As we said on the important terms before, the Maximum transmission unit is 1500, but for the Xbox 360 it must be set within the range 1364 – 1492.
So please access to the router setting on your PC & set it within the range 1364 – 1492 or call your ISP or router manufacturer to assist you doing so if you do not know how to access to your router settings.
However large packets can block up a slow interface for sometime, increasing the lag on other packets so it’s better to be set to the lowest possible MTU, Which is 1365.

How do you access your router settings?
How do you open the router settings?
HI there,
The way to access to your router settings differs from one router to another but basically it will always be through your PC most of them would be as follows:
1. Open an Internet explorer page on your PC.
2. On the address bar type 192.168.1.1 as for Netgear routers and 192.168.2.1 as for Belkin routers or 192.168.1.1 as linksys routers, if you have even any other brand you can try these three numbers I reckon one of them will work.
3. Then you click GO.
4. You'll get your router settings main page on the screen asking you for your Username & password usually by default the password will be even the same as the Username (Username: admin, Password: admin) OR it will be password (Password: password).
5. You can there look for MTU settings, it differs from one router to another you can just look for it then set it to 1365 as we said before.
And for you buddy if you just got this error yesterday I believe that's something related to the Xbox live maintenance that was performed on all Xbox Live servers yesterday from 07:00 till 21:00, that's why I think it will be all working fine today, If not just restart your router first before you try anything else and if it's still not working after that try the last steps.
If you have any other questons please leave a comment.
Thanks for the help guys really appreciate it!
I changed the MTU settings to 1365 ran the test and passed but failed the XBOXLIVE portion. I then proceeded to re-test and failed the MTU test again. Any idea what is happening?
Hi there,
Actually when you set the MTU to 1365, It's supposed not to fail in the MTU again but try turn off the router then turn it back on again. Also you can try something when Xbox Live fails contact your ISP or router manufacturer to open or forward the 3 Xbox live ports which are:
UDP 88
UDP 3074
TCP 3074
I believe this would be resolving this issue. If not You'll need to ask your router's support to update the router's firmware. And if you have any other inquiries don't hesitate to leave another comment.
Good Luck
I accessed my router settings (dlink wireless) and there is no settings for MTU. I'm not sure where to go from here. Any help would be appreciated.
Hi there,
I'm sorry put I'm not that expert with all router models and even you didn't tell me which Dlink wireless router are you using so I could search for it.
This is the phone # for DLink support in the UK: 0845 612 0003.
If you are in any other country please visit www.dlink.com and choose your country then go to the technical support part to get their phone #, they for sure will know more about their router:)
Please feed me back with the results.
Cheers.
it still didnt qork i tryed everything i have a "2wire" router plz help!?!??!??!?/!1
Hi there,
I don't know what did you exactly tried as you haven't said but you have to set the MTU settings on your router to 1365.
If you don't know how check your router's manual because it differs from one router to another or even contact your router support team.
Cheers.
i dont have a router, and i just plug my internet cable(no modem) in the back of the XBOX. i fail the mtu test and i dont know how to change the mtu setting without the help of the PC. Should I use the router connection? will it resolve my problem?
Hi there,
The MTU settings is a kind of settings related only to router if you don't have a router it's just a system failure that may be resolved after a while normally by itself or you can even restart the console and check it once more.
check also whether your PC, if you got one, can access the internet or not.
please tell me what you got after restarting or even as you've been waiting now for 2 days, is it still doing the same?
See you.
i am at school and my connection is an ethernet cable plugged right into the wall and it keeps telling me my mtu test has failed, any ideas on what i should do
Hi there,
Ok, you can try unplugging the ethernet cable from the wall socket and turn off your Xbox 360 then turn it back on again.
The MTU should pass if it didn't it would be the settings for the internet connection the school is giving you and it might be that it is allowing less or maybe more transmission units than the number compatible with the Xbox 360.
it must be set within the range 1364 – 1492.
And if it's so I'm sorry you can't do anything yourself.
Cheers,
Hi ive tried every thing on here and it still says failed Im not sure what to try next
Hey ive tried everything suggested and my mtu range was set at 1492 and it still says failed. my isp is verizon and im usin a linksys router could that be the source of the problem?
I can't get my new xbox online with comcast. It says mtu failed but I don't have a router hooked up. The cable modem goes directly into the xbox.
Hi there,
I don't know what exactly have you tried but basically you have to set the MTU to 1364 for it all to work.
Make sure of that and please tell me also what you've tried if it's still not working then.
Cheers.
my mtu fails alsoo was just wonderin if you now if talk talk broadbrand is compatable
i used to have solved he mtu problem with my xbox but now whenever i do the test when it comes to the xbox live part of the test it doesnt pass
what do i do? please help
Hi Bassnotes,
Sorry for the delayed respond I was sick for the last couple of days.
I want you to try to set your MTU settings to 1364 not to 1492 I mean to set it to the minimum not the maximum that would be greatly better for sure.
Also I want you to lower down the firewall settings of your router then to restart the router, this way for sure it will work and here is how to access your router settings:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/04/how-access-router-settings-on-pc.html
If you still have any other questions please don't hesitate to leave a comment.
Cheers.
Thanks for responding. Ive tried what you suggested and it still does not work. Could my wireless laptop be interfering?
hi i have verizon fios and an actiontech wireless router. everytime i try to connect to xbox live the mtu fails, what should i do.
Hi Crackett,
Yes, Talktalk is compatible.
Hi gamertag rofferz,
Go to this link on the blog:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/xbox-live-nat-failed-on-xbox-360-live.html
and you'll know what to do to pass the Xbox live test.
Cheers now,
Hi actiontech wireless router user,
What yo can do is either to contact your router's support and as them to set your MTU between 1364 and 1492 or go to this link on the blog and follow the steps to setit yourself:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/04/how-access-router-settings-on-pc.html
Cheers now,
Hi Bassnotes,
Can you please give me some information about you connection here?
I mean how do you connect your Xbox 360 to the router and do you have any other devices connected to it??and how do you connect these devices too if there is any?
Maybe this will be more helpful, thanks.
well i set my verizon fios router mtu to 1365 and then 1492 but i am still failing my mtu test.
ANY SUGGESTIONS
i have the actiontec wireless router for verizon and fios and i tried changing my mtu within the router to 1365 and 1492 but i still fail the mtu test. any suggestions
Hi there,
You may set it to 1364 then restart the router completely by unplugging it from the wall outlet for a minute then reconnecting it again even if you have a power button for it.
Please tell me then whether it works or not.
Cheers.
I get an MTU failed error while testing my Xbox Live connection.
I want to adjust my MTU settings but I don't know how, because I'm not using a router. I'm connecting via my laptop. The laptop is connected to the internet via its wireless card. The Xbox 360 is hooked up to the laptop via ethernet. The ethernet and wifi connections on the laptop are bridged. So how do I adjust MTU on the laptop?
I can connect to Xbox Live if I don't bridge connections on my laptop, but that gives me a moderate NAT (obviously I want an open NAT and that's why I want the bridge to work). So the MTU problem has to do with the bridge, because there is no MTU problem when I don't use the bridge.
I hope I stated the problem clearly enough. I want to know how to adjust my MTU, not of my router, but of my laptop. Oh, and I'm at a hotel, by the way.
Hey there, sorry to join the list of questions but I'm really starting to get annoyed with this. I have a Linksys WRT300N wireless router. I turned off all the security and set the MTU to 1365. But it still fails the MTU test. I've tried power cycling and unplugging the router several times. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Christopher,
You can try the following it might help:
If you windows is Windows 2000/XP users:
Go to Start/ Programs/ Accessories/ Command Prompt and type the following:
ping -f -l 1472
(That is a dash lower case "L," not a dash "1." Also note the spaces in between the sections.)
Press Enter. Then reduce 1472 by 10 until you no longer get the "packet needs to be fragmented" error message. Then increase by 1 until you are 1 less away from getting the "packet need to be fragmented" message again.
Add 28 more to this (since you specified ping packet size, not including IP/ICMP header of 28 bytes), and this is your MaxMTU.
Note:If you can ping through with the number at 1472, you are done! Stop right there. Add 28 and your MaxMTU is 1500.
I hope it helps,
Hi Bucks1605,
It might be that you need to update your router's firmware.
Cheers,
I went to the Linksys website and the only firmware download they had for my router was the one I currently have, which is version 1.03.6. Is there another place where I can download a newer firmware?
hello im in a hotel and i use the 360 and the wireless hook up to the back of it but when i run the test the only thing that fails is the mtu is there any way i can change this, andy way at all.
can someone please tell me how i can fix my mtu settings so i can play live
it works thanks
Hi there,
As you can read on the original post by me on the top you must set it on your router settings and as you are in a hotel you must direct your request to the IT department of the hotel and hopefully they will approve to change it for you to the optimal MTU 1365.
BTW I wish you could play too :)
Cheeers.
For the comment on January 1, 2008 4:48 AM
Hi there,
You can just set your MTU to 1365 if you don't know how to do so call your router support.
Cheeers.
Alright, here's my setup: Comcast internet service, Motorola surfboard linked to a Belkin Pre-N Router and a Linksys I'mNotKeepinTrack router. As far as I'm concerned, the Linksys doesn't matter. I can't get past DNS on it or the surfboard so I'm using the Belkin. So, like everyone else, I'm stuck at the MTU failure. I've tried to go into the router and change to 1364 and 1492 but it won't let me change from 1440...1454 and only then on PPPoE, whereas I'm pretty sure I'm set up for Dynamic. I could be wrong.
I've gotten it to let me through a couple of times; usually it wants me to update my console but it won't, as if it's not connected. I check connection, MTU failure.
So yeah, if you have anything that could help that'd be great.
Address me as Hangman if you reply, if you would please.
i have a motorola modem and its saying that my mtu hade fail i dont have a router what should i do
i hVE linksys And when i type in ym ip to connect to router it wont work i cant connect i just get a search window
I think I am having the same problem as some of the folks above, but haven't seen an answer, so thought I'd ask again.
I have my XBox 360 connected directly from my cable modem, but I still get an MTU failure every time I try to log-in.
Again, I am not using a router at all, just straight from the modem into the Xbox.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Bret
Hi Hangman,
Usually when you use a Belkin Pre-N Router and have MTU problem the results are really weird trying to solve it, but we'll manage to do so.
First thing to try is to change the connection type from Dynamic, as for my knowledge about this router this connection type has a non configurable MTU option, then restart the router and try testing your connection.
After that I want you to forward the firewall ports for the Xbox 360 live connection which are:
* UDP 88
* UDP 3074
* TCP 3074
or if you don't know how to do so just get assistance from your router support.
Also make sure that the wireless mode is set to 802.11G
Please feed me back with the results.
Cheers.
Hi there,
Basically, if you don't have a router you aren't supposed to face this kind of issue but sometimes it occur as a temporary issue so you just restart your Modem and it should be working fine, by that I mean to unplug the modem power cable from the wall outlet then reconnect it after a minute or two.
If it doesn't work afterwards please send me the Model number of your modem, and also inform me if it does work :)
Cheeers.
Hi idietoskate,
Sorry I didn't get you straight but you didn't mention exactly which part of Xbox Live test fails and why are you trying to enter your IP.
Any way if IP fails go to this page on the blog under wired connection to router if you are using a wired one:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/04/ip-failed-xbox-360-live-test.html
Cheers now,
Hi Bret,
As you aren't using a router what you have to do is just turning off your modem then turning it back on. It should work, if it didn't try the following:
1-On your PC go to "Start" (Make sure the PC IS CONNECTED TO THE MODEM)
2- Click "Run"
3- Type "cmd"
4- Type "ipconfig /all" (there's a space between the g and the /)
5- Copy the "Physical Address" from your local area connection, it will look something like this
00-E0-98-C1-88-C2
6- On your Xbox 360 go to "System
7- Then "Network Settings"
8- Then "Edit Settings"
9- Then go to the"Additional Settings" tab
10- Go to "Advanced Settings"
11- Select "Alternate MAC Address"
Enter the "Physical Address" you copied from your computer (Do not enter the dashes)
12- Select "Done"
13- Then Connect the Xbox 360 back to the modem
Then Test Xbox Live, you should be connected.
PS: To connect to Xbox Live using your cable modem, you should connect the Xbox 360 to the modem only without the PC.
Cheers now,
I tried all the steps (thank you very much for the assistance), but it still fails at the MTU test.
I am beginning to think the problem lies with the XBox Live system as I've heard they have had some problems.
Can you think of anything else that it might be on my end?
Bret
Hi Bret,
Basically, to find out the part causing the issue now (It already seems to be your Xbox 360) I want you to try one of two steps; either to connect your consol on another connection like at your friend's for example or to try another Xbox 360 on your connection if that would be possible.
Try the most suitable step from these 2 and tell me what the result would be.
Cheers.
The only thing is, the same XBox never had problems connecting before. It's only been since I got back from the holidays, about Dec. 27th.
So is it possible that something has happened with the XBox between then and now?
Prior to that date, I had never had any problems connecting.
I will try one of those steps at some point, thanks again for your help.
Bret
I have a router thats plugged into an internet jack in the wall and my xbox360. When I test the connection, the MTU portion of the test fails. The router is a Motorola and there is no computer connected to it near the xbox360. What can I do to change the MTU setting of the router? Is it possible to take the router upstairs to a computer, change the MTU setting somehow to 1364, and take it back to the xbox360?
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Zak
How do I change the MTU setting on my Motorola router?
Hi Zak,
It's possible to do what you suggested but I belive it'll be much better if you contact motorola support and they'll help you with changing your router MTU settings.
Cheers now,
Hello,
I have bridged a connection between my laptop (running XP SP2), and the Xbox 360 using a crossover cable. I have my mobile device plugged into the usb on the laptop to provide the broadband internet. I am able to connect to Xbox Live with no problems, that is until I try and join a match on Call of Duty 4.
I have been told by a friend of mine that it is because my NAT settings are set at "moderate". How do I set them to "open"? Even the Xbox Live Support team is telling me that this is my problem, but without a solution to fix.
Please help!
Thank you!
Chad
Hi Chad,
Did you test Xbox Live connection?
Did it say beside NAT moderate?
So go to the NAT page on he blog:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/xbox-live-nat-failed-on-xbox-360-live.html
You need to contact your Internet service provider and give them the IP on your Xbox 360 and ask them to open for this IP the following ports:
UDP 88
UDP 3074
TCP 3074
Cheers now,
I connected the ethernet cable into my wireless laptop, yesterday when I got my 360. I bridged the connections and got xbox live to work. I have been playing it on and off since then and every time i play i have perfect connection but when I am in the middle of the game almost everytime my connection goes bad. All i have to do to get back on is test the connection everything is confirmed and it works again, but during the next game it happenes again and so on.
Hi trappedpenguin7,
I believe you'll need to try clearing the cache of the Xbox 360 first and here's how to do it:
1- Go to System
2- Then Memory
3- Then hard drive and press Y to view the device options screen
4- On the controller press X then X again then left bumper then right bumper then X then X again.
Then if it's still the same, check if there is any firewalls turned on on your Laptop, you can try turn it off and test the game.
Cheers now,
did both things still had problems
Hi trappedpenguin7,
Sorry to hear you're still facing the same issue.
But basically some games like Gears of war and call of duty need some specisl settings. So here's what to do:
You'll need to lower the firewalls on your Router and also you'll need to open the following ports:
UDP88, UDP3074 & TCP3074.
You just contact your router's support and ask them to do that for you.
Also you can go to go to the NAT page on the blog I believe it'll help you:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/xbox-live-nat-failed-on-xbox-360-live.html
And if you still have the same issue, just leave me another comment but give me some more details about your connection at home between the PC and Xbox and the device you use to get internet connection.
Cheers now,
Hey I have comcast as my provider and i'm using motorola sb5101 as my modem and is giving me the mtu setting i called xbox and they tried the xx left bump right bomp xx and still giving me the mtu setting then i called comcast and they said they cannot do anything about it please anyone help me out here
Hi JuNioR_TM,
As you are using a modem here's what to do:
You'll need to get the physical address from the PC to put it on the dashboard of your Xbox 360 console as some cable companies are preventing any unknown MAC Addresses from connecting, to get the Physical Address of you PC connect the PC only to the modem then follow these steps on this link:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/how-to-get-physical-ip-dns-addresses-or.html
the physical address will look like this 00-E0-98-C1-88-C2.
Then Go on the dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then “Edit Settings” then “Additional Settings” tab then select “Advanced settings” & put the Physical Address of your PC without the dashes on the “Alternate MAC Address” part and select "Done", when it asks you to Apply Settings choose “Test Xbox Live
And please me back if that worked or not.
Cheers now,
hi there i was just wondering if you knew the number to type into the websearch bit to get my router settings up i am on talk talk boadband thanks for your help
i followed your instruction but now is giving me the ip address failed
Hi JuNioR_TM,
Very good. This means that we're on the right track.
And now go to this link:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/04/ip-failed-xbox-360-live-test.html
under a. Direct connection to modem
I believe it'll work fine.
Cheers now,
Hi Crackett,
You left another comment on How to access your router settings through your PC page so I replied there:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/04/how-access-router-settings-on-pc.html
hey just stopped by to say i have fixed the problem. i remembered i had a 'old' router sitting in my closet i installed and now is working. thank you to everyone that tried to help me
hey.. my xbox live has worked fine until resently when i took it to a friends where we changed the setting to wireless connection.. when i brought it back and chaged it back to the original it started to say MTU failed... i havnt changed the router settings to anything of that sort is there a simple solution that im missing?
i have reset my mtu to 1364, 1365, 1492, and 1500 and i am still failing the test. i power-cycled everything before i tried them too. am i missing something?
Hi Tha Carter,
You'll need to reset everything on the Xbox 360 back to the default settings.
Restart your router and then go on your Xbox 360 dashboard to System then Network Settings then Restore to factory defaults. It should work.
Cheers now,
Hey I'm having trouble with the MTU even though I'm directly connecting to xbox via ethernet. A few things I hope you could clarify for me,
1. My modem is multi-user, 1 usb, 1 ethernet. Does using both at the same time affect the MTU?
2. Which MAC add to take? 1 have 2 options. One is under Thomson ST Remote NDIS Device, another under PCI-E gigabit ethernet. Which?
Any suggestions on fixing is appreciated.
Hi Nighthowl,
First: if you want to connect your Xbox 360 to a multi-user modem, you'll have to connect one device (Xbox 360 or PC for example) at a time.
Then when you want to connect the other one, you'll need to restart the modem.
And I believe this will resolve the issue.
Second: Try the MAC (Pysical address)under PCI-E gigabit ethernet.
Cheers now,
Nothing is working for me.
I have a direct connection through my modem and switch back and forth between my PC and xbox. Internet works fine, but my MTU fails. This has happened before and I waited about a month and it magically fixed. So is there anyway to speed up the process this time.
I had the same problem as JuNioR_TM and I was wondering for the instructions you gave him after he said he failed the ip test after getting his physical address do you start at the beginning of the instructions for the if you failed the ip test or do you start at the 3rd or 4th step?
Hi intheblender,
As you are using a modem here's what to do:
Cheers now,
Hi Chris,
Try the steps on the IP page from Step 1.
Cheers,
Thanks that worked but now I keep getting the MTU failed test. Xbox support told me to talk to my isp and they said they couldnt help do anything that concerns the MTU. I have a direct connection as I have said and my MTU is 1500. Do you know how I can fix this. I have an Arris TM502G cable Modem.
Hi Chris,
Try turn off you modem and turn it back on again then test Xbox Live connection.
If MTU failed again you'll need to get the physical address from the PC to put it on the dashboard of your Xbox 360 console as some cable companies are preventing any unknown MAC Addresses from connecting, to get the Physical Address of you PC connect the PC only to the modem then follow these steps on this link:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/how-to-get-physical-ip-dns-addresses-or.html
the physical address will look like this 00-E0-98-C1-88-C2.
Cheers now,
I have a direct connection from my modem to my xbox. My xbox live has been working fine for about 2 months (since i got it) then all of a sudden it wouldnt connect because of the MTU. So what would be a good thing to do to fix this problem?
Hi corey,
Could you read the above comment? The one right above yours. It's the reply for this issue. I believe these steps would help you.
Cheers now,
Ok, so i did that Alternate Mac Address thing, didnt fix it, and actually it didn't get past the IP that time. So i took it off, like i said ive got a wireless connection to my modem, no router.
I just had a question, I was previously unable to pass the MTU test when my modem was directly connected to my XBOX360. Once I copied my physical MAC address over it did work. It will be a few days before my router gets here, once I get the router do I switch the MAC address back to the XBOX one?
Hi there,
When you get the router you'll need to go on your Xbox 360 to System then Network settings and click restore to factory defaults.
I believe it'll work fine, but if you get the MTU failed again, just contact your Router's support and ask them to set the MTU on the router within the range 1364 – 1492
Or you can set it yourself from the PC. Follow the steps on the below link on the blog and you'll do it yourself:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/04/how-access-router-settings-on-pc.html
Cheers now,
I changed the MTU settings to 1365 ran the test and passed but failed the . I then proceeded to re-test and failed the MTU test again. It seems the only time it passes the MTU is imedeatly after I refresh the setting, but even then I fail the XBOXLIVE portion. I tried re-starting my router but still the same occurance. Do you have any idea?
Hi there,
If Xbox Live fails while testing Xbox Live you'll need to do the steps on the below link on the blog:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/xbox-live-nat-failed-on-xbox-360-live.html
Cheers now,
I am using ICS with Sprint mobile broadband. It uses USB to connect to my computer. I have the ICS turned on this adapter through the LAN adapter.
For the LAN adapter, my settings are...
IP: 192.168.0.1
SM: 255.255.255.0
dns: left blank
I am using a straight ethernet cable to my xbox 360.
It settings are...
IP: 192.168.0.70
SM: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS: sprint dns servers
I have successfully confirmed IP and DNS, but keep failing MTU.
I found this site to change my MTU settings to 1365...
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314053/EN-US/
I changed all of the ID's under Interfaces with a MTU value to 1365 (they were at 1500)
I am still failing the MTU test on my xbox 360. Would my USB modem for sprint broadband need to be edited in the registry? Or is there somewhere else I need to change the MTU settings?
Also, under the settings for ICS on my broadband adapter I allowed the following ports like you mentioned: 3074 TCP/UDP and 88 UDP. What computer name/IP address should be used? xbox or lan ip?
I am at a university and have registered my 360 and everything for the wireless networking. I use the wireless network adapter. What do I do when my MTU test fails?
I don't have a router to change or reset.
Hi Chad,
So it's ICS connection and for ICS you'll need a program called DrTCP to change your settings.
Also check this link, it'll be helpful if you have more questions regarding the MTU:

Hi there,
Basically you can't do anything yourself as the Xbox is already registered. So you can just ask them at university to set the MTU within the range 1364 – 1492 if this is possible.
Cheers now,
Hello. I have been experiencing a MTU failure for almost a month now. I have recycled everything on my network. The weird thing is that even though my MTU fails on both my xbox and my son's xbox, we can both still play on xbox live against other people.
When I called xbox tech support, they pointed the finger at my ISP which is Windstream. When I called Windstream, they pointed the finger at xbox. Now...my MTU never failed b4. Everything worked fine for over a year, even with 2 xbox's on the same network.
I need the MTU to pass so that I can see where the NAT's are on the xbox systems. I am trying to achieve open NAT's, but need the MTU to pass first. I have the latest firmware for my D-Link DGL 4300 router and it is on Xbox's list of compatible devices. My modem is a Siemen's Speedstream 4200. The modem is in bridge mode and the PPPoE settings are on the router. My bandwidth is 1.28 Mbps, which is just fine and has been the same for years. I did the MTU ping test and we ping just fine. Nothing has changed with my ISP.
I did go into my router and set the MTU to 1365 and that didn't work. I then tried setting the MTU to 1492, that didn't work either. I then went back to setting it at 1500, and that didn't work. I also attempted a direct connect to the modem, and that didn't work either.
Any suggestions to get the MTU to pass would be greatly appreciated.
i am using a Motorola Surfboard Modem SB5120, its about 2 years old and i havent used it in a few months but i have never had this problem. so im trying to access xbox live but when its tests my network, it keeps failing at MTU's and i was wondering what your suggestions would be to correct this problem?
Hi there,
Try turn off you modem and turn it back on again then test Xbox Live connection.
Cheers,
xbox 360 help blog,
I have reviewed your info over and over, and I have yet to try anything to make my connection pass all the way.
Every time I run the test, it always fails at the MTU test.
Here is my data:
Connecting via ethernet to laptop with xp/sp2
Laptop connects wireless to linksys wrt54g router with the latest firmware release (Jan 8, 2008)
Obviously I have enabled ICS.
I have set the MTU at 1490, since the max you say is acceptable is 1492. Default is 1500. I have tried using 1365, 1400, 1450, and 1500. I have also loaded DrTCP on my laptop to try to manually set all of the MTU values as the same.
IP and DNS are in automatic.
Hey,
When I connect my xbox thru the wall in my apartment(They provide the internet) I fail the MTU test but when i connect it through my dlink router it works fine. I want to fix this because when someone is playing on xbox live you cant use the wireless because it slows down to much and lags. Does anyone know why this is happening?
Hello,
My Xbox 360 failed at the mtu test. I am trying to connect directly to a modem from my 360. Any help would be appreciated thank you.
Hi there,
Basically what you have to do is just turning off your modem then turning it back on. It should work, if it didn't try the following:
1-On your PC go to "Start" (Make sure the PC IS CONNECTED TO THE MODEM)
2- Click "Run"
3- Type "cmd"
4- Type "ipconfig /all" (there's a space between the g and the /)
5- Copy the "Physical Address" from your local area connection, it will look something like this
00-E0-98-C1-88-C2
6- On your Xbox 360 go to "System
7- Then "Network Settings"
8- Then "Edit Settings"
9- Then go to the"Additional Settings" tab
10- Go to "Advanced Settings"
11- Select "Alternate MAC Address"
Enter the "Physical Address" you copied from your computer (Do not enter the dashes)
12- Select "Done"
13- Then Connect the Xbox 360 back to the modem
Then Test Xbox Live, you should be connected.
PS: To connect to Xbox Live using your cable modem, you should connect the Xbox 360 to the modem only without the PC.

i hav a netgear router n itried putting that code in the address bar and it keeps giving me stupid web pages to click on that has nothing to do with changing the mtu setting its really driving me carzy ive been trying to do it all day i jus wanna smash everything up. please help cuz i love my xbox

Hi there,
You can just contact your router's support and ask them to set the MTU between 1364 and 1492.

im trying to setup my xbox 360 live but my MTU fails. i have it plug from the xbox right into the wall jack. what should i do??
Hi,
I am having great difficulty getting connected to xbox live as it keeps failing the MTU test.
I have been trying for weeks to get it sorted but have had no luck!
I have my 360 plugged into my computer (via ethernet cable) and a USB modem with no ethernet port also plugged into the computer.
I am using BT Broadband and I believe that the default MTU is 1458. (This is what i don't understand as it is inside the parameters you say it should be in but it does not work.)
I have the DrTcP programme to change it and have tried various numbers (1364, 1365, 1458, 1492, 1500) but still cannot get it to work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I really wanna play on live!!!
Cheers,
Sam
Hi
Got m y360 on Wednesday and have been trying to connect to Xbox Live. I have a Speedtouch 330 Modem connected to the phone line. The modem connects to my wired Toshiba laptop from USB. The Ethernet cable provided with the 360 then is joined from the laptop to the 360. When I do the connection test everything else works but the MTU test fails. Could you please reply ASAP with any advice. My broadband supllier is Talk Talk Broadband.

Can you connect to Xbox Live through the computer without a router as I only have a simple modem? I was wondering if I will need one. I downloaded that Dr. Tcp and changed it to the right level but I will have to wait until tomorrow to test it.
I have been using Live just fine but now its failing at the MTU any reason why it would work all this time and just now decide not to?
Hey
I just got my xbox the other day and i went to play halo 3 and i have a strict nat
I have gone on to 10.0.0.138, i have a speedstream 4200 seris. I can only Disable my Nat and Napt, Nat only enabled Private Ip Address, Napt enabled (normally on) Nat and Napt enabled (concurrent)
When i disable it, my mtu fails on the test and i cannot get on the inter on my computer till i enable napt and it is really shitting me. I cant find where my MTU thing is to change it.
Oh yeah and i have a bridge connection
Thanks heaps
I fpossible could you reply to dylzo93@hotmail.
Dont worry if you cant.
Hi Simon,
You can connect using Internet connection sharing betwwen the Computer and the Xbox 360. It works with the PC connected to a modem.

Hi there,
Basically, not all problems have an easily defined reason but any conflicts in the connections might happen from time to another.
We just need always to know what is the steps to solve this issues, in your case you need to reset the MTU to 1364 and try again, if that doesn't work just restart the router you're using and it will then for sure work.
If at any rate the problem persists please feed me back, and then tell me what is the brand of your router and other devices connected to it.
Cheers.
Hi Dylan,
I want to tell you that you'll need at any case to enable NAT, and after that you just need to look for the port forwarding part on your router settings ad to open the ports mentioned on this page.
Try that and feed me back.
Cheeers.
hi, i've had my 360 since november and have tried phoning xbox with my probem but nothing has worked
my isp is tiscali and i have a thomson speedtouch 330 usb modem plugged into my computer and the adsl plugged into my xbox and my computer
every time i try to connect the dns test fails. i've been advised by both my isp and xbox support to use various different dns codes and power route the computer and modem and nothing has worked. please help me
Hi there,
Visit the DNS page on the blog and try the steps under your type of connection.

And if you face any other issues don't hesitate to leave another comment.

I have the same problem and i have tried everyting you have suggested and it still doesnt solve it! i have jensen scandinavia airlink 89300. and i have also tried with only modem
Hi, I am using a modem and have an MTU problem here just like everyone else and I did the alternate MAC address but it didn't work. I still received an MTU failure. The second thing is that I can connect it to my router but I need to open ports somehow on my router. I typed in 192.168.1.1 in the address bar and used "admin" as the user and "admin" as the password but all I got was a blank page every time. When I use the router, I receive a DNS failure and I have been told that has to do with the ports on my router. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
hi my xbox live had been working fine for over a year and now it has just said my mtu has failed. When i checked the mtu settings it was at 1400 an acceptable mtu level. i have tried a lot of the ideas you previously suggested, a couple worked but only for a short period of time. Any help you can give me would be greatly appriciated.
Thanks.
hi,
i am just having an mtu problem on my xbox 360 when i try to connect to xbox live. My xbox live had been working for over a year and then suddenly it stopped. i have tried many of your solutions listed above (change mtu, get physical adress) and some worked but for only a few hours. I use a wireless adapter to a linksys wrt54g v1. i have changed my mtu to 1364 1400 and 1492 and nothing seems to help. I was wondering if you had any suggestions or that maybe my wireless adaptor is broken since

Hi Jamaican Pilot, poorkids, Anonymous and Kyle,
To all users having MTU issues,
I see that there are many comments regarding MTU failure. Actually there's nothing wrong with yours routers nor your Xbox. Don't worry there's an Xbox live outage. Once Xbox live is back and running I believe you'll all be able to connect to Xbox Live.
Cheers now,
Ok I connected my 360 to my wireless laptop using an ethernet cable, ive changed the router settings to every Possible combination and it still says MTU failed...what am i doing wrong, i really want to get online
Look, I set my MTU in my router setup to 1464/1665. I unplugged my router for 30 seconds. I turned my xbox360, and tested and still says my MTU needs to be 1364, Which I have it to. I got the modems Ethernet cable connected to the router, I got the computers Ethernet cable connected to the router, and I have the Xbox360 Ethernet cable connected to the router. I need help, I bought the 3 months gold member ship card! Just wasted my money, so I want to fix.
Hi. I am connecting to xbox live through wireless internet ---> to a macbook via and ethernet cord to 360. The IP Address test passes and so does the DNS but the MTU fails. I've changed the MTU on the laptop to 1364 but the test still fails. Anyideas?
Cheers
Hi there, my xbox keeps failing the MTU test, i read why and it says that its something to do with my router settings. However i don't have a router and am using a ICS connection as my modem is USB only. I have already tried the alternative MAC setting on my xbox but still no joy. I would be grateful with any advice you can give. Thanks, Matt

Get DrTCP to change mtu settings on your computer to 1365. Just do a search.
Rudy
Im using a 3 moblie connect dongle my MTU is set to 1450 and xbox live says i have failed the MTU test.
What do i do?
So up until 2 days ago my xbox Live has been working perfectly well for 3 years using my current router (a linkys WRT54G v5) and my current modem, connected through Vigin Media broadband
2 Days ago my xbox started to refuse to connect to xbox live - saying my MTU value was too low
So i did all the stuff xbox suggested, set a manual MTU value above 1364 etc ect and it still failed, turned the modem and router on and off etc
I then proceded to connect it directly to my modem where it got another MTU failure saying it is too low
therefore I am a bit stuck on what to do as xbox provides no more solutions so any help would be appreciated
I'm using someone elses wireless, and its been working fine up until yesterday when all the BS starting to happen with Xbox live and what not. I'm using my laptop to give my xbox internet, but like i said, worked just fine up until yesterday. Now I need more mtu??
