can use a straight cable OR crossover)

Is it possilbe that the 360 NETWORK adapter can only use a crossover cable? Which two wires have to be transposed in order to test this?

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi Mr. Paper,

For the Xbox 360 you can use Straight Through (Patch) Cable or Crossover Cable

The reason the Xbox 360 can use either a Straight through cable or a crossover cable to connect to anything, is because the network card in the 360 supports MDIX. Which means it can automatically cross or uncross a cable as it sees fit.

Cheers now,

Anonymous said...

Hmm, It can use a straight or crossover cable, never heard of that before. Oh well.

Add me to the list. I used My 1 week old 360 yesterday fine on LIVE and today all I get is the disconnected Message. I too have tried two different cables, a laptop to the cable worked, the xbox not work when connected to a known good port and known good cable, etc.

Sounds like the ethernet adaptor inside the xbox. I will return it tomorrow, like I did the one I got for christmas 2 weeks ago. It's DVD drive went bad after three days use.

That's right 2 bad xbox 360's purchased at two different stores with two different problems.

Hi, I have a rare issue please help me¡¡
Last night i was playing halo 3 in xbox live, when the lights went out and the three rings of death appeared, it seems that my xbox is fine, at first my console didnt seem to recognize the wireless controllers, but now it does, the problem is with the network adapter, it used to work fine, but since that day, when i connect it,shows me the red light that indicates it is now ready to connect, so i go to the system part, launch the xbox live "error scan" and it say´s that the network adapter is not plugged in, i have tried to connect it and disconnect it, turning on and of my xbox but nothing seems to work, please im losing my mind, im starting to consider getting a new xbox but i dont want to precipitate on such a decision, please help me.

Hi there,

First you shouldn't take such a decision that quick. So why don't you try first your wireless network adapter on another Xbox 360. Just to check if the wireless network adapter is faulty you'll get another one and KEEP YOUR XBOX360.

Either the xbox is outsmarting me, or it's just broken. How can it be broken if this is my "Microsoft Approved" or whatever bogus crap it said? My problem is: Everything connects, it reads the IP, DNS, ICMP and everything. And once it gets to testing Xbox Live, my router says disconnected, I've tried port forwarding both ports 88 and 3074 and still nothing. Is it basically Microsoft sent me back crap? Or it's oustmarting me. It my be my firmware, I do not know how to change that, my router is a TRENDnet Wireless with 4 wired ports : TEW-452BRP(WLG-2210)

Any thoughts, or should I send this piece back to Microsoft?

Hi Skullboynat,

It might be that your router isn't that close to the Xbox 360 or there might be any obstacles in between.
So try to put the Xbox closer to the wireless router.
Also try your wireless network adapter on another USB port.

Hi,
I just bought the official 360 wireless adapter and a 360 Elite. I tried every suggestion that MS has as well as calling the tech support. The problem is either the adapter or the XBox itself because I get the solid red light and the connection test says the network adapter is disconnected. I tried plugging it into every USB port on the XBox and it still doesn't work.

So, I returned the wireless adapter and the new one didn't work. I then returned the XBox and the new XBox and wireless adapter still don't work. The wireless mode settings are grayed out.

Is this a known issue with the elites? Or is this just not meant to be?

Thanks,
Jeff

So try to put the Xbox closer to the wireless router.

2- Make sure you are not using the wireless network adapter and the Ethernet cable at the same time.

Otherwise it would be an issue with yout Xbox Elite.

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi Bump,

First you say you get the steady red light on the wireless network adapter. So it's fine.
You'll need to try it on another connection. If it works it'll be some configurations that you need to do.

1- Make sure your wireless router broadcast (SSID) is not disabled. You can check your router manual for information about enabling SSID broadcast or even contact the router's support.

2- Make sure there is no obstacle between your Xbox 360 console and your wireless router.

3- Try to turn off any device that might interfere with your wireless network (for example, microwave or 2.4-GHz telephones).

4- And the most important thing:
If the MAC filtering option is enabled on your wireless router make sure you add the MAC address of your Xbox 360 console to the list of allowed MAC addresses.
Or you can even turn off the MAC filtering.
Hope this helps and don't forget to feed me back.

hi there. I have a problem with my wireless xbox 360 network adapter. I have had it for about 7 months and as of last night the LED indicator stopped working. It doesn't turn red, yellow, or green. At first it did like a one second red blink and now it has stopped lighting all together. I have tried all three USB ports and have checked them with a charge and play kit, they work fine. I'm guessing that I need a new one but is there any way I can get this one repaired somehow? Repairing it might beat shelling out another $100 bucks or so for a new one.

Hello all,

I am having the same problem: when I connect my wireless network adapter and test xbox live, it tells me the adapter is disconnected. The option for wireless mode under edit settings in the network setting area of the system tab is gray and unclickable as well. I do have a telephone that constantly interrupts my wireless signal, and if I turned that off, as well as any other things that may interrupt the signal, enabled MAC filtering and added my xbox 360's address to the list, AND put it in the same room as my Airport, and STILL doesn't work, what should I do? I know the usb ports aren't faulty, because I have connected a camera via usb to all of them and viewed pictures on my xbox. I returned the first wireless router and exchanged it for a new one as well, and it has the same problem.

Well, i tried it, and when it tried connecting, on the first step, the Network Adapter step, it said "Disconnected", although the little red light is on, so its ready to recieve a signal.

im confused yo, anyone else got this same or similar set up? i really want to get Live, but i cant seem to find a way. any ideas?

My xbox 360 can't connect to live. I am using a 50 foot ethernet cable that connects to a Linksys Wirless-G Broadband router that connects to a Cox cable modem.

This problem occured yesterday during a thunderstrom. While I was playing on Live, I became disconnected from it. I tested the connection and it told me that I was disconnected from the network adapter. Also, it is giving me a red light next to the word "Link," even though I am connected.

When I plug the same cable into my PS3, it works fine. It just dosen't work on my Xbox 360.

I have tried using a different ethernet cable, swithcing sides of the ethernet cables, restoring it to factory defaults, using different ports on my router, and I have unpluged everything and put it back in, but none of those seem to work.

If the problem is the ethernet port on the Xbox 360 how do I fix it? Could it be the weather? Or should I just send it to get fixed?

I have been having some problems with my wireless network adapter. It was fine until a few days ago, when I turned it on and I couldn't connect to xbox live. The light was just red, but now there is no light. Is it the adapter or the xbox elite? Please help!!!

Hi

Fantastic page. In the cases of the where no lights are found on a wireless adaptor...I plugged it into my laptop and got the solid red light...this indicates to me that its a hardware issue on the xbox 360 itself. Could performing a system restore on the 360 help at all in this case...or is it a case of sending it in for repair???

Ok, so a week ago I got 1 red ring, however It has been working well every day for the past week. The only problem is I cannot connect to XboxLive. Everytime I test connection It tells me my network adapter is disconnected! I have a ethernet cable running to a wireless dock which is also used as wireless internet with all of our laptops. The internet on the laptops is working fine, so it isn't the dock. I've switched through 3 ethernet cables, so it isn't them. My final conclusion is that there is something wrong with the xbox, perhaps related to 1 red ring. I unplugged all wires from my xbox and left it for an hour, that didn't fix the problem either.

Do I have to send it in or am I doing something wrong?

As I see now you say that your ethernet cable is working fine so the issue seems to be with the ethernet port either in the Xbox 360 itself or the device you're connecting the Xbox to either a router or the computer.

Headset Adapter
