DNS Failed on Xbox 360 Live Test

And the reason for this part to fail differs along with the difference of the type of connection you are using as follows:

a. Direct connection to modem:

1. Using a modem you can't connect more than one device so make sure that the only device connected to the modem is the Xbox 360 console.
2. Go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then “Restore To Factory Defaults" and when it ask you to apply settings select "test Xbox Live"

3. Turn the modem off then turn it back on after couple of seconds, then go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then "Test Xbox Live Connection".
4. If it still not working, try to get the DNS addresses (primary & secondary) from your PC as mentioned before and set them manually on the dashboard of your Xbox 360 console, then go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then "Test Xbox Live Connection".

b. Wired or Wireless connection to router:

1. Go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then “Restore To Factory Defaults" and when it ask you to apply settings select "test Xbox Live"
2. Turn the router off then turn it back on after couple of seconds, by that I mean to unplug it from the wall socket then reconnect it back.
3. If you are using a Wireless connection go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to the "system" area then "Network Settings" then "Edit Settings" then select your wireless settings part down there "Wireless Mode, Network Name,..." the console will automatically then search for your wireless network and when it find it and you select it, it will ask you to enter your wireless key which is called WEP or WPA key - you can find it written on your wireless router or then you need to contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider) to get it from them - when it ask you to apply settings select "Test Xbox Live".
If it's a Wired connection Just try once more to "Test Xbox Live Connection"4. If it's still not working, set the DNS (primary & secondary) with the same number of the Gateway on the IP settings, then go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then "Edit Settings" you'll find the gatway on the IP settings put it the same on the Primary & secondary DNS.
5. If it's not working still, then you have to go to your PC and get the DNS Server Address from there as mentioned before, and set it manually on the Dashboard.
6. If it's still not working, you have to contact your ISP or router manufacturer to open or forward the 3 Xbox live ports which are:
  • UDP 88
  • UDP 3074
  • TCP 3074

Or you can check it on www.portforward.com, then go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then "Test Xbox Live Connection".

c. ICS:

1. Go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then “Restore To Factory Defaults".
2. Allow the ICS option on the PC as mentioned before and make sure the the "Local Area Connection" then is showing connected.
3. If it's still not working, turn any firewall on your PC off.
4. If it's still not working, try to get the DNS addresses (primary and secondary) from your PC as mentioned before and set them manually on the dashboard of your Xbox 360 console, then go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then "Test Xbox Live Connection".

If you still facing any issues with this part even after you tried these steps, leave me a comment and I'll get back to you with it's solution within couple of hours.

Hi, that's a pretty informative blog there, but I still can't connect to Xbox Live.

During the Network Settings Test, it confirms everything to Xbox Live, but then it goes to download an update, which it fails to do saying "Test your network settings or visit xbox.com/support".

I tried opening the NAT port thing but that doesn't work either...

Any advice?

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi there,

Well that basically depends on the brand of the router or modem you are using and the ISP (Internet Service Provider) you're with now.

However, as a general step if you're using a router and you are properly using one, just try to lower the firewall settings on your router settings, to access your router settings go to this page:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/04/how-access-router-settings-on-pc.html

try also deleting the cache memory of your console if the firewall part doesn't work or if you're not using a router :)

To delete cache go to System area then Memory then click on device options you'll get here two options, whether to delete or rename don't choose any just enter this code :
X, X, Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X, X

After you finish entering the code you'll get a prompt screen asking to confirm deleting the cached data you just click OK.

Hope that would work.

hi,
maybe u have another trick in your sleeve.

I tried the "delete your prfile and recover it" thing. and as a matter of fact it worked... for some time.
It just works for few minutes, and then the connection just disappears again.

I'm trying to connect Xbox to PC and PC to cable modem.

Unknown said...

i forgot to mention that i'm failing in XboxLive. Everything else is confirmed.

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi Sten,

Just to check where is the issue exactly you'll need to connect your Xbox 360 directly to the modem.
So remove the PC connection from the modem and connect the Xbox 360 only.
If Xbox Live worked fine when connected directly to the modem, this means it's something in the PC and you'll need to disable the firewalls on your computer.

Try that and don't hesitate to leave another comment if you have any concerns.

Cheers,

Oh my god.. I feel so dumb at the moment.
I forgot that I had Sygate Personal Firewall. :|
All this time I messeda around with ports and Windows Firewall so I totally forgot Sygate's Firewall. I disabled it and everything works perfect now.

Thank you so much for your help!
Awesome site, keep it alive ;)

Hello Xbox Support.

I recently bought the Xbox 360 console and wish to play on Xbox Live. I test my connection (Windows ICS Connection through USB) and I pass the IP address test, but when it comes to the DNS it fails.

All help greatly appreciated

Hello everyone.

I have a problem where the console finds my ip but when it comes to the DNS it fails the test.

I am using the Windows ICS Connection through a usb modem.

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi Kieren,

I think you should try all the steps on this page first for the ICS connection type.

The most important thing to do is to turn any firewall on your PC OFF, because most of the cases this is the reason, but please try the steps with the same sequence.

Then feed me back with the results ok?

Cheers.

Anonymous said...

Hello again,
I tried you solutions and it still does not work.
Is there anything you can do, or should I get a professional in to help.

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi Kieren,

If you tried all these steps here it should work!!

The only reasons for the DNS to fail in an ICS connection is:

1. You haven't set the ICS connection correctly or have shared the internet connection to the wrong local area connection, check this here:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/ics-internet-connection-xbox-live.html

2. You haven't restored your Xbox network settings to the factory defaults to delete any PPPOE settings saved there.

3. You haven't turn off the firewalls on your PC, some firewalls do not support ICS as the free version of ZoneAlarm.

Let me tell you something try to disable the ICS by unticking the "Allow others to connect...." box, then restart your PC and modem by unplugging the modem power cable (if it has one) then refollow the ICS instructions and allow it again through this page:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/ics-internet-connection-xbox-live.html

if you've done all this correctly and you have all cables connected in the right way and it still won't work i think you might need to get a professional in, and I wish I could come and help but I think we are distance apart.

See you.

Hey there, I would just like to thank you alot for the help. Im sitting infront of my xbox waiting for the Xbox Live Update to finish :D

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi Brant,

I'm sorry Brant I didn't get it!

Are you trying to connect to Live or to share your media so you'd be able of watching it on your TV?

Anyway, whatever the case can you just also tell me what is the exact part failing on the test then??

Waiting for your respond,
Cheers.

Anonymous said...

Hi sorry, I posted in the other thread but only just saw this one.

I get the DNS error when doing this, but I doubt it is my service provider, because they are a major one that millions must access Live on. And I doubt its my firewall, because Kerio supports ICS and I enabled some connection alert that I saw at the time (dunno how to access a log to get it again and post it).

So, the problem I think must be something to do with my PC - the network between PC and Xbox seems to be working fine, but when I do ICS, I dont have any drop-down box like everyone else seems to - despite using XP.

I dont know whats wrong :(

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi there,

First of all it's not necessary to get this drop down box, it's only if you have more than one network card.

I just need you please to try the steps on this page by word specially for the turning firewall off thing because usually that's the reason.

Also make sure that your Local Area Connection is showing connected not limited or no connectivity and please feed me back.

Cheers.

hi there well i pass the ip and network adpter tests but it fails on DNS test ive been trying for hours and still i have no clue :( im using a bt voyager 105 modem and im on AOL 9.0

please help

Anonymous said...

all of a sudden it started working but when it gets to XBOX LIVE i have to download a update but it wont let me how do i work round this??

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi there,

You say that you pass all Xbox Live test and it only stops while downloading the update.
It seems that some ports in your router are not open so all you need to do is to contact your ISP or router manufacturer to open or forward the 3 Xbox live ports which are:
UDP 88
UDP 3074
TCP 3074
Also ask them to lower the firewalls.
I believe this will resolve the issue.

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi Anonymous,

Regarding your DNS failure with AOL and the BT voyager.
It's well known that using BT voyager always results in a DNS failure.
And basically with AOL you'll need to make sure that you entered your AOL username and password.
So go to system section then network settings then edit settings and choose Additional settings. Here you'll enter AOL username and password.

If that didn't work you'll need to connect to Xbox Live using the internet connection sharing.
And let me know if that happened.

Bye now,

Hello, My xbox live has been down for like, 4-5 months and it stopped working when we got a "Sonicwall" i ont know what that is but i think it messed up my DNS server because it fail that part every time. If i could get some help that would be nice, thanks

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi there,

Sonicwall is a firewall or basically you can say it's a total internet security solution, this is the first time to talk to somebody how actually use it and have troubles with his Xbox Live connection.

Any way one of the steps mentioned above is to turn any firewall on your PC off, so please turn "Sonicwall" off first as you said this might be the reason for DNS to fail in Xbox Live test.

Check and tell me how it goes,
Cheers.

I get a Dns server could not be reached. I'm running ICS through a ethernet. I'm on verizion DSl which requires PPPoE. When I try to add my PPoE info, I get IP failure. Without the PPoE I get to DNS, where it gets could not be reached.

Ports are forwared and tried auto and manual settings.

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi Blane,

First I need you to ensure that there is no PPPOE settings set.
Go on the System then Network settings then Edit settings then additional settings then click on the PPPOE and select clear settings.

Now let's do the ICS from the very begining again.

On your computer go to Start then Control Panel then Network Connections.
You’ll find two main categories:
1-Dial up
2-LAN or High–speed Internet
Under Dial up you’ll find your Broadband Connection. Right click on it and select Properties then click on the Advanced tab. You’ll find an Internet Connection Sharing option. I need you to unmark the box beside “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection” then click “OK”. Then disconnect and reconnect again to the internet.

On the Xbox 360 dashboard go to System then Network Settings then Restore to factory defaults. Then Apply Settings and Test Xbox Live Connection.

On the PC:
1-Go on PC to Start
2-Then Control Panel
3-Go to Network Connections
4-You’ll find 2 main categories “Dial up” & “LAN or High–speed Internet”.
5-If you have more than one "Local Area Network" you must first know which of them is the connection to your Xbox 360 console, so unplug the cable that connects the PC to the console from the back of the PC and look which of them on the screen will turn to be unplugged (You’ll find a red X when you disconnect the Ethernet cable and it will disappear when you reconnect it again), so that's the connection to the console, then reconnect the cable.
Ensure your chosen Local Area Connection is Enabled if it is Disabled, right click on the Local Area Connection and choose Enable.
6-Under “Dial up” you’ll find your broadband connection, so right click on it & go to Properties.
7-Then click on the Advanced tab, you’ll find there the Internet Connection Sharing option, all what you need to do is to tick the check box “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection”, then if you have more than one "Local Area Network" you'll get a list of them here to select the one that you want to share your broadband connection with, for sure select the Xbox 360 connection. (The one you found the Red X on when you disconnected the Ethernet cable)
8-And tick “Establish a dial-up connection whenever a computer on my network attempts to access the Internet”
9- Also tick “Allow other network users to control or disable the shared Internet connection”
10-Then click OK.
11-To apply these settings you’ll need to disconnect from the internet and reconnect again.
When you reconnect again the Dial-up connection should say Connected, Shared.
12-Now select the network connection linked to your Xbox 360, right click on it and select properties.
13- Scroll down the list to the bottom and double click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to bring up its properties.
14- Click ok if you find “Use the following IP address” selected.
IP: 192.168.0.1
15- Now make sure the Ethernet cable is connected from the Xbox 360 to the PC. And turn on the Xbox360.
16- On the Xbox 360 dashboard go to System then Network settings. Click on the IP settings and switch it to manual and enter the following:

IP: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1

It will ask you to apply settings and test Xbox Live connection.
When you test the connection it’ll pass. But if the DNS fails go back to the DNS settings, switch it to manual and enter this DNS: 192.168.0.1

I hope this helps you with the connection issue.

Cheers now,

Anonymous said...

"8-And tick “Establish a dial-up connection whenever a computer on my network attempts to access the Internet”"

I also didn't see this option listed to tick if that effects anything.

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi Blane,

All what you need to do is to enable the check box “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection”
If you didn't find this option you are using an OEM windows version that doesn't support ICS, then contact Windows support.

If you find this option just tick it and skip steps 8 and 9.

Cheers.

Hi Chris,

Well first of all, I want to know how do you wanna connect your Xbox, I mean which is the best way for you is it through your laptop or directly to your router.

Anyway to connect through your laptop you'll need to go on some steps I've listed on these pages:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/ics-internet-connection-xbox-live.html
then:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/10/ip-failes-xbox-360-live-test.html

Then hopefully it will be all working.

Thanks, I'll go try that

If it helps i'm trying to get my connection by wiring my 360 to my laptop and using my laptop to get the internet

Cheers

I tried out the first link and when i try to tick "allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection" it says it can't because my lan is already configured with the IP address thats required for automatic IP addressing

then i took a look at #2 and i originally had my settings like that so that isn't a problem

Also, it only passes the DNS test if i unckeck the TCP/IP box under my wireless network connection settings, but then it blows the internet

Also i don't think i have a broadband connection. When i bring up my network connections it has (under internet gateway) Internet connection and then (under Lan or High speed internet) Local area connection (which has limited or no connectivity) and wireless network connection

If this information changes anything then that'd be great (lol)

Thanks for your help
Chris

Hello, I was running ICS without any problems until this afternoon. I was removing cable clutter and in the process unplugged my wireless adapter(D-Link WUA-1340) from my computer (Vista). Since then I have had a 'Local Only' connection to my 360.

My DNS Fails, currently it is set to the DNS that is provided to my with my static IP. (I connect through University Internet)
I have tried setting it to 192.168.0.1 and it still fails.
Help would be appreciated.
I may be overlooking something small.

Thanks,
Dave

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi Chris,

As I can see here your problem is that your Local Are Connection which is the connection between your Xbox 360 and your laptop is showing "Limited or no Connectivity", so I want you please to repeat the steps on the second link on both your "Local Area Connection" and your "Internet Connection".

That means as we said before that both of them will be set to automatic so it will configure all on it's own, after that and the important completion step is to right click on your "Internet Connection" and select "Disconnect" then wait for a minute and right click again and "Reconnect".

The link is:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/10/ip-failes-xbox-360-live-test.html
This will for sure resolve your issue then.
Cheers.

Anonymous said...

Chris again (unfortunately)

I tried to follow step 2 and my internet properties only had one tab, which didn't ask me if i wanted to manually add an ip or not.

My other 2 connections (wireless and LAC) were already set to automatic, so i couldn't change anything there

One thing i noticed is last night i tried to disable the internet, and I clicked disable and it didn't disable. When i turned on my laptop in the morning, i could access the internet but my internet was listed as disabled o_O

Also i just thought of the possibility that this won't work because my laptop runs through another computer to get the internet, so its kinda like my 3650 is trying to "piggyback" my laptop which is already piggybacking another computer

Thanks again for your continued support

Chris

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi Chris,

Basically, as you said and if you've said that from the beginning it would have been to easy to know the reason because you can only share a single Internet connection on one computer between other computers on the same local area network.

Means if you have your laptop connection shared from another PC in the first place it's not possible to share the same connection back from your laptop to another device.

Sorry for that but I think the best way you would use will be a "Router" so all your devices will be connected at the same time with no hassle at all.

Hope you all luck,
Cheers.

i just got live and i got the Test to confirm everything up to XboxLive what do i do?

Hello.

I started having problems connecting to XboxLIve this week, and every test claims that my DNS is failing. My 360 is connected to a verizon fios router by wire (and apparently these kinds of routers do NOT let you adjust their firewall settings, because the username and password are something other than what you have suggested [and when I try to type anything in the password area, unknown characters jump in unless I copy and paste a password into the bar])

I have tried every single thing you suggested EXCEPT for contacting my ISP or router manufacturer about the ports/firewall settings. Now, I really don't want to try this unless it is absolutely necessary; the thing is, I haven't changed anything at ALL about my PC network/internet settings or about my 360 console. In fact, I haven't even played it in a week. The other funny thing is that I've often had to reboot the router over the past month whenever I could access xbox live, something which didn't happen too frequently before. Is this a degenerative problem? In any case, I've been frustratingly rebooting, disconnecting, and switching everything related to the router for the past three days, and still that DNS test continues to fail.

Could you please help? Thank you so much. -Adrian F.

for everybody that has a laptop or pc connected to a wireless router:

do not share your local area connection, instead share your wireless network connection.

it worked for me
:)

xbox 360 help blog said...

What he said is perfectly right and it's even listed here on this page of our blog:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/ics-internet-connection-xbox-live.html

So what you need always to do when you're using a shared connection with a PC is to share your Broadband connection whether it's wired or wireless but not the Local Area Connection.
You're sharing your broadband connection with the Local Area Connection so both devices on your local connection will get connected through the shared broadband connection.

Hi,

According to the Microsoft support website I'm supposed to configure my DNS and alternate DNS IPs to 192.168.0.1 (I'm using ICS), but Windows (Vista) complains that the DNS and alternate DNS IP addresses have to be different? I simply left the alternate IP address blank, but now what am I supposed to set the secondary DNS address to on the Xbox? If I set the Xbox to automatically configure the DNS it sets the Secondary DNS to 0.0.0.0, and the Xbox Live test fails on the DNS section. What am I supposed to do?

PS: When I try and port forward the ports my router asks me for the "Server IP address". Do I enter the IP address of the computer the xbox is connected to, or the Xbox's IP address?

I just got my 360 and am using some old AirLink internet broadband router with 4 ports and a Motorola comcast surfboard Modem.

I connected the modem to my pc tower with USB then i used a Ethernet cable from the back of the modem to the router. Then used another ethernet cable to my 360.
I get past the other stuff but then fail the DNS. I called alot of ppl and the Live support team and they said my modem wasnt campatible with the 360. I want to play FFXI but i dont know how to access Live. Ive tried connecting it direcly to the modem and the pc. Nothing works for me. If anyone uses the same modem please tell me and how you hooked it up.

I've tried about everything this and the official Xbox site has said. I haven't been able to connect for 2 months. Not sure what happened, my router(Linksys WRT54GS) just stopped working. I forwarded the ports completely shut down my firewall all the addresses for the DNS are correct.

The only problem I can't seem to figure out is why my router won't let me enter it's own IP into both DNS's which is what I think you're supposed to do. I may well have misinterpreted what you said.

Hi Linksys WRT54GS user,

Could you check the above steps again carefully under:
b. Wired or Wireless connection to router
PS: You don't need to enter your own IP into both DNS's. You need to enter the default gateway.
Also you might need an update for your router's firmware, so check this with the Linksys.

Hi Tom,

If you want to connect the Xbox to the PC you have to allow ICS first. So go to this page on the blog and follow the steps:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/ics-internet-connection-xbox-live.html
or you can connect your Xbox wirelessly to the wireless router using Xbox wireless network adapter.

Could you follow the steps on this page under: ICS?

Anonymous said...

Hi everyone,

So as I'm posting this you've probably already guessed it, I'm having trouble passing the DNS test using the ICS connection method. A quick rundown of how I am connecting to everything... netgear wireless card (pci) on my desktop connects to netgear router downstairs and then my Xbox360 connects into my onboard nforce4 ultra LAN. Just to check if my Xbox360 was producing the error, I directly connected it to my router and left all of the Xbox Dashboard settings on auto. This all work correctly, so it's not the Xbox360 causing the problem. Next, I wanted to check if it was just my computer that was causing the error while using ICS so I hooked everything up to my sister's laptop (she also connects to the network via wireless) and turned on ICS. Everything worked perfectly with this setup as well. Now when I try to do everything off of my computer using the auto settings I fail the IP test. I have to manually assign the IP, Subnet mask, and Gateway to successfully pass the IP test. I fail the DNS test regardless of whether it's on auto or I manually assign the primary/secondary servers. I've used both an ethernet cable and crossover cable and both tell me a connection was made. I don't know if this helps any, but once ICS is enabled I can successfully ping my onboard LAN card. Any ideas? Thanks.

PS- I know a fair share about networking so feel free to use all of the technical terminology if need be.

Happy New Year to all.... I am having the same problem as many users here in that my DNS is failing. I am trying to use my laptop's wireless connection with my 360 connected through a wired connection to my laptop. I have tried many suggestions but am wondering what I can do?

Hi there,

as you are using ICS it's supposed that all will work just on setting to automatic but you said it didn't and it worked when you set it manually ok, that's always our last step, anyway as it's now failing on the DNS part you should first go on the steps I set on this page, have you??

I think you have done all except for step 3 and 5 under the ICS part of my original post on this page so please try these 2 steps as well and feed me back.
Cheers.

I don't use any form of a firewall and I have already opened all the ports necessary, yet it still doesn't work. Like I said in my original post, I can connect perfectly fine when I plug into my sister's laptop and use ICS. I have configured it exactly the same on my desktop, but it just doesn't work. I have singled the problem out to be my onboard LAN I believe. I disabled the wireless adapter on my sister's laptop and plugged her ethernet directly into mine using both a standard ethernet cord and a crossover cable. My computer won't give her a valid IP address, which makes me think that maybe my nforce4 ultra LAN doesn't like ICS. Over the weekend I'm going to install another network card and re-configure everything. I'll get back to you with the results.

Hi,

I had a DNS problem but i worked that out, Thanks to your site and the hint about zonealarm somewhere. But now, I come to the xbox live test and it confirms it and says i need an update, I click ok to this update and then it automatically says it has failed to update. Help please?

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi Matt,

Happy New Year to you too.
Basically, when you connect your Xbox 360 to your PC or laptop to share it's connection you have to do some setup first on the laptop to allow the Xbox 360 to get connected through it, so I want you to go on the steps on these 2 pages respectively in order to do so:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/ics-internet-connection-xbox-live.html
Then:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/10/ip-failes-xbox-360-live-test.html

if it's not working after that try turning off the firewall you're using on your laptop, that might be the issue then.
Please let me know any updates about your issue.
Cheers.

Hi John,

As it has already passed the DNS part and now failing on the "Xbox Live" or in downloading the updates you need to use our page on this issue:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/03/xbox-live-nat-failed-on-xbox-360-live.html

Also you might need to lower the firewall settings on your router if you are using one, please let me know if you tried this and it didn't work either.
Cheers.

I have the xbox wireless network adaptor for my xbox 360 but when i try to sign on it doesnt work.. when i test the connection it passes EVERY test but when i try to sign in it doesnt work and asks to test the connection.. every 2 or 3 connection tests it connects but still disconnects!

any solutions??

thanks

hey people ... i have some great news.... i finally got it working...i fiddled around a bit and noticed that the automatic network settings are the problem:

just manually enter these values

"d. Enter the following:
• IP Address : 192.168.0.2
• Subnet mask : 255.255.255.0
• Default Gateway : 192.168.0.1
• DNS server (Primary): 192.168.0.1
• DNS server (Secondary): 192.168.0.1"

now fiddle around with the I.P. address and it should work !!

Hi (What if?),

Thanks for the information you supplied, basically, in some cases it will work the way you said, that's why if you had a look on our page for IP failure you'll find a step telling to enter the same addresses you just said.

Thanks again for your help and hope all will be able to go live like you did.

Nothing works! I'm connecting directly to my modem with an Ethernet cable and have done everything from restarting to factory defaults to entering all the PPPoE details. When I don't enter the PPPoE details, I fail the DNS settings but when I enter the PPPoE details, I fail the IP address settings. I'm so confused and annoyed! Please help me!

I have done everything including putting the DNS and IP adresses manually. (On a side note, although i can connect using ICS, whenever i select obtain DNS and IP adress, it automatically kicks me out of the connection. HELP!

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi there,

First just to make it clear for you.
"If your PC requires you to click on a connection icon containing your username/password details for your ISP before you can surf the net, put those same details into the PPPoE section of your Xbox (this does not apply to UK users)"

Now let's do everything again.
1. Make sure first no other devices connected to the modem at the same time as some modems has an Ethernet port along with a USB port so, you might think you can use both at the same time & connect the PC through USB with the console through Ethernet & that's incorrect so, we need to disconnect the PC first.
2. Turn the modem off then turn it back on after couple of seconds (by turning the modem off I mean to unplug it from the wall outlet even if you have a power button for it), then go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then "Restore to Factory Defaults" and when it ask you to Apply Settings select "Test Xbox Live".
3. If it's still not working we need to get the Physical Address of your PC to put it on the dashboard of your Xbox 360 console as some cable companies are preventing any unknown MAC Addresses from connecting, to get the Physical Address of you PC connect the PC only to the modem then follow these steps here, the physical address will look like this 00-E0-98-C1-88-C2.

4. Go on the dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then “Edit Settings” then “Additional Settings” tab then select “Advanced settings” & put the Physical Address of your PC without the dashes on the “Alternate MAC Address” part and select "Done", when it asks you to Apply Settings choose “Test Xbox Live”.

Cheers now,

Hi Sprint aircard user,

Check the above steps on this page under ICS.
Also take the following into consideration:
1- You might have entered your username/password info into the PPPoE in your XBox Dashboard, you do not need to do this.
2- If you are using a "GlobeSpan USB ADSL LAN Modem" network card, these do not work properly with ICS
3- If ICS has been working in the past and now fails, untick the "Allow others to connect...." box, click Ok. Reboot and then follow the ICS instructions again.

My 360 used to work fine on Live but just recently it wont connect anymore, my wireless adaptor just sits red, and I get an error code of x: 8000-0015 or X:8000-0011 before. I even went and bought a new adaptor but its still not connecting. ALways says network adaptor disconnected. Ever seen this before?

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi Miles,

Basically it seems to be an issue with the Xbox USB port you're connecting the wireless network adapter to. So try to put it in another port.

Or if you are using a D-Link DI-624 Rev C, try using an Xbox Live Certified version of firmware (2.70 or 2.53)

And as a last option try your wireless network adapter on a friend Xbox 360. If it works with him it'll be the Xbox 360 that needs service. And by then contact Xbox Support to repair or replace it for you.

I am connecting my modem directly to my 360 and I get a failed DNS error thing. How do I fix this?

Anonymous said...

Hi, I'm Simon and I am trying to get my Xbox Live connected, using ICS.
Well I'll start from the beginning, I've got a few connections, but I'm not quite sure which one to use! When I unplug the ethernet cable it says, that Local Area Connection is unplugged, so I put it back in and put in all the info for ennabling ICS, but it fails at the IP Address, but when I try with Local Area Connection 2, it finds the IP Addreess, it says it is connected, but it fails at DNS.
I'm not sure which to use, but I am thinking Local Area Connection, because of what happens when i unplug the Ethernet, but I've followed what you have said in the guide, but to no avail!.

Some other info:
I Am on AOL in Britain.
One end of the Ethernet is in the back of the computer, the other is in the back of The Xbox 360.

I Hope you can help me with this as I bought my Xbox 360 almost entirely for the fact of Xbox Live! Thanks alot,
Simon

Hi Linksys BEFW11S4 user,

Try the above steps on this page under:
Wired or Wireless connection to router

And also check the below reasons for the DNS failure. It might help you:
1- If you are using manual settings on the Xbox dashboard, you might have not put the correct details in the DNS settings, they should be the same as the "Default Gateway", which is the address of your router.
2- You have not put your IP address settings on "Automatic"
3- You have not forwarded the Xbox Live Ports (UDP88, UDP3074& TCP3074) through your Firewall to the Xbox.
4- You might have upgraded from a USB Modem to a router but not configured the router. So you'll need to update the router's firmware.
5- You might have entered your username/password info into the PPPoE in your XBox Dashboard, you do not need to do this if you are using an ADSL router/gateway
6- Try powering off the router and the Xbox, wait for 30 seconds. Power up the router, then the Xbox and try again.
7- You might have not configured your router with your ISP username/password details, and still use an icon to connect from your PC (using the router as a modem only). So you need to contact your ISP for this configuration.

Hope this will help.

xbox 360 help blog said...

Basically it seems to be Internet Connection Issue as for your Xbox 360 to get internet from the (PC) laptop you should allow ICS correctly and here's how to do it:
* "First go on your Xbox 360dashboard to System - Network Settings - Restore to factory defaults"

1) Ensure you are connected to the Internet
2) Ensure your Xbox is powered up and connected to your chosen network card
3) On your (PC) laptop go to Start/Network
4) Click on the Network and Sharing Center Button
5) Click Manage Network Connections
Here you must identify which of the connections listed is your connection to the internet.
6) Identify your LAN Connection to the Xbox
If you have more than one network card, it will be the one that doesn't say "Network Cable Unplugged", as your Xbox should be powered up and the cable connected, unplugged means there is nothing connected to that network card.

Ignore the 1394 connection and if your set-up is simple there should only be one left. The network card normally has a manufacturer's description to help you. Again this is very important that you identify the correct card.
It should be labeled as Local Area Connection followed by a number

Ensure your chosen Local Area Connection is enabled if it is disabled, right click on the Local Area Connection and choose Enable.
7) Left click once on your Dial-up Network Connection to highlight it, the one you use to connect to the Internet NOT Local Area Connection
8) Right click the mouse, and select properties, followed by continue
9) Click on the Sharing tab at the top
10) Tick the "Allow other network users to connect through this computers Internet connection"

Please Note:
If the option to "Allow other network users to connect through this computers Internet connection" does not exist, this will be as a result of one of the following:-

- You don't have a network card installed in your PC (laptop)
You are sharing the wrong connection; it needs to be the connection that connects to the internet, not a local area connection
- You have a network card but it is disabled
- You have a network but it is not functioning correctly

11) On the "Home Networking Connection" drop down box select the Network card that is connected to your Xbox from the list.

Remember it will be listed as Local Area Connection followed by a number if you have a few network cards.

You won't need to choose at all if you only have one network card

Remember this option will only appear if you have more than one Local Area Connection. So do not worry if this setting is not present.

12) Tick Establish a dial-up connection whenever a computer on my network attempts to access the Internet
13) Click on OK and wait (you may get a warning stating that as your connection is active use settings may not be applied right now, ignore it)
14) Disconnect from the Internet
15) Connect to the Internet again
16) Now left click the mouse on the network connection that links to your Xbox. Highlight it and right click and select Status/Details. Look for the field that says IPv4 IP Address, it should read 192.168.0.1 If it doesn't, you have done something wrong, start the guide again.
17) Scroll down the list to the bottom and double click on Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) to bring up its properties
18) On your Xbox Dashboard, go into Settings/Network Settings, ensure the settings are set to Auto
19) When the details have been entered. Press Back on the controller. Now select Connect and you should be able to connect to Xbox Live

Note: You might have entered your username/password info into the PPPoE in your XBox Dashboard, you do not need to do this

I hope this was helpful.

Hi Jonathan,

A- For the Xbox connection to the router check the below reasons for the DNS failure.

7- You might have not configured your router with your ISP username/password details, and still use an icon to connect from your PC (using the router as a modem only). So you need to contact your ISP for this configuration.

B- When using your PC with the "modem direct", if you have to click on an icon to connect to the internet that has your ISP username/password details stored inside, you will need to enter those same details into the PPPoE section of the Xbox.

1- I have tried both automatic and manual for DNS settings and I have made sure it is the same as my gateway

2- IP is automatic, because I have a dynamic IP address so it can't be on manual anyways

3- By forwarding the ports, do you mean accessing firewall on the Control Panel? Because I already did that

4- My router didn't change, my modem did

5- Didn't enter PPPoE

6- Tried power cycling many times already

7- Do you mean that my ISP is supposed to do something to configure my router to be able to support my Xbox?

xbox 360 help blog said...

Hi Jonathan,

Regarding forwarding the ports. Yes I mean accessing firewall on the Control Panel. Fine, you did it.
And you'll need to contact your ISP to do something to configure your router to be able to go on Xbox Live.

Hi there,

Check the below reasons for the DNS failure. It might help you:
1- You said you are using manual settings on the Xbox dashboard, you might have not put the correct details in the DNS settings, they should be the same as the "Default Gateway"
2- You might have not put your IP address settings on "Automatic"
Make sure on the Xbox 360 Dashboard it's set to Automatic.
3- You might have not succeded in forwarding the Xbox Live Ports (UDP88, UDP3074& TCP3074) through your router Firewall to the Xbox 360.
So contact your router's support and ask them to open these ports for you.
4- You might have upgraded from a USB Modem to a router but not configured the router. So you'll need to update the router's firmware.
5- You might have entered your username/password info into the PPPoE in your XBox Dashboard, you should not do this if you are using an ADSL router/gateway
6- Try turn off the router and the Xbox360, wait for 30 seconds. Then turn on the router, then the Xbox and try again.
7- You might have not configured your router with your ISP username/password details, and still use an icon to connect from your PC (using the router as a modem only). So you need to contact your ISP for this configuration.

2- You might have not set your IP address settings on "Automatic"
So set them to Automatic.
3- You said the portd are open.
Are these ports open on the router: UDP88, UDP3074& TCP3074?
4- You might have upgraded from a USB Modem to a router but did not configure it.
So you'll need to update the router's firmware.
5- You might have entered your username/password into the PPPoE Settings in your Xbox 360 Dashboard.
You should not do this if you are using an ADSL router/gateway
6- Try turn off the router and the Xbox 360, wait for 30 seconds. Then turn on the router and the Xbox 360 and try again.
7- You might have not configured your router with your Internet Service Provider username and password details, and still use an icon to connect from your PC.
So you need to contact your ISP for this configuration.

Regarding the update for your COD4 I believe it's a temporary issue.
If you try later and it's still the same, try download the update from xbox.com on a CD and then up;oad it on your Xbox 360.
- Put the CD in the Xbox 360.
- Turn on the Xbox 360 console.
- The update program will start automatically.
- Select "Yes, update now" and press the A button.
- Wait for the update to complete.
- The console will restart.
The update is completed now.

Cheers now,

Hi tanner,

So you have Microsoft's wireless network adapter.
If you try the above steps on this DNS page under:
b. Wired or Wireless connection to router

Also make sure when you enter the WPA-Key that it is Case Sensitiv
Wireless Secuity.

And something else. Some routers use "Wireless Access List" or "MAC filtering list" as a kind of higher security than the WEP & WPA key.
This is a list of "allowed" devices using the MAC Address to identify the device. If the access list is switched on, you'll have to enter the MAC Address details of the Xbox or even turn off this "Wireless Access list" option.

Cheers now,

Hi,

I'm stumped:

Mine fails on the test "Xbox Live" and doesn't seem to return any errors, I'm assuming these go in the box as they are like standard messages if you choose the yellow Y button.

I have opened the ports on the router as suggested, powered down, All my LAN settings are correct. I am assuming the ICMP test is to the Xbox Live servers which therefore proves connectivity but the Xbox Live test just fails instantly. A NAT test is then not done.

Am I right in assuming the ICMP test is to the XB Live servers? (Seems a little odd having the NAT test after unless it only tests to the gateway address on the ICMP test).

To me it looks like the Live servers are just not responding or dropping me.

This is probably going to sound alot like a few of the other posts here, but here it goes.

Im trying to connect to xbox live. I can get the IP to pass, but I havent made it past the DNS test, it always fails. I'm running a usb modem from my computer, and enet from modem to xbox. Also, my enet port on my pc is junk, so that might be a problem. I do have a router and a wireless adapter for my xbox but im not 100% on how to set it all up. Is one way better than the other (wired/wireless)? And of course, any help on my DNS failing would be awesome.

Hi Alex,

First did you check the above steps on this DNS page under:
a. Direct connection to modem

Second if the wired connection doesn't work for you, You can try the wireless method.
It's so simple. You just plug in the wireless network adapter in the USB port on the back of your Xbox 360.
Make sure that there is no obstacles between the wireless router and the Xbox 360.
Then test Xbox Live connection. It should work.

But if you get IP failure with the wireless connection, try the steps on the IP page on the blog under:
c. Wireless connection to router
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/04/ip-failed-xbox-360-live-test.html

And if you faced any other issues, don't hesitate to leave another comment.

Hi please can you help me :)

Today I have gone live on broadband - but like many people I get the the DNS failure.

I know you have many queries like this but I have read all the comments and I'm not really sure if my problem is the same :o)

I have an XBOX 360 connected straight to my TalkTalk modem. I switch on, test xbox live and get the results as wired, confirmed (IP), DNS failed.

What is a DNS number? and how do I get one? I don't even know my username and password setup up my talktalk for my broadband.

I have surfed the net and found DNS numbers to try:

I.e primary 62.24.199.13
secondary 62.24.199.23

or P - 62.24.128.17
S - 62.24.128.18

I do not have a PC at the moment it's not working
:(

Any help to get me out of this dilemma will be greatly appreciated :o)

Regards

Elaine :o)

Hi there,

1- First go on the Dashboard of your Xbox 360 console to “System” area then “Network Settings” then “Restore To Factory Defaults".

2- Then go on your PC and disable ICS.
3- Then enable it again using the steps on the Vista ICS page on the blog:
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2008/03/xbox-live-ics-windows-vista.html
4- If it's still not working, turn any firewall on your PC off.
5- If it's still not working, you have to contact your ISP or router manufacturer to open or forward the 3 Xbox live ports which are:
UDP 88
UDP 3074
TCP 3074

Hi there saw everyone else listing issues thought I would list one of my own.

first I'v been playing xbox live for a while now. I have my xbox ethernet cable hooked into a Ethernet hub that connects to my modem and my computer.

I didnt have any problems till recently where my xbox live would work but my internet wouldent on the computer, than after fixing it so my computer could go on the internet my xbox live stops working due to a DNS failure.

What I'm not getting is if its not suppose to work then why would it stop now? And secondly what can I do to fix this?

Thanks for your time.

Hi Darren,

Since it's a simple direct connection to the modem try turn off the modem and the Xbox 360. Then wait for 30 seconds.
Now turn on the modem then the Xbox 360 and try again

Let me ask you a question. When your PC is connected to the modem directly, do you have to click on an icon to connect to the internet?
If yes you will need to enter those same details (ISP username/password) into the PPPoE section of the Xbox 360.
System -- Network settings -- Edit settings -- Advanced -- PPPOE settings.

Cheers now,

Hello,
I have set my IP, Mask, Gateway, Primary and Secondary DNS servers on my Xbox360 manually. When I run the test it says it passes. When I try to play Halo 3 it says Information could not be retrieved from Xbox live. I have tried to release and renew my IP with no luck. I can maybe play a few games of matchmaking but it will throw me out of a match or disconnect me. When I check the test again it says the connection is good. PLease help. -Kyra-

I have been using Xbox 360 for a couple of years and Xbox live has been working great using the lan connection to the router. I bought a xbox 360 wireless N adapter yesterday, I can connect to the router but not the internet. I get an dns error message, adapter and router are set to automatic, I'm getting a primary DNS but the secondary DNS shows 0 0 0 0. Any suggestions?
