What to do if you are sharing your connection from your PC to the Xbox 360 and you got a limited or no connectivity sign on your Local Area Connection???
There is a small IP conflict on your PC that needs to be resolved,
1. Go on PC to “Start”
2. Then “Control Panel”3. Go to “Network Connections”
4. You’ll find 2 main categories “Dial up” & “LAN or High–speed Internet”.
5. If you have more than one "Local Area Network" you must first know which of them is the connection to your Xbox 360 console, so unplug the cable that connects the PC to the console from the back of the PC and look which of them on the screen will turn to be unplugged, so that's the connection to the console, then reconnect the cable.
6. Under “Dial up” you’ll find your broadband connection, so right click on it & go to properties.
On the General tap you'll find a subtitle "this connection uses the following items" under this subtitle there are some options one of them is "Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)" double click on this one.Another new page will pop up including a "General" and "Alternate Configuration" set all the options here to automatic.
On General "Obtain an IP address automatically" , "Obtain DNS server address automatically" , On Alternate Configuration "Automatic private IP address".
You must now set all your connections this way, I mean even the "Local Area Connection" or the Broadband connection so all would be on the same configuration with no hassle at all.
Then Restart your PC and go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then “Restore To Factory Defaults", when it ask you to apply settings select "Test Xbox Live".
Hopefully this will work, please feed me back after all.

hi, i was trying to connect my xbox to pc manually before reading your posts using:
ip- 192.168.0.2
subnet-255.255.255.0
gateway-192.168.0.1
DNS-192.168.0.1
this all was working except the DNS. i then tryed your steps and got failed IP address.
I have my computer connected to bigpond wireless interent and the computer is connected to the xbox 360 via earthenet. This has worked for me before and all of a sudden it stopped working.
im a noob at the whole internet lingo eg.. DNS? if you can give me something for DNS i think it may work.
would much appriciate the help..

Hi teish,
Ok, Go to this link on the blog. It's for DNS issue, it'll help you with the DNS failure:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/dns-failed-on-xbox-360-live-test.html
Cheers now,
hey i was wondering if i could get some help. I did all of your instructions setting it to automatic ip and all but it still gives me the message that it is limited or no connectivity because it cant get an IP address on my computer. Please help.
Also whenever i let one of my LAN connections to be shared, my wireless on my computer doesn't work even though it's connected but when i take shared off it works. email is snakewrglr00@hotmail.com
Hi there,
It seems to be something wrong with the ICS steps done.
So disable the ICS and then try the steps on this link:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/04/ip-failed-xbox-360-live-test.html
You might need to set the IP manually.
Cheers now,
hey ive just recently tried what you told me to do, and i am no longer getting the ip conflict but the ip test still fails, and ive looked through the ip failed stuff and nothing is helping, so what should i do
Hi there
Wow.. I just seem to be going backwards here and i'm starting to pull my hair out as i've been working on this now for six hours straight.
running Windows XP
Network cable from 360 to pc, Speedtouch ADSL USB modem connected
Tiscali broadband, Icon says 'connected shared' (but only after i uncheck and then recheck the sharing boxout.
DNS, I.P and subnet set to automatically obtain
LAC, DHCP enabled, DNS, I.P and subnet set to automatically obtain
First problem was DNS failure on the test, and as i've hunted through these helpful blog entires my situation has only worsened (although my knowledge of where and how to locate the more interesting apsects of XP networking has certainly improved). After following through on a few of the tech entries i've progressed(?) to i.p address failure, and now i'm getting the 'little or no connectivity' indicator from my LAC.
I'm getting GTA 4 tomorrow and would dearly love to get my Live account up and running again, as it hasn't worked since i upgraded most of my machine, and did a clean XP install on a new Hard Drive.
Help me Xbox techies, You're my only hope!
Hi Mark,
If you get this Limited or No connectivity message, this means that while allowing Internet Connection sharing (ICS) you didn't share the internet connection to the correct Network card (the one the Xbox 360 is connected to)
So the computer's network card is trying to get an IP Address from your Xbox 360 but it can't find it.
So here's what you need to do:
1. Go on PC to “Start”
2. Then “Control Panel”
On the General tap you'll find a subtitle "this connection uses the following items" under this subtitle there are some options one of them is "Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)" double click on this one.
Another new page will pop up including a "General" and "Alternate Configuration" set all the options here to automatic.
On General "Obtain an IP address automatically" , "Obtain DNS server address automatically" , On Alternate Configuration "Automatic private IP address".

Then Restart your PC and go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then “Restore To Factory Defaults", when it ask you to apply settings select "Test Xbox Live"
Cheers now,
Hi there...
Mark here again. Thanks for the reply, but unfortunately i'm still having the same 'limited or no connectivity' problem. I followed your instructions to the letter, as i had prior to my post, after sifting through the invaluable help that you had dished out to the similarly affected.
I figured that following through the steps lined out in your response from scratch would be the best way to go about things, so i did, but still no joy.
If you could you advise me on a new way forward, that'd be most appreciated, as my xbox Live squad are gaining multiplayer GTA IV skills by the day, and i've only A.I goons for target practice... I can't afford to slip this far behind em all on the pwnage stakes ;-)
Hi Mark,
I'd recommend that you contact windows support for this ICS issue.
It seems to be something with the windows version you have.
Try that and feed me back if it worked with you.
Good luck :)
I'm in the same boat as mark.. I followed the directions to the letter but still get a limited connection message... whats really weird is everything was working fine for weeks then out of the blue it wouldn't anymore...
Why is this so difficult, this is why I can't stand PCs. I've followed all the instructions and now I've got the limited connection message (XP Home SP2) and can't get rid of it. I have tried everything...different Ip addresses auto config and nothing will not connect. Damn I really wanted to play rez in hd as well thanks a bunch M$
Hi Matt,
You can try to untick the sharing options on your PC first then try it all again, go on the steps on this page:
But this time untick the option: “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection” and restart the PC then go on the sharing steps all again.
Please then feed me back with the results.
Cheeers.
ok i follewed your steps till i got to the internet protocol. when changing the properties everything was already in automatic.
also in the "this connection is using the following items" i have +4 things(don't want to name them, long names). and on my ICS is checked so yeah. i don't know if it affects it or not but yeah.
please email me your answer at Chrisbad726@aol.com
hey guys, im probs the least computer knowledgable guy ever but i read through loadsa these posts n nothin really worked.
so on my casual try everyfin n anything to get it to work, so checked my lan connection which sed tht it was obtaining settings automatically like ip n dns n all that jazz. but when disabling ics and checking the settings they suddenly appeared to be manual so switched them to automatic an it worked. absolubtly bizarre but try disabling the ics before making the settings automatic on the lan n then give it a go. mayb u'll get lucky like i did.
ps. if you think this is not a good idea dont do it, but like i sed i was doing nefink n it just happened to work. good luck.
jguy50@sbcglobal.net. is my email.email your response please because i won't be coming back here. All my things were already automatic. I'm running an xp professional and i keep getting this weird thing when i try to test connection or repair connection. When i try to repair, it says it cant renew the IP address. On my 360, it cant even connect to the computer and cant find find the ip address. I even manually typed everything in.
This worked for me, I disabled the internet sharing on my internet connection then I disabled the LAN then went into properties and the TCP/IP Protocal properties adn unchecked the obtain ip automatically. I put in a bunch of assorted numbers for the ip then hit ok. I then reopended the LAN properties and set everything back to aotomatic, re-enabled the LAN then reenabled the internet connection sharing in my internet connection. Did it in that order and it worked.
this dosent make any sence i hav tried everything in this blog and nothing works......it was working fine 2 months ago and now i get this problem..... has anyone bin able to fix it ?
Generally I do not post on blogs, but I would love to mention that this post extremely forced me to try and do therefore! really nice post. thanks, here's a similar subject you'll like Old Clocks
