How to share your internet connection on your PC with your Xbox 360 Console

Internet connection Sharing (ICS) is an option on your PC that allows you to share your Internet connection with other devices, and to do so follow these steps:

1. Go on PC to “Start”
2. Then “Control Panel”

3. Go to “Network Connections”
4. You’ll find 2 main categories “Dial up” & “LAN or High–speed Internet”.

5. If you have more than one "Local Area Network" you must first know which of them is the connection to your Xbox 360 console, so unplug the cable that connects the PC to the console from the back of the PC and look which of them on the screen will turn to be unplugged, so that's the connection to the console, now reconnect the cable.
6. Under “Dial up” you’ll find your broadband connection, so right click on it & go to properties.
7. Then click on the advanced tab, you’ll find there the ICS option, all what you need to do is to enable the check box “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection” and only this check box, then if you have more than one "Local Area Network" you'll get a list of them here to select the one that you want to share your broadband connection with, for sure select the Xbox 360 connection.
8. Then click “OK”.
9. This new settings may not apply unless you disconnect & reconnect again from the Internet.

If you faced any other kind of troubles with this part even after you try these steps please don't hesitate to leave a comment.

OK, Let’s do everything again from the very beginning.
On your computer go to Start then Control Panel then Network Connections.
You’ll find two main categories:
1-Dial up
2-LAN or High–speed Internet
Under Dial up you’ll find your Broadband Connection. Right click on it and select Properties then click on the Advanced tab. You’ll find an Internet Connection Sharing option. I need you to unmark the box beside “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection” then click “OK”. Then disconnect and reconnect again to the internet. We are doing so because you might be allowing ICS to the wrong Local Area Network. Then we’ll allow ICS again.

On the Xbox 360 dashboard go to System then Network Settings then Restore to factory defaults. Then Apply Settings and Test Xbox Live Connection.

On the PC:
1-Go on PC to Start
2-Then Control Panel
3-Go to Network Connections
4-You’ll find 2 main categories “Dial up” & “LAN or High–speed Internet”.
5-If you have more than one "Local Area Network" you must first know which of them is the connection to your Xbox 360 console, so unplug the cable that connects the PC to the console from the back of the PC and look which of them on the screen will turn to be unplugged (You’ll find a red X when you disconnect the Ethernet cable and it will disappear when you reconnect it again), so that's the connection to the console, then reconnect the cable.
Ensure your chosen Local Area Connection is Enabled if it is Disabled, right click on the Local Area Connection and choose Enable.
6-Under “Dial up” you’ll find your broadband connection, so right click on it & go to Properties.
7-Then click on the Advanced tab, you’ll find there the Internet Connection Sharing option, all what you need to do is to tick the check box “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection”, then if you have more than one "Local Area Network" you'll get a list of them here to select the one that you want to share your broadband connection with, for sure select the Xbox 360 connection. (The one you found the Red X on when you disconnected the Ethernet cable)
8-And tick “Establish a dial-up connection whenever a computer on my network attempts to access the Internet”
9- Also tick “Allow other network users to control or disable the shared Internet connection”
10-Then click OK.
11-To apply these settings you’ll need to disconnect from the internet and reconnect again.
When you reconnect again the Dial-up connection should say Connected, Shared.
12-Now select the network connection linked to your Xbox 360, right click on it and select properties.
13- Scroll down the list to the bottom and double click on Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) to bring up its properties.
14- Click ok if you find “ Use the following IP address” selected.
IP: 192.168.0.1
15- Now make sure the Ethernet cable is connected from the Xbox 360 to the PC. And turn on the Xbox360.
16- On the Xbox 360 dashboard go to System then Network settings. Click on the IP settings and switch it to manual and enter the following:

IP: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1

It will ask you to apply settings and test Xbox Live connection.
When you test the connection it’ll pass. But if the DNS fails go back to the DNS settings, switch it to manual and enter this DNS: 192.168.0.1

NOTE: You need to ensure that there is no PPPOE settings set. Go on the System then Network settings then Edit settings then additional settings then click on the PPPOE and select clear settings.

Hey, I just got an Xbox 360 and I'm having a similar problem.

The MTU test fails even when I get it changed to the right number. But I'm also not using a router, instead I have a direct connection to the wall (on-campus at a college). Could that be the problem?

I tried following these steps to share my connection but it doesn't have the option. Usually it would be beneath the Windows Firewall tab, but there's nothing there.

Is there anyone I can bring it up and then set the connection to be shared? Because that could be the problem.

Thanks

Hello there,

Sorry for the delayed respond, I was in a vacation for a week.
Basically about your issue here I don't know first whether you've set the MTU to the correct # or not so plz check our page on that issue first:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/mtu-failed-on-xbox-live-test.html

But as MTU is a router setting & you say you even don't have a router & connecting through a direct connection at college I think you might need to ask the IT department or I mean the person in charge of the Internet connection (administrator) at your college to set it for you.

If it's set correctly you should be able to directly connect your console & play normally, but if you have to share the connection through a PC & you can't find that option following the steps on our blog you have an OEM Windows version & it doesn't support ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) so you have to contact Microsoft Windows support to update your windows version or even to change it.

Wish that would be helpful even it might be too late.
see you.

Somewhat similar problem here... just hooked up Xbox Live with direct connect to modem, which worked no problem. However, this was after several attempts to use the ICS through my PC. I have two ethernet ports on my motherboard, allowing my modem to connect to my PC, and my Xbox to connect to my PC. Unfortunately the MTU test failed and I don't have any router settings to manipulate. Any way around this?

Thanks

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi there,

If the MTU is the failing part and in your case you are just connecting the console to the PC (NO Router) just modem, PC and Xbox 360, i need you to turn it all off including the actual modem.

Unplug the modem from the wall socket , turn console and PC off, wait for a couple of minuets then turn it on again, turn the PC on first then the console the modem.

supposed to work this way,if not please send me again with the brand of your modem with the model number which will be found on the back of the modem, also tell me which internet service provider are you with now.

bye now.

HI I am trying to set up the internet connection sharing but when I hook the PC up to the 360 and go to network connections, there is no connection showing for the 360, can you help me out?

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi there,

If you connect your Xbox 360 to your PC using a working Ethernet cable you must find a connection on the Network Connections part.

So first we'll assume that this cable is a working, good conditioned cable and I'll ask you to go back on the Network Connections page on you PC as shown on this page from step 1 - 3.

Then unplug the cable connecting to your Xbox 360 from the back of your PC, supposed now one of the connections on your screen will show an unplugged icon with a red X on it, so this will be your console connection to the PC, and now you can go on with the steps on the page here.

If nothing changed on the screen when you unplug the cable from the PC side, there is a problem with this particular cable, so then buy a new Ethernet cable and try it please, I believe then it must work unless you have a problem with the Ethernet port on your PC or the Xbox 360 Ethernet port is faulty.

Just try another cable first, and please feed me back.

Bye now.

Please help - ive been tearing my hair out over this :(

I have the same DNS problem as the first guy, and have done everything, but it still hasnt been resolved :(

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi there,

The first guy wasn't able to allow the ICS option on his PC, not having a DNS problem but if you have the same error I'll tell you what to do.

There is a small IP conflict on your PC that needs to be resolved, first I need you to go to follow the steps on this page till step No.6

Instead of going to the "Advanced tap" keep on the General one and you'll find there a subtitle "this connection uses the following items" under this subtitle there are some options one of them is "Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)" double click on this one.

another new page will pop up including a "General" and "Alternate Configuration" set all the options here to automatic.

On General "Obtain an IP address automatically" , "Obtain DNS server address automatically" , On Alternate Configuration "Automatic private IP address".

It's even better and in your case I think it's a must to set all your connections this way, I mean even the "Local Area Connection 1" or the Broadband connection so all would be on the same configuration with no hassle at all.

Then Restart your PC and check,
If still not working let me tell you something try to disable the ICS by unticking the "Allow others to connect...." box, then restart your PC and modem by unplugging the modem power cable (if it has one) then refollow the ICS instructions and allow it again through this page.
Hopefully this will work, please feed me back after all.

Cheers.

Hi there,

Sorry but I didn't get you straight. Any way if you are asking about the way to get the subnet mask and gateway from the computer go to this link and you'll find the answer to your question:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/how-to-get-physical-ip-dns-addresses-or.html

But if you just want to know how to enter them on the Xbox 360 dashboard here is how to do it:
After you enter the IP manually click done and you'll get the subnet mask click on it and enter the one you got from the computer then done and for the gateway it's the same.
Hope this helps.

If you want to ask about anything else please don't hesitate to leave another comment but try to give me more details n order to better assist you.

Dear Paul,

You have done pretty well till now but i don't know now whether you've set the IP settings on your Xbox 360 on manual or automatic, but it's better to set it to automatic.

But first go on the steps on this page to make sure even your PC is configured automatically:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/10/ip-failes-xbox-360-live-test.html

Then go on your dashboard to "System" then "Network Settings" then "Restore to Factory Defaults" and when it ask you to apply settings "Test Xbox Live" should be your choice.

Hopefully it would work that simple if not please feed me back.
Cheers.

Hi,

I'm trying to set up my xbox 360 live account using ICS. I followed all the steps and I still get a DNS failed. Under the windows TCP/IP properties under the genral tab I use the following IP address:
Ip Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: . . .

Use the following DNS:
left both blank.

Under Internet connection sharing tab in advanced I clicked Allow other user to connect and allow other users to control.

Under the Xbox 360 basic settings i have the following:

Ip settings: manual
IP address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1

DNS settings: Manual
Primary: 192.168.0.1
Secondary: 192.168.0.1

PPPoE settings : Not set

My DNS test still fails but my IP address test is confirmed. Am I doing something wrong? I redid all the settings according to your instruction like 5 times to no avail. Any help is greatly appreciated and thanks for devoting your time to this cause.

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi David,

You've already done a great job and seems to me you have also devoted alot of your time to try lol.

Anyways I want to tell you something, it's always better to leave the whole thing to the beauty of technology as I call which is to set it all on automatic and all staff will configure itself by itself.

So first I want you to go on the steps on this page to set the settings on your PC to automatic then restart your PC connection:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/10/ip-failes-xbox-360-live-test.html

Then as I said on this page at the end:
Restart your PC and go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then “Restore To Factory Defaults", when it ask you to apply settings select "Test Xbox Live".

I believe then all will work with technology magical "auto" option.
Please feed me back with what you got to.
Cheers.

hi all.

After 7 hours of tinkering, troubleshooting, cussing, throwing things, I finally got my connection to work. Just wanted to throw a little advice out there to save you all some trouble (and 7 hours).

Listen to what the xbox 360 help blogger has to say! Seriously! Read each step carefully and as he stated before, the "auto" function works wonders, no need to tinker around with manual. The xbox 360 is an amazing machine let it do its own work.

The step I missed was I enabled sharing on the wrong LAN. MAKE SURE you're sharing the one that your computer actually recieves internet from, NOT the one its connecting to the xbox through.

Hope this helps and if you still have trouble, I have no doubt the help blogger will be able to assist you. Thanks to the xbox 360 Support blogger for all the help! Good luck to you all! Time for some CODD4:MW!

Hello,
I found your this article and read through it because my xbox 360 continues to fail the IP test. I have it set up so that my xbox connects directly into my pc which receives its connection wirelessly. this worked for months before i started having internet connection issues. these issues were resolved but i havent been able to get on LIVE now for weeks! I have tried power cycling my modem, turning off and on both my pc and xbox, using auto and manual IP info, and restoring my factory defaults all to no avail. I really need help figuring this one out and would appreciate some input. Thanks

Hello RomeDogg,

All what you've said is great but even if you've tried all possible steps ever it might still fail because you haven't tried these steps with the correct order.

I've put all steps to try related to the ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) issues on 2 pages, please follow the steps on each as it is and read it carefully for you issue to get resolved.

First go on the steps on this page that we're on once more.

Then go on the steps on this link afterwards:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/10/ip-failes-xbox-360-live-test.html

It should work then, but if it didn't please send me back and tell me exactly which part fail when you test Xbox Live Connection.
Cheers.

I tried following the steps on this page but I am unable to on a few of them. Under Network Connections I only have a LAN or Highspeed Internet area and no dial-up area, meaning i cannot do the ICS option on my 'broadband' connection. When I unplug the ethernet cable, the icon labeled Local Area connection loses its connection, so I tried checking the ICS box on that one. When I do this i lose my interent connection and I have to go back and check the ICS box on my Wireless Network Connection to regain internet access. What does this mean? Thank you for the help by the way I really appreciate it

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi RomeDogg,

Basically, as far as I know there are 2 reasons for not finding the broadband connection or the Dial-up part.

1. If you already got this device connection shared from another device (for example if you have a laptop and shared its connection to a PC you can't share the PC connection to a third device).

2. If you're on a network already had a device sharing its connection as only one device on the same network can share connection with another device (if you have your laptop and PC connected to the same router and you're sharing the laptop connection with your Xbox 360 you can't share the PC connection with any other device).

If you are on one of these situations I think by now you know the reason, if not please tell me so I can look for any other reason that I may not know till now.

Hey dude. I have tried everything on this site and nothing will work for me. I think it has something to do with network connections. I Have my modem & xbox 360 enabled. Modem has let other users connect to internet enabled. IP address on 360 keeps failing. I have been to the page where it explains why ip could be failing, I have done everything on that page and still no luck. I can use xbox live if i disable my internet on the pc and plug 360 straight into modem but when I want to use internet on pc I have to switch it back and it is very annoying. PlEaSe HeLp !!

Hi Matt,

I don't know what type of security you're using but there are 2 steps here we need to try.

First, you'll need to turn any firewall on your PC off in case the firewall is the reason, I mean just even to check.

If turning the firewalls off doesn't solve the issue, here is the second step to try:
1. Go on the same steps on this page to step no. 6.
2. Supposed as you said you'll find the option “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection” already ticked, we need now to untick it.
3. Go back on your broadband connection and right click on it then select "disconnect".
4. wait for a minute then right click again on your broadband connection and select "Reconnect".
5. again go on the steps on this page to share your connection by ticking the option “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection”.

After that go on your Xbox 360 and test your connection once more.
Cheers.

Hey, great write up you have here. Really some good info for people having troubles... but for some reason I cannot get my system working..

My Specs:
Laptop running Windows Vista
Laptop internet source = wireless
Xbox 360 (of course)
Crossover cable

Ok... so the reason I am doing this is quite simple... I have the xbox in a room too far from the router and don't want to shell out another good chunk of money for a wireless adapter that should have been pre-built into the system in my opinion.

I actually had LIVE working on 2 occasions but whenever I rebooted the computer next.... didn't work... it was hit or miss...

So I followed your steps... set the wireless to share... I have the wireless connection to automatically detect IP and DNS and all that mumbo jumbo..

As for the LAN connection.. I set the ip to 192.168.0.2 and gateway to 255.255.255.0 and the DNS left blank... I have it setup on manual on the 360 to

IP: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1

the DNS I kept automatic... I tested the connection.. IP confirmed but the DNS failed... so I did what you said and set the DNS settings on the xbox to manual and set it to 192.168.0.1 and still didn't work...

so basically I am stuck right here... any help would definately be really appreciated.. thank you

Hi LyRySyST,

Well it should work somehow, let me try something here with you.

5. Again go on the steps on this page to share your connection by ticking the option “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection”, and make sure that this is the only enabled option.

Then go on the steps on this page:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/10/ip-failes-xbox-360-live-test.html

Then on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then “Restore To Factory Defaults", when it ask you to apply settings select "Test Xbox Live", and I reckon it will be working then.

Please feed me back, Cheeers.

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi Peter,

Seems you've tried alot dude :-) ok hope fully this time it will work.

Sometimes it's likely to use the automatic option and see the beauty of modern technology, and I'll tell you how to do so, so here goes..

First make sure that all connection on your laptop under "Network Connections"are set to automatic as we said on this page:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/10/ip-failes-xbox-360-live-test.html

Then do these steps here:
5. Again go on the steps on this page to share your connection by ticking the option “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection”, and make sure that this is the only enabled option.

As for me I see the problem here is that you haven't specify the DNS on your laptop.

And our final step after all is to go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then “Restore To Factory Defaults", when it ask you to apply settings select "Test Xbox Live".

Please feed me back after trying these steps.
Cheers.

Dear Helper man,
so tell me if I am challenging myself to a losing battle. but I live way out in the country and the only source for internet is dial-up. Ive been reading online and I get some mixed messages, many saying its possible, but obviously with lagg. In any case, if it does work, I am having a failed DNS error. When I go to my internet connection to right click for the properties, nothing happens. the page doesn't pop up or anything. I can on any other computer but is there something I need to enable to pull up the properties page for my internet?

Anonymous said...

Hey Guys I need some help!!! haha.

Ok, well heres how it is i go to network connections and i see two options the ethernet or my actual internet connection so i right click go to properties and then advanced like you say, BUT it only show the Windows firewall NOT the ICP or sharing so what do i need to do?

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi Jimmy,

First about connecting using dial up, definitely it will be with lagging and that stuff.

I donno what is exactly the reason that you can't get the properties part on your dial up connection it supposed to work normally, anyway that would be a windows problem and it's better in a case like this to setup your windows again and try so it will be for sure working although I don't reckon it's a good idea going live using a dial up unless you have no other options.
Cheeers.

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi Shano,

Well in this case you are using a windows version called OEM which doesn't allow ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) so you need now to contact Microsoft customer support to ask whether it's possible to update this windows somehow to allow ICS or not.

Or even if you already have another windows copy at home you can just set this one up.
Cheeers.

Anonymous said...

Hi umm i have vista so i cant follow exactly what you said, do you know how i can do it with vista?

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi anthony,

To set-up ICS on Vista follow these steps:-

1) Ensure you are connected to the Internet

2) Ensure your Xbox is powered up and connected to your chosen network card

3) Start/Network

4) Click on the Network and Sharing Center Button

5) Click Manage Network Connections

Here you must identify which of the connections listed is your connection to the internet.

If you are using a USB modem to connect to the Internet it will be listed in the "Dial-up" section its very important that you make sure you get the correct one otherwise this wont work.

6) Identify your LAN Connection to the Xbox
If you have more than one network card, it will be the one that doesn't say "Network Cable Unplugged", as your Xbox should be powered up and the cable connected, unplugged means there is nothing connected to that network card.

Ignore the 1394 connection and if your set-up is simple there should only be one left. The network card normally has a manufacturers description to help you. Again this is very important that you identify the correct card.

It should be labelled as Local Area Connection followed by a number
Ensure your chosen Local Area Connection is Enabled if it is Disabled, right click on the Local Area Connection and choose Enable.

7) Left click once on your Dial-up Network Connection to highlight it, the one you use to connect to the Internet NOT Local Area Conection

8) Right click the mouse, and select properties, followed by continue

9) Click on the Sharing tab at the top
10) Tick the "Allow other network users to connect through this computers Internet connection"

11) On the "Home Networking Connection" drop down box select the Network card that is connected to your Xbox from the list.
Remember it will be listed as Local Area Connection followed by a number if you have a few network cards.

You wont need to choose at all if you only have one network card

Remember this option will only appear if you have more than one Local Area Connection. So do not worry if this setting is not present.

12) Tick Establish a dial-up connection whenever a computer on my network attempts to access the Internet
13) Click on OK and wait (you may get a warning stating that as your connection is active use settings may not be applied right now, ignore it)

14) Disconnect from the Internet
15) Connect to the Internet again

Note that the Dial-up connection should say Connected, Shared.
16) Now left click the mouse on the network connection that links to your Xbox. Highlight it and right click and select Status/Details. Look for the field that says IPv4 IP Address, it should read 192.168.0.1 If it doesn't, you have done something wrong, start the guide again.
17) Scroll down the list to the bottom and double click on Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) to bring up its properties
18) On your Xbox Dashboard, go into Settings/Network Settings, ensure the settings are set to Auto
19) When the details have been entered. Press Back on the controller. Now select Connect and you should be able to connect to Xbox Live

Hope tis helps,

Hi Jb,

Lets start eveything from the very begining to make it clear for you.
1. I need you first to disable the ICS option on your PC, use this link but instead of checking the box remove that check mark:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/ics-internet-connection-xbox-live.html

2. Then turn off the whole thing (PC, Modem, Xbox 360) by turning off the modem I need you to unplug it from the wall socket even if you have a power button, wait for a couple of minutes afterwards turn the PC on first then the modem first and go again on the same steps on the last link to check the box once more to allow the ICS, then turn on your Xbox 360.

Hopefully this will work if not, I'll tell you what to do, go on the same steps on the past link till step No. 6.

It's even better to set all your connections this way, I mean even the "Local Area Connection 1" or the Broadband connection so all would be on the same configuration with no hassle at all.

Then Restart your PC and check, if it's still not working repeat the steps "1,2" on this comment please and feed me back.

I hope that was clear :)
Cheers,

Hi there,
when i try and enable the sharing in my internet connection, it comes up with an error saying "An Error occured while Internet connection sharing was being enabled" , i use vista, and am trying to route my internet connection through my netgear router --> to my laptop then through ethernet --> to my Xbox 360 please help! thanks in advance

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi there,

When you check the box “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection” some services are needed to start or to run on your PC or laptop and when any or some of these services will not start properly you'll get the error message "An error occurred while Internet Connection Sharing was being enabled. The dependency service or group failed to start", and to solve this issue you'll need to start this service.

First make sure that the ICS option is unchecked, then click Start, then Run, and type services.msc, and click OK.
To enable a service, find it in the right pane and double-click its entry. Be sure its Startup Type is set to Automatic and click OK. All the following services must be configured in order to use ICS:

Application Layer Gateway Service
Network Connections
Network Location Awareness (NLA)
Plug And Play
Remote Access Auto Connection Manager
Remote Access Connection Manager
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Telephony

After configuring automatic startup for each of these services, close the Services window and restart the computer before attempting again to enable ICS.
Hopefully that will work, also please feed me back with the result.
Cheeers.

Hi

First off thanks for this site and all the help you are giving to people.

Could you please let me know if the following is possible.

I have a broadband connection (USB Modem) on one PC (XP) which is shared wirelessly with two other PC's using ICS - This works fine.

I want to connect an XBOX 360 to the internet using an XBOX 360 wireless adapter. I have installed the adapter into the XBOX 360, connected the XBOX 360 to my wireless connection using the SSID and the XBOX 360 says it is connected and there is a green light on the adapter. But I cannot get into XBOX live and all the tests fail on IP address.

I have tried manual IP settings and automatic IP settings but it still fails on the same test.

Any help would be most appreciated!

Kind Regards

Dave.

Hey, I just finished setting up my computer with a d- link wireless router on my computer. My modem and my wireless router ( netgear ) is downstairs. I have a full signal upstairs ( my wireless computer not labtop) I have the ethernet cable and i connected the cable from the back of my computer ( wireless ) to the back of my 360 console. I was reading on various websites that you have to bridge 2 connections but when i try to do that i get an error saying To create a bridge connection select at least two network connections that are not being used by internet connection sharing. I have verizon DSL and I dont have a Local area connection that isnt on with the red X that they say on the websites it should have. My Local and wireless are both enabled and firewalled. Im kinda stressed out. I know my ethernet cable is good because xbox recognizes it. When it comes to the ip test it fails. I have read all of your step things but I think i need to bridge a connection which im not sure i can =[ Please help! Thanks! =]] I appriciate your time and consideration! =]

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi macbook guy,

Here's what you need to do to connect your Xbox 360 using your MACbook:

1- Take the ethernet cable and connect it to the back of your Xbox and your Mac.
2- Turn on the Mac and the Xbox.
3- When your Xbox is on, go to the Xbox dashboard.
4- On your Mac, go to the System Preferences and click on “Network.”
From the “Show” menu, select “Built-in Ethernet” and set “Configure IPv4″ to “Off.”
Now go back to System Preferences (click “Show All”) and then go to “Sharing.”

Click on the “Internet” button and check the box next to “Built-in Ethernet.”
Make sure “Share your connection from: Airport” is selected as well.

Open Terminal (if you can’t find it, just type “Terminal” in Spotlight) and type in the following exactly: ifconfig en0. Press enter, and it should return something like inet 192.168.2.1 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.2.255.
If the first IP is something other than 192.168.2.1 make note of it, and don’t close Terminal.

5- Now, on your Xbox 360. Go to the Network settings, and set the IP Configuration to Manual, the IP to 192.168.2.2, the Subnet Mask to 255.255.255.0, and the router/gateway to 192.168.2.1 (the IP that I told you to make note of earlier — if yours is different, input that IP instead and change the IP Address settings on the Xbox to reflect the different address you wrote down, i.e 192.168.10.X)

6- Get back on your Mac, go to Terminal, and type in dig and press enter. There will be a lot of data, but you need to pay attention to only one line. Near the end of the output, a line will begin with SERVER. That’s the line you need to look at. Find the IP address in that line, and highlight it.

7- Go to the Xbox and go to DNS Settings. Set it to Manual, and input the IP that you just found in Terminal as the primary DNS server. Set your PPPoE settings to Off and your Advanced to Automatic.

8- Test your Xbox Live connection. I believe it'll be connected now.

Cheers,

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi there,

Here are more detailed steps. Try them. I hpe it works for you.
So let’s do everything again from the very beginning.

Cheers,

Appreciate all the advice you've given here. I think I have tried everything twice but with no luck--even xbox tech support is referring me to MS techs. Here's the issue.
-Etherneting xbox to nearby computer
-Computer online through Netgear wireless modem/router combo (previously wired into this device to get to xbox live)
-Attempted to follow the ICS setup steps you've laid out but got the error after step 10 saying ICS can not be enabled due to ip address conflict....
-Manually set my xbox LAN connection to 192.168.0.1 and my xbox itself to 192.168.02, 255.255.255.255.0, 192.168.0.1. My computer sees my xbox (can even see in Media Player media sharing), but xbox cant connect to media or live. I assume because I cant click share on my host computer's wireless connection because I get the error.
-At this point the ICS option no longer appears under the advanced tab and I have an internet gateway icon in Network connections, along with my xbox LAN and Wireless Network icons. All icons say connected, but my host computer wireless network does NOT say shared. This makes it seem like ICS is halfway established????

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, I follow the above At the network connection stage my page shows INTERNET GATEWAY with internet connection under it and LAN OR HI SPEED INTERNET shows3 local area connections, ie an nvidia network connection, and 1394 connection 1 and 1394 connection 2. Only the last two of these, the 1394 connections have the "allow other users..." checkbox however when I check it I can no longer connect to the internet. I'd be really grateful of any help.

Hello,

Is there any other reason why my DNS would fail. I had this setup working flawlessly for well over 9 months but I must of over looked something because now I can't get past the dns.

Lan Settings:
192.168.0.1
Sub:255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1

360 Settings:
192.168.0.2
255.255.255.0
192.168.0.1

Prim Dns: 192.168.0.1

There are no PPOE settings set.

After weeks of on/off effort with some progress, I am back here for more advice. I am running XP and linked to the net through a wireless modem. I have an ICS between my computer and 360. Problem is that when I configure the xbox LAN to auto IP, it fails the IP test and when I set a static IP I lose the internet (gateway icon disappears from the Network Connections). Any ideas?
thanks,
Greg

Anonymous said...

Greg here again. To add to my last post, current settings are:

Wireless Network Connection
192.168.0.2
255.255.255.0
192.168.0.1

360 LAN
192.168.0.8
255.255.255.0
192.168.0.1

360 Console
192.168.0.9
255.255.255.0
192.168.0.1

If I enable the 360 LAN, computer-360 works but internet drops out. As soon as disabled, internet comes up. Any ideas? Thanks much.

I am using Windows ICS to connect to xbox live and when I run the network test on the xbox it shows everything as working and I can connect to live. However, when I try to join a game a couple of minutes into it a message pops up that says my connection has failed. What is causing that? I am using a lynksys wireless router.

I am having trouble connecting with my IP address and DHCP, and I followed your instructions to change the ICS. ok i go to start, then i go to control panel, then network connections, but then the only thing i see is two categories, "incoming connections" and "LAN or High Speed Internet" i don't see any dial up option to click on, so what do i do?

hi there,

MASSIVE PROBLEMS WITH THIS

i linked a netgear router with a BT Voyager 105 by simply using an ethernet cable from the router to the pc. (only way i could get the internet and router to work) because Local Area Connection was showing to be working and an "Internet Connection" popped up. but upon looking an sent and recieved data. it said not available.

so i tried to get xbox live to work and it failed on DNS. so i accuqired DNS details from the run menu you indicated and manually entered the details on the dashboard. how ever after many attempts and changing i.p adress' it still seems to fail on either i.p or DNS

so i thought i would try to connect by forgetting the router, plug the xbox ethernet cable into an empty ethernet port (seen as though my modem is usb based) and use ICS with the the Voyager modem. however when i plug my voyager modem in, nothing at all comes up on my screen, not even a dial up empty menu. only the Local Area Connection saying "little or no connection". yet the internet still works but xbox live test doesnt even pass i.p adress. so im overly confused as to how the internet can work but not appear in the network connections or provide a valid i.p/DNS for my xbox

im starting to think upgrading to a BT Voyager 210 would be easier when installed ?

my ISP is BT by the way if that is any help.

would appreciate as much as help as possible

thanks

First off, I would like to say that what you're doing with this page is great. It seems like you're providing better (and more convenient) help than tech support does..Anyway, I noticed a lot of people posting about DNS and IP address failure when testing the connections. Both of those work fine for me, but I get a failure notice when it moves to the XBox Live connection. I tried ICS and some of the things mentioned previously, but to no avail. Please help?

This is such an easy tutorial to follow. Thanks for this. But if this doesn't work for you, there's still one alternative you can do. You can make use of Netgear's Xbox 360 Internet Connection Kit. This wonderful device acts the same way as the WiFi adapter giving wireless internet connectivity for your Xbox 360, and it also works for your PS2, PS3, and PC gaming. Check this link out: http://bit.ly/bByST7, for more information about this wonderful product from Netgear.
